Decent app, meh price
Having said that. This is a 40 dollar habit tracker. Does it earn the price? Less confident.
The marketing is cute, but ultimately this is a database logging tool with extremely basic visualizations. Sync/export is solid. Do your own research, as the sales funnel does not have a viable free edition or low cost option.
I myself use it though.
Pricing 1/5, Features 3.5/5, UI polish 5/5, UX 4/5. Multi-device is great.
Better visualizations, better logging options, would bump up feature/UX rating more. Pricing is industry, despite indie dev framing.
Simple but powerful!
I really like Chronicling because of its simplicity — it’s not inflated with features and requires very minimal effort to add an entry once you’ve set up the categories you want to track. I really like that you can group your categories too. After setting those up, you just tap on the icon and it logs the time and date immediately (down to the second!) without any other work necessary. There is the option to add notes if you like but if you want anything further than that then you might be better off with a journaling app instead.
I’ll list my pros, cons, and suggestions below!
FYI, I paid for the full version! I only used the app for a day before I decided to buy because I knew it was everything I needed and I’d definitely need more than the free three categories. But I do think you can use the free version of this app without running into problems if you’re more of a light user!
PROS:
- One tap logging — tracks the date and time (can add additional notes if needed)
- Multiple entries allowed
- Categories can be color-coded and organized into groups
- Option to backdate or postdate entries
- Option to import/export data as a CSV
- Heatmap-style charts
- Modern UI and interactive widgets
- “Go to” date option, entries are searchable and can be filtered
- No AI! (If there are AI options, I haven’t gone looking for them and I can’t thank the app’s creator enough for not shoving it down our throat — thank you Rebecca!!!)
CONS:
- Limit to unique titles — duplicate titles are not allowed, even if they are in different groups. This was common in other apps I tried though!
- Does not backup to iCloud so you cannot use across devices. If you want to track on a separate device, the data set is not shared — you will have to create everything again. There are options for an Apple Watch but I don’t own one so I can’t comment. I mostly want to be able to move between my iPhone and iPad.
SUGGESTIONS:
- iCloud backup — I really want the ability to access my entries across devices!
- Collaborative tracking — it would be nice if others could be added to a category/group so they could add entries to the data set as well.
- Grid view — right now the categories and events show up as an interactive list on the main page. It would be really nice to have an interactive grid of icons with the event’s title, like a button grid.
- “Events view” details — currently, the events view shows a list of times and is denoted by the category’s icon. If you use the same icon for multiple categories, it’s difficult to know which entries you’re looking at without tapping into the entry completely. In the same way you can see notes in this view, I think it would be helpful to also see the category title!

Steals your money
Response from developer
Hi there - I’m sorry for the confusion and frustration this caused. The app itself doesn’t process payments directly - everything goes through Apple, so if you saw an immediate charge, it’s most likely another unrelated App Store purchase. The trial confirmation is shown on the purchase page, and you won’t be charged for Chronicling until the trial period has elapsed - unless you choose to cancel before then. If you believe you were wrongly charged, you can always request a refund through Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com. Best wishes, Rebecca

Cool app
I found and reported a bug to the developer, it was fixed and shipped on the same day 🚀. I downloaded the latest version and verified that the update fixes the issue.
Love it ❤️
An Essential App
Response from developer
Hi Steve, thank you so much for your kind words - it really means so much as an indie developer! I am currently working on custom reminders per category, so I hope Chronicling can also serve as a habit tracker soon. Best wishes, Rebecca
All in One! 10/10
Wonderful app!
Amazing, but we need a macOS version
Response from developer
Thanks for your kind words about Chronicling! I do plan to bring it to macOS someday, to round out the Apple platforms. I appreciate a native solution would be an improvement. Best wishes, Rebecca
