  • Functionality and Information

This app seems to almost be there. There are still a few things that I’d want to actually use this app:

    1. Show the Google user rating on these shows. I trust other users far more than I trust critics scores. Since this is not shown, I default to google search and forget about the Google TV app.

    2. Further link with the 3rd party apps. For example, the Apple TV app is able to connect to 3rd party apps and compile my shows in one area. I’m able to see what shows I’m watching regardless of the app. This would be a perfect function to add to the google TV app.

    3. Could you add a section where you could see your liked shows? Furthermore if you could add a “Favorites” section so I could look back at my favorite shows I viewed in the past.

    4. Many times the “Top Picks For You” shows me a single episode of a show with no title. Not too sure what that is about or if it is a bug.

  • In app purchases

For some reason this app won’t let me make in app purchases or purchases through the online website anymore, no I have no way of buying any movies unless it’s anything from the apps that I’ve already got such as Disney + or Netflix any other movies that aren’t streamed on those apps I can’t have access too.

  • Review Edit

Edit: this app finally no longer freezes when scrolling through library. Thank you for finally fixing so I can go back to watching items from my library. Please leave as-is.

Previous Review: This app is now garbage. I have many movies/shows from over the years, and appreciated the simplicity of the Google Play app. This new iteration is ridiculously glitchy. I can’t even scroll through my movie library without the screen freezing. Why break something good? Unless fixed, will likely abandon platform for good and buy movies again in iTunes instead.

  • ABSOLUTE GARBAGE APP.

They basically steal thousands of dollars of your purchased movies and attempt to get you to purchase them again on this incredibly “buggy” app. that’s impossible to navigate and crashes constantly. Go anywhere else to any other app. but here to this one. How do I restore the hundreds of movies I purchased from you? Such total garbage! How do I get my money back if you’re not able to restore them? Basically stealing from your customers and hoping that we don’t notice.

  • Buggy since name change

Prior to the name change, when it was Google Play, there were no issues. And if there were any issues, they weren’t big enough to complain about. One feature I wish was available was app control with my Apple Watch, play/pause and whatnot.

Now that the app name has changed to Google TV, I can’t exactly use the app. Yes it’ll open and load, but if I try to browse, it will freeze. When I choose “My Stuff” and try to scroll through my collection, the app freezes. I can’t scroll up or down, or return to the main screen. I have to close the app and that doesn’t even solve the problem. When I close and reopen, I still can’t browse trough my stuff.

  • I’m having issues….

I usually like using this app but now on a movie I’m trying to watch and want to rewatch certain points it freezes and every time I get in the app it says a message about crashes and at times I’m not able to play a movie or an episode because it says an error message and I’m forced to close the app and reopen it in order to fix the problem. It started just recently. Can you fix it? I was able to handle the annoying issue of not being able to watch certain episodes or seasons of a couple shows I like that I’ve bought in the app since I was still able to watch some of the stuff still available on the app. So in the mean time my rating is two stars…

  • Won’t Play Movies

I have an iPhone and a chrome cast and I’ve never had issues using Google Play Movies before to play rented/purchased movies until they updated it to this.
Seems to be fine playing movies I have purchased months ago but anything that I have purchased recently is a nightmare to play! Just sits there on the loading screen and then times out cause it’s taken too long. 10/10 do not recommend

  • Why is functionality so poor?

I’m an iPhone user, is that why? I downloaded a movie on Google play. Streamed it to my chromecast. Have to obviously use my phone as the remote. Google TV (which I had to stream it from now that to my surprise google play is no longer an app to stream from) has a basic play/pause button, a super small slider but no fast forward or rewind in 10-30s intervals. Why? Too challenging for a Google programmer to build?

A semi decent remote control function would be nice but the “google remote” that’s supposed to be part of the app doesn’t work. It doesn’t recognize any of the content that is streaming to my chromecast. These are simple things. It appears google has given up on usability and functionality now that google play app is dead.

  • Why not Apple TV?

Wouldn’t the Google TV app be a perfect candidate for availability on the Apple TV? Like, wouldn’t I want to watch TV on my TV?

I can think of three reasons why:
    1) Pushing use of Chromecast, but this is aimed at people already in the Apple ecosystem (and I don’t want to cast/airplay, which is why I chose to connect what is essentially a computer to my TV in the form of the Apple TV)
    2) Users unable to purchase content from the play store on the Apple TV itself, so it would solely be used for consuming content
    3) Not as much user or usage data available to make the platform worth while

I was a big-time Google user (Pixel phone, Google assistants in every room, chrome book), but since switched to Apple ecosystem. Instead of waiting for Google to improve the media experience on my platforms of choice (Google TV was too little too late) with non-commital dabbling with things like iOS support but not TVOS support, it was easier to just walk away from my purchase and start over on iTunes. If Google committed to providing my 4K content on all my devices, Google’s video service would have been a slam dunk.

I wish I could have my library at the quality I purchased it on the device I want to watch it. Who else could do that besides Google? And they choose not to. Bummer.

  • Can’t Download Anything

2022 - Now GoogleTV. The downloads still don’t work. It keeps on giving me an error any time I try and download something.

They did respond with the typical troubleshooting page. None of those things worked years ago, and they still don’t work now. This is a fine app for streaming things, but if you want to download anything, go elsewhere.

UPDATE: App now crashes whenever I click on. Buy your movies and TV shows elsewhere. UPDATE: They obviously haven’t updated this app in ages. Since buying a new iPad Pro, my movies and TV episodes freeze often, and I still can’t download anything. UPDATE: Still can’t download anything. It’s been repeatedly crashing while watching anything I’ve purchased. And now the app itself crashes every time I open it. NOT HAPPY googleplay. Purchase movies and TV shows elsewhere. Original Review. I’ve been using googleplay for years, and, overall, have been fairly happy with it. I haven’t been able to download anything on the app for months now though, and that makes me very unhappy, as I travel frequently. I contacted them, was told that they were aware of the problem, were working on it, and there was nothing to be done on my end. It’s obvious it’s not something they are very keen to fix, and I find that incredibly frustrating.
