Worst accurate I ever seen in a app

DAY-1: I started my walking habit with Amble and went for an evening walk. Everything was good until I finished my track. During the walk, it showed 5.1 km, n steps and 1h 1m duration. But after finishing the track and getting home, it showed only 4.2 km. I was shocked!!

I asked Claude and ChatGPT about it and they basically said Amble should be accurate once you finish the track because it calculates based on your start and end points. So I thought okay, maybe that’s right.

DAY-2: Started another track and after finishing it showed 3.41 km. I thought okay, this must be accurate and went to sleep.

DAY-3: THIS IS WHERE I GOT FRUSTRATED 😭

Since Amble showed 3.4 km for the same track on Day-2, I thought I knew the distance. This time I walked faster and finished it in around 40 mins, expecting it to be somewhere close to 3.5 km.

And then Amble showed… 2.4 km. 😭

Same track as Day-2.

At this point I was like WHAT?So I actually checked the whole route manually using Google Maps and it comes to around 4.2 km.

Now I genuinely have no idea what Amble is using to calculate the distance and steps. Maybe there’s something I’m missing, but seeing the distance change this much for the same route is really disappointing.

Strava looks much more reliable for this, so I guess I’m switching.

PS: Thank you if you actually came this far and listened to my whole story ☺️

The UI and overall user experience of Amble is really good though.

Response from developer

Thank you for writing all of this down - it's exactly what we needed, and you were right on both counts. The distance dropped when you finished. Amble was using one calculation while you walked and a different one at the end. That's fixed: the number you see during the walk is now the number you finish with. The same route gave different distances. GPS has a hard time with laps in a small area, or places where the signal is weak, and Amble was trusting it anyway. It now checks the GPS against your steps, minute by minute. When the GPS can't be trusted, it uses your steps at your own stride, learned from your walks where the GPS was clear. The same walk should now give you the same distance. Steps still come straight from Apple Health, so they match the Fitness app. The fix is in the next update. We'd love for you to give it another try when it lands- and thank you for the kind words about the design.
