Already in love

I just downloaded the app and I’m already tearing up. I went through an extensive DBT program and this app focuses on a lot of the same principles I am already familiar with. One of my biggest triggers is idle hands. I get so antsy and bored and then overwhelmed by the tightness in my chest and paralyzed by options. It causes me to spiral and make impulsive decisions with negative consequences. It’s so refreshing to have a list of activities that are ACTUALLY doable for a neurodivergent person. Just taking a look around in this app reminded me that there are so many more ways to practice self care. It’s not all working out, skin care, and meal prepping. Sometimes it’s best to just sit and notice. Just be where you are ♥️

Hello! It's so wonderful to read this lovely review of Calm Harm - thank you so much for sharing.

saved my life multiple times

i first downloaded this app when i was 15, i’m turning 21 soon. i cannot tell you how thankful i am for this app. it worked so well i stopped using it about two years ago. even though every working coping skill i’ve learned has been from this app, i nearly forgot about it until today. worst panic attack i’ve had in my life, and it pulled me out of it in 2 minutes. rather, my thankfulness did. i was always partial to the comfort and release exercises. I did one of each and calmed myself enough to write this review. it’s not appropriate for me to describe the trenches i’ve been through, but in all of my major episodes i’ve turned to this app. i still remember being happy to see the update to hide exercises we didn’t like, suggesting and being happy to see exercises not asking for mobility or supplies. I don’t have right cocktail of emotional intelligence and vocabulary to say how thankful i am. i used to recommend this app like handing out candy on halloween. hopefully i won’t have to, but i absolutely will again. thank you so much, calm harm. just thank you.

Hi there - thank you so much for your review, we're so glad the app has been of use to you.

So helpful

I downloaded this app when I was really struggling. I downloaded a lot of others too cause let’s be real I was pretty desperate and this one made the others look horrible. It’s free. It’s a tracker for how long your streak is. It has little cartoon characters. And it’s helpful for when you just need a little boost and when you REALLY need help. There’s 5 minute things and 15 minute things to do. I personally enjoy the five minute ones more because I have the attention span of an almond. I’m currently at 465 days. I never would’ve gotten to this or even six months without this app. I really do enjoy it :)

Highly Recommend, Though Be Aware You Understand the Type of Tool That It Is

Copied and pasted from an email I sent to the team/developers:

To whom it may concern,
I just wanted to thank you for this stellar tool. I have used it for years, I found it in high school (I forget how) and though I never self harm or feel the urge to self harm anymore, I still use it for when I am feeling heightened anxiety or just for a casual guided breathing exercise. My relationship with the app has changed, but never has it been poor. Done both very thoughtfully and simply. Thank you. Tools like this matter, and the groups/organizations/people that make them happen matter.

One thing I will note is that it is not for everyone, and to understand if the format of it is what you are looking for. It is a coaching app; primarily a list of categorized suggestions on activities to do or prompts to think about. Some I have heard before and some I haven’t. It is NOT per se, a screen interactive app- it it does not have in app-minigames to distract you, or a spot to type prompt responses. I find it useful to type my “responses” in my notes app or in the self-monitoring section of the app afterward. It has a countdown timer on the screen for the duration of you doing your activity, whatever that may entail, and then you pick the phone back up/reopen the app when the timer is up and reasses how you are feeling.

My first ever review on an app

This is my first review and the reason why I did this review is bc I thought the app wouldn’t even help 1 bit bc of the state I am currently in and this was suggested to my by my councillor and I would like to take back what I thought about this app because this app is genuinely fantastic I would 100% recommend it to anyone.

Hi there, thank you very much for taking the time to leave such a lovely review! It's so great to hear that you're finding the app helpful. Thank you.

please help!

it’s not working for me, I got onto the ride the wave thing but a text is on my screen and it’s not going away

Response from developer

Hi there, sorry to hear you're having trouble with the app! Have you increased the text size on your phone? If it's increased considerably, it may cause formatting issues like those you're experiencing. If you are happy to decrease the font size a little in your phone's settings, this will hopefully fix your issue. If this hasn't helped, please do email us at calmharm@stem4.org.uk with details of your device and the iOS version it's running, and our developers will look into this for you. Hope this helps.

Impressive

I’m impressed with the app. It’s free and amazingly well-done for something that’s free, no add, no subscription. Thank you!

Hi there, thank you very much for your lovely review! It's great to hear that you like the app.

good but

i dont normally write reviews for apps. i was told to download this app by a thrive practitioner at school, and ive used it a few times since then and ive found the activities fairly helpful and good at distracting me from the urge. however what i find annoying is that say an activity hasnt helped, you cant log it it just asks you to find another. i normally say the activity has helped even if it has, just so i can log the fact ive had to try multiple activities before the urge has gone away(if that makes sense). also, the fact you’re only allowed to write in the journal space AFTER the urge has gone is very frustrating because i think it would be more beneficial to be able to write in the journal throughout e.g if an activity hasnt worked and you still feel sad you can write in the journal which is why i always say the urge has gone even if it hasnt because thats the only way im able to. i dont know what to write in the journal after the urge has gone, but i have plenty of things i can write in it during the time im feeling upset. i also think you should be able to create an account, so if you are to make a change of device you can easily log in. please take into account the things i have said and change them about your app! i think it would be a lot better with the things ive mentioned. other than that its a brilliant app definitely give it a try if you somebody that self harms

Hi there, thank you very much for your feedback! It is much appreciated. Just to clarify, users are able to record that an activity did not help them in the activity feedback that is presented once any activity has been completed, which will then show in the Self Monitoring section; however, users do need to select ‘Urge has passed’ to be able to proceed to this stage (instead of ‘Urge has not passed’), so I understand how this can be counter-intuitive and frustrating, and I have logged this to be reviewed with our team. Regarding the journal, users can make entries without having completed an activity first, which can be done so via Self Monitoring > My Journal > Add journal entry. However, it sounds like you might be referring to journal entries done during an activity, which is a request that I have logged for future review with our team - thank you. Finally, in terms of user accounts, the decision not to include these was based on user research, with young people telling us they valued privacy. This does mean, however, that if the Calm Harm app is deleted or the device is changed, any app data is lost. We therefore recommend that screenshots of any data that is to be saved are taken. We value your feedback regarding user accounts, however, and I have logged this for review as well.

Amazing app! (and suggestions)

I just wanna say I love this app, it’s helping me break my bad habit. It reminds me of all the positives in a moment of negativity and it’s so genius that it forces you to refocus to something positive, and gets your mind off the bad stuff. It also rewards you with streaks with little badges! And it gives helpful resources for things the app cannot do. I do have a suggestion though. When activities start where you have to use your phone, for example texting a friend, the timer never works out of the app for me. I’ll go to my messages app while the timer is at 4:45 or so, and when I get back 5 minutes later it’s still at the time I left it. It would very helpful if it could work out of the app so I don’t have to use another device, though I understand this is out of your control. Either way, if you’re thinking of downloading this app please do! It’s helped me so much on my journey of recovery!
