Poor for Business

I’ve been patient but ProtonMail continues to be an unreliable service and app for business use. Here are the main problems: 1) text goes off the screen in email authoring mode. Text should never, ever, ever go off of the screen. This is app development 101- the user should be able to see what’s written to them and what they’re writing to the recipient. The current way the author can’t see what they’re writing makes for a very clunky, almost unusable experience, with a great risk of typos which could be disastrous in a business environment, for example an extra or missing “0” in a dollar amount or the decimal point in the wrong place.

2) the app decides on its own after some updates to reverse my swipe action settings. So now some unknowable number of emails I intended to keep or permanently delete have had the exact opposite happen to them. Unforgivable for an email service to have unintended data loss!

For these reasons I would not recommend using ProtonMail for business or critical email communications. For general personal email and spam catching it may be fine.

Response from developer

Hi! We're sorry to hear about your experience. These issues with the text going off-screen and the swipe actions reverting to default after an update have been brought to our developer's attention and they are looking into potential causes and solutions. We apologize for the inconvenience this might cause you, but rest assured that our team is working on implementing a fix in an upcoming update of the app.

Horrible billing practices

Instead of canceling the subscription at the end of the billing cycle like every other paid email company, proton downgrades immediately and then issues nonrefundable credits unless you cancel within the first 30 days. Adding insult to injury, according to their terms and conditions these credits expire after 24 months. Even if this is all listed in their terms and conditions, it is an unethical and non-standard billing practice.

EDIT: Proton responded by promising to share my feedback with their team like they have on every review similar to mine. This has been a complaint for years and yet they still haven’t changed their policy. Promises don’t mean much if you never plan to follow through on them.

I already contacted proton through social media channels and through their support and was denied a very small refund both times, so I’m expected to believe sharing my ticket number here will change anything? (I don’t have one regardless). You are not a “refund friendly” company if you deny a less than $20 refund to a long time customer when I contacted two separate agents two separate times.

We're sorry to hear about the way you feel. Rest assured, we've shared your feedback internally. Please note that we are a very refund-friendly company, please share your ticket number with us here so we can follow up on your case.

App update regret

Please bring back swipe from left in a email to go back to inbox. I don’t want to swipe between emails. Phones are too big to use one hand and reach the top of the screen to hit the back to inbox button.
Or at least make this a setting so the user can choose the functionality.

Response from developer

Hi! Thank you for the feedback. Swiping through emails was a very popular request from our community. Nevertheless, we'll share your feedback internally so our developers can consider adding the ability to toggle off/on this feature. If you have any additional suggestions, feel free to contact us at https://proton.me/support/contact to let us know.

Very happy with Proton Mail

Thanks to the Proton app ecosystem (see Proton Unlimited), I have finally broken free of the dreaded privacy-invading scourge that is the Google ecosystem.

Goodbye Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Drive. No longer will you devour my most precious of information. While others may continue to feed your unquenchable thirst to realise your destiny as the all-seeing eye of Sauron, I will surely not.

Instead, I have sailed to a land of privacy, freedom and security. The land of Proton.

In this land, I need not worry about zealots with mal intent flogging tainted wares. Instead, things are as they seem. An email service sends and stores your emails. A calendar keeps your appointments. A cloud drive keeps your files. You may do these things as if in the privacy of your own home.

What a concept. Proton Unlimited.

Browser clearly superior

I still find myself having to log in on a web browser to access certain features. Like all their ios apps, it feels bare bones. Then I get emails about all their updates and promotions.

Tldr; it works. Not consistent with the original product

Hi. Thank you for your review. Could you contact us at https://proton.me/support/contact and let us know which functionalities you would like to see implemented in the iOS app? We always value our community's input on what we can do to improve.

Performance issues

I like proton’s services and have been using them for a while now. UI+UX also deserve praise. However, the mail client in particular, has been demonstrating constant performance issues as of late. Notifications aren’t always prompt and when they are, it fails to load updated inbox content until the app is restarted. Sometimes, it fails to connect at all until restart, even when all other apps have been connecting just fine.

