876 keeps score for the bid-your-tricks card game — the one where you say how many tricks you will take, and get nothing at all unless you are exactly right. It does not play the game. It counts it, argues less than your friends, and remembers every hand. THE DEAL IT KNOWS Sixteen rounds: eight cards down to one, the one-card hand played twice at the turn, then back up to eight. It works out the deal for your table, and when there are too many players for eight cards each it repeats the longest hands rather than quietly shortening the game. Screw the dealer is built in. The dealer bids last and may not make the bids total the hand — so the app greys that number out and tells you which one it is. No more counting on fingers while four people wait. A SECOND SCREEN FOR THE TABLE Put an iPad in the middle of the table and everyone can see where they stand: big scores, who is still to bid, and whether the table is over- or under-bid this hand. On your own devices it just works — sign in to the same iCloud account and the scoreboard follows along. On someone else's, share the game with a link. And at the table itself it updates over the local network in well under a second, with no internet at all. RANKINGS THAT ACTUALLY COMPARE Rated on where you finish, not how many points you scored — a full table and a short-handed one are not playing for the same number of points, and pretending otherwise flatters whoever plays the longest games. New players start near the middle and move as they play, so one lucky night does not put someone on top of a leaderboard forever. Alongside it: how often you make your bid exactly, and how often you manage it in the dealer's seat, which is the hardest chair at the table. And a wall of shame, for anyone who finishes a game under 87. FOR WHEN IT GOES WRONG Somebody miscounted three hands ago. Roll the game back to that round and carry on — nothing is deleted, and the game is marked as corrected rather than quietly rewritten. Somebody joined halfway through. Somebody left. Two of you were both keeping score on separate phones. All of it is handled, and games where the roster changed are left out of the rankings, because those scores do not mean the same thing.
