  • Takes away the difficulty of season planning

The 3 phase training scheme ‘Base-Build-Specialise’ makes it incredibly easy to plan out a season of cycle training (or triathlon training) with different levels depending on experience/time constraints etc.

The training plans are also a great basis when thinking about other types of training (e.g run/weight training) due to the clear focus on progression. Easily added about 20% to my FTP in less than a year with the structured progression and looking forward to going higher this year!

  • Best bicycle training knowledge anywheres!

Been following this podcast for over two years and it remains the benchmark. Interesting, engaging and factual content on training, equipment and events. The breadth of what is covered dwarfs anything else that I’ve listened to; health, family, work, nutrition, sleep, weight training, running, psychology, aerodynamics - the lot.

In addition the podcast has excellent production values and the presenters are clear and articulate in communicating their content.

Even if you only have a passing interest in cycling faster and only have time to listen one training podcast, then this is the one you need.

  • TR makes you faster and stronger!

TR makes you faster, stronger and more confident on the bike. TR has helped me achieve incredible goals during the last 2 years. It’s not only a software company, these guys have a ton of knowledge and are happy to share it with everyone in their weekly Podcast, they helped me achieve a 4 watt/kg FTP with structured training. TR by far has the best training calendar tool that helps you plan years of training in advance and predict what you might be capable of.
Thank you TR team, what you do is truly amazing!

  • If you want to ride faster, this is your app

Get yourself a bike, power meter and/or trainer that has a known resistance curve so the app can calculate your power while riding and be prepared to ride consistently, week in, week out. The app will do the rest and you will get faster, a lot faster. There are a tonne of training plans that will build you up nice and gradually. You regularly do power tests, which are now no longer than 20 mins in length, so the app knows just where to set each session. Coach Chad will talk you through each workout with text in the screen so you know what to expect and can understand what and why your body is feeling the way it is at any point in time. You can string training plans together over a whole season in this inbuilt calendar then easily move workouts around to your preferred training days of the week. It’s not going to do the riding for you, but the app makes everything else so easy that’s all you need to focus on.

  • TR Review 1yr on.

66yr old UK based rider been road cycling 5 yrs, age related racing last 3 yrs. Committed to high volume base, build and specialty training plan 12m ago with best racing results ever this season. Felt strange to not be out on the road for weeks on end but good to be able to achieve effective training when weather not conducive.
Main attraction of TR compared to other apps has been the well structured training plans for various disciplines based on repeat FTP tests. Found high intensity VO2 workouts hard to handle towards end of plan last time, possibly due to over optimistic FTP. Must admit to being tempted by Sufferfest app with 4 dimensional FTP for this reason.
Recent introduction of calendar and automatic import of road workouts with corresponding TSS a good feature as is the online blog. Other training apps undoubtedly more ‘immersive’ although text instructions and drills from trainer Chad with a good music app help somewhat. Those 2hr workouts take some managing sometimes.

  • Long time user, avid underachiever

TrainerRoad has been my go to training platform for 5 or 6 years. I am very sporadic in my training and not a racer but use TR for kicking myself into shape. Earlier this year (2018) I was diagnosed with Celiac disease and colitis. I have successfully improved my diet and have become and avid runner and casual cyclist. Next year I will be competing in my 3rd 70.3 race and 1st full IM distance event and am planning to follow the TR plans through the multiple phases as close as possible. I truly believe this is a great way to achieve success on race day. I am expecting our second child in April, but am counting on being prepared for the May and September races thanks to the hard work and great product from the guys at TR! Thanks! - Jake H.

  • Simple, convenient and comprehensive

I’m really happy to recommend trainer road (and frequently do) and for me it remains the best bike training software with the flexibility to take your training as far as you want.
You can really achieve a lot by remaining consistent and following the programs or, as some of my mates do, cherry picking workouts to prep for races/events.

There’s loads of training programs to cover most disciplines - providing you’ve got a compatible trainer -
    -mtb, xc multiple distances
    -cx
    -road, rr,crits,TT, sportive/century events
    -Tri
This goes hand in hand with what volume best suits your time preferences which is all able to be modified to whatever extent.

I’ve been using the app for over a year and it’s been consistently good with regular improvements which demonstrates the solid programming work being done behind the scenes. The new calendar is great and gives you an easy way to track your TSS and therefore progress without overtraining.

Zwift is out there and I like it and use it too but for training without distractions/traffic I really think Trainer road is the best option.

The website is great too as is the support which I’ve used too and they were prompt and on the button despite being out of their time zone.

  • Great app...but

I have a lot of good things to say about this app and the program, overall. However, there is something (obvious) missing — when TR begins sharing its data with Apple Activity & Health apps I will update to 5 stars.

The Sensor pairing has improved tremendously since the early releases. The in ride experience has also improved. The entire TR experience is fairly transparent during a ride and that is a good thing as it allows me to focus on riding and not the app itself. I also love the custom workout creator. I have looked at EVERY cycling app on the market (and I develop iOS apps) and can say that these guys got it right. TR is worth every penny of the subscription price.

I do wish there was a better visual for staying in my power zone. I like the horizontal slider and that TR will notify me if I stray too far... but I want to see more than a ‘dot’ for this indication. I’d like to see the entire range (% lower and higher) around my goal power at all times. I’d also like to have some control over this range. Otherwise, I love the experience and it makes me want to train — which is always a good thing!

  • There aren’t enough stars to do this app justice

Awesome app but the value goes well beyond the app alone. The Trainer Road team are outstanding, support is second to none. I highly recommend their Podcast and Forum as well, even if you aren’t a TR subscriber. Lots of knowledge and a friendly community. If you want to become a faster cyclist, this app will help you get there.

  • No Apple Health Integration - Really Unfortunate

This review isn’t a criticism of the platform regarding training effectiveness. As others have said, it’s great for that. With that being said, the app lacks a critical feature for those users who use an Apple Watch for activity tracking and other types of workouts (running, weight training, etc). Most fitness apps on iOS these days (including Zwift I believe) integrate with the Apple Health/Activity app. It’s a nice, convenient way to track total activity in a single place if you’re an Apple Watch user. I hope the developers will add this functionality soon as I really like other aspects of the platform (their podcast is great too).
