Scam ads in app

Yesterday when opening the app, I came across an ad pop-up telling me my iphone had been hacked and I needed to press the “ok” button to get instructions on how to remove the malware or else all my photos and browser history would be released. This would probably have led to downloading actual malware or provide remote access to a scammer. I can see many users would instinctively press on the ad, as it looked identical to the format of the iphone message banners on screen. I tried to report the ad via the app but doesn’t seem possible, and likewise via the Apple Store. So I am leaving this review in the hope it gets noticed and the app developers start pay attention to what ads are running on their platform.

Always room for improvement.

1) The ads popping up on the screen as soon as you open can be annoying.

2) It would be good if the dots corresponded with whether the shop is currently open or not. So if that particular petrol station was closed, it doesn’t show up as one of the options to go to in the area selected on the screen. Maybe it could be faded or greyed out if it’s closed, so that you know that if I’m wanting to fill up right now, I can’t go to that station, but I still can see the price at that station, so I know whether it’s worth filling up right now or waiting until it opens again tomorrow for example. Show trading hours as well as the address and phone number when you tap on them, please. Start with trialling it with Port Pirie’s stations, since I gave the idea. Include the three petrol stations out on the highway too.

TERRIBLE NEW BUG (part 4)

The pop up message “Some retailers are hidden in Settings”, should show longer than just 0.5 of second. Perhaps 5 secs. would be better.

For quite some time now, if I select 95, it shows 98… The latest update made it worse, as I choose 98 and it actually shows 95! I tried in 3 different phones and iOS , no luck 😞 (all with latest version of app).

Previously: Even if I select 95, it still shows 98 on the map locations. All it changes is the price. If I change back to 98, it still shows 98 but updates the prices. UPDATE: Latest update still has another bug: When you click on any petrol station⛽️ logo, (in order to get the address), it pops up a window with the info, but less than 1 second later it disappears, so impossible to read the address info! After this, the map re-centres itself and you loose the initial location!! ————-——— // ————-———- So if I select i.e. U98, everytime I touch the screen it reverts straight away to Unleaded91!!! So I cannot zoom-in, scroll the map, or touch the petrol ⛽️ price, to check details (i.e. address), as it keeps changing my preferred petrol type; U91/U91, back to the default: Unleaded 91... This is so annoying! Please fix this ASAP.

Response from developer

Which iPhone and iOS version are you using?

It saves me money

It would be better without the adds but otherwise pretty reliable.

I ride a motorbike so have to fill up every third day. I live at one end of the freeway and work at the other end. The difference in price between the two can be significant and it’s pretty hard to judge which it will be. Using the app I can take the guess work out and just ride to the cheapest station.

Great App, but would love to have the option to pay to remove ads

I use this app all the time to check fuel prices to fill up. Because I use it so often, I’d be happy to pay a reasonable fee to remove advertising in the app.

Dear Developer,
Could you please offer an option for in-app purchases to remove advertising in the app. The app’s user experience would be greatly improved if people had the option to remove all advertising for a small fee, (similar to what other app developers offer for free apps that are funded by advertising)

Awesome App

If you’re someone who will drive down a main strip to go past several servos to check which has the best price, this apps for you. Actually in this day and age of ridiculous petrol prices, this app is pretty much a winner for every driver!

I have always found the prices for the type of fuel I want to be up to date and accurate. The ads are a minor inconvenience for the info you’re getting. I want to thank the developers for calling it ‘Petrol Spy’ too and not something like ‘Gas Spy’. It bugs me when Aussies call petrol/fuel ‘gggaaassss’ like an American yokel! Cheers 😉

Petrol on Pension

Government taxes increasing on everything including petrol means many pensioners cannot afford to fill up their tank to the extent of running out of petrol at traffic lights, or half way out of their drive into the road. Petrol Spy really helps to save quite a lot of money as price gouging continues unabated.
It comes down to buy petrol or pay to see a doctor - BUT you need petrol to get to the doctor, and the doctor no longer bulk bills.
Using Petrol Spy has enabled me to have enough money left to pay the doctor’s bill.
This also keeps me out of The Alfred Hospital Emergency dept.

Excellent app

Provides a terrific service and you can save quite a bit of money at times.
For those complaining about the ads, they are barely noticeable. They pop-up when you open the ad and then you close them. They are not video ads and are not intrusive.
I’ve been using this app for a few years and am very happy with the information and service it provides.

Big Money Saver

I have been using PetrolSpy now for at least 3 years and it has saved me hundreds/ perhaps thousands of dollars over this time. I often may save 40 to 60c per litre for 91ULP! I don’t want to pay the greedy oil companies any more than I have to as they play their profiteering games. The prices here are often better than the radio station annnouncements as they pick up reductions more accurately and as they occur with ongoing updates. An invaluable service!

Worthwhile download

I don’t like installing new apps, you know the usual data harvesting concerns and lack of phone capacity, but this is the first app I downloaded and kept for more than 6 months. Sure there are irritating ads at times and there are state based petrol watch free apps with no ads, but if you travel and need to use only one app, this is it. If you really liked it, you can pay to remove the ads but I am cheapskate enough to tolerate ads for a Freemium