Hi! Thank you for the review! We're sorry to hear about the issue you've experienced. Could you try clearing the app cache, logging out, and then logging back into the app and let us know if that helps? Report this to us directly through the "Report a problem" feature in the app menu if the issue persists.

Awesome service and app

I have been a Proton user for a number of years ever since I first understood the need for a more secure email service than than what the various freebies were offering.
Proton’s free service is amazing, but I also wanted to support the organization and take advantage of some of their other services, so I have been a subscriber for awhile. I use the Proton email app (as well as the Proton Drive and Calendar apps) on my iPhone and iPad, and I have never had any issues on either device. The email app is nicely designed with a clean interface. The app (and web-based version) works really well, and I know that my data is more secure because of it (and I’m not being inundated with advertisements that seem to know way too much about me).
I highly recommend Proton all around and am grateful that such an organization exists given the myriad companies that want your personal information in exchange for a “free” service.
Keep up the great work!

The APP does NOT work

I am so disappointed having to write this review. I’ve given this mail service more than enough chances to address all there issues over the past 12 months+.

I first created an account over a year ago (which I deleted at the time due to the same reasons).
Both my wife and I have created separate emails this time, using the web browsers, with the intention to use the mobile app.

Unfortunately as many others have mentioned in the reviews here both of us have the same issue, when we try to log onto the mobile app on an iPhone it says that either the login or the passwords are incorrect for both of us! Which is not true since we are logging in just fine using the browsers.

The issue is clearly with the developers, they need to invest time and resources to identity why potential customers are having this issues since it’s not just us but many people, since there so many of us saying the same thing in the reviews here you can imagine how many more are out there that don’t bother to leave a review.

The purpose of this review is to inform the Proton team and hopefully see them fix it.
We want to purchase the paying version of the mail but at this stage we can’t. I hope to hear back from someone with a reasonable solution.

PS: I’ve accessed all the minimal self help and FAQ sections on the Proton website but nothing works.

Hi. That doesn't sound right. Please make sure that you are entering the correct password by clicking on the "eye" icon at the end of the Password field. Passwords are case-sensitive, so make sure that the Caps Lock button isn't turned on when typing in the password. If you are using copy/paste to enter the password, make sure that there are no extra empty spaces copied with the password unless you are using them in the password. See our guide for troubleshooting the most common login issues here: https://proton.me/support/common-login-problems If you're still unable to log in, please contact us at https://proton.me/support/contact so we can help you accordingly. We'd appreciate it if you revisited your rating once the issue has been resolved.

Bad support and expensive

At $30 a month for visionary you expect at least mediocre level of support. I have said for years that bugs go unresolved and customer service handles bug reports like a McDonald’s drive through. I have made complaints here before and addressed them with customer service after they respond. The one thing proton is consistent with it hiring below average people. No matter how many times open a big report or email the company it’s always the same bad canned responses they could careless about customers. I would hate to know how bad free or lesser accounts are. Sad because the idea behind proton is great and with bright engineers could be innovative and exciting. Instead get more woke hires, more bugs, and less quality customer service. It really comes down ti quality of hires is reflected in quality of app and service. I would give negative rating if possible.

Typing a email longer than 2 sentences about locks up the device. It’s been a problem for years and On every knew device. Now I’m on iPhone 15 pro max. App’s performance is a monstrosity. Reach out to customer service and they spin it as a feature just need to enjoy the wait……………

Great app

Been trying to de-google and de-ms myself and I have mostly succeeded! (Now using proton for everything that I could remember), great alternative to google. The only thing holding me back from 5 star is the storage. I understand your not google sized and giving everyone 10GB would be expensive but it would be great. Thanks for existing proton!

Hi! Thank you for the honest and positive feedback - we've shared it with our team. We are in the process of rethinking our current storage for Free users. We should be increasing the default available storage for Free users at some point in the future, without being able to give an exact ETA.
