Too clever
So if I was just in a Spanish speaking country and wanting to find words it would be one thing. But I’m a language learner and sometimes DeepL is really annoying because it guesses too much what it thinks you are trying to say. Just as one example …if you type in the word “America “ for instance it tells you”estados unidos” and I’m sure lots of times that is what someone is looking for. But if you were really looking for the word “América” which is the actual word for America , you are not getting what you want. I could go on with a dozen such examples (not all of them so obvious in their translations ). Google Translate has started doing the same thing. I don’t like that. I want literal translations sometimes and these new Ai models give you some figurative or colloquial ones. No me gusta. Sometimes there are things which are not possible to translate literally and that’s different.

If you get into the habit of speaking your normal phrases into the translator, they eventually get into your head as a second nature.

Good, but has an issue on iPhone 13
I really like your translation app! It’s particularly handy when you can quickly take a photo and translate the text into the language you need. Unfortunately, since the latest updates I can’t see the entire translated text on my phone’s screen (iPhone 13) Please check your app on different types of phones.

Good translation without the Gemini slop
A good machine translation app for natural-sounding language, with some glaring flaws
I want to preface this by saying that DeepL is the gold standard as far as machine translation goes for quick, simple translations that sound like natural language. I’ve used this app for a few years and I stay using it for a reason.
However, a major pain point is that DeepL often hallucinates details which aren’t there, and which occasionally create drastically different meaning than the intent of the original text. For example, when translating passages from Japanese, DeepL’s translation will often invent pronouns which are not present in the original text and will stubbornly gender parties being spoken about, to the point of inventing descriptions in the alternative suggestions that are not even remotely applicable to the original text. For example, a sentence which makes no mention of a subject’s gender may be changed to definitively state that the subject is a “her”, and will even suggest alternatives like “little girl” when this is not implied or stated anywhere in the source text. Further, it does not give the option to change this in the alternative suggestions. I run into this problem routinely with Japanese text, even when the source text states outright that the subject being discussed is male.
Once you’ve learned the particular idiosyncrasies of this app and how to anticipate what elements will reliably be incorrect, it’s definitely useable and very useful, but personally I think it can be a little bit fraught if you simply take its output at face value.

AI slop: Stilted, awkward and unnatural
The Spanish-English/English-Spanish translations have been of really low quality for a couple of months now. Before, I used to celebrate within myself just how well DeepL translated subtleties of these two languages. Now, it can only muster up a literal definition that anyone with a book dictionary can produce; the "Alternatives" feature seems to be functionally deactivated. The brilliance of DeepL has been replaced by AI slop and DeepL hasn't returned it to its former glory.

No better than Google
This translation app was given very high reviews, but I just don't get it. My experience is using English to French and super slang English is translated into literal French which is very wrong. If you want to sound like complete buffoon then use the translations knowing no person anywhere in France would say the same thing.

Reading option not working
the reading function for EN only works once and you have to re-open the app every time you want it to read a new word.
Feels dead
They took too long to add essential features and now AI is here so who would pay for something Google can do for free and better.
Unusable due to bad playback
Randomly mispronounces spanish words. Separately, first syllable gets cut off if you use a bluetooth speaker. Lastly, audio quality is generally poor.
Me and my GF love this app, but fix the voice translate speed option
On Android the speed works fine but on iOS it’s not even usable. The ”normal” 1 voice speed is super slow. The .75 speed is extremely slow. The .5 speed is simply never used by anyone I’m sure. And the only option to faster that “normal” (too slow to even use hardly), is the 1.25 speed which is faster than an auctioneer. Please speed up the “normal” speed to a natural speed. Brownie points for changing to the robot voice too. Thank you!!

No longer the most accurate translator
Seems that they have focused to much on AI, that forgot that people chose them over the others because the app used to be reliable. Now it misses the context completely or just gives blank spaces at times. Such a shame because I used to recommend it over Google translator
Upside down text
I’m not sure if this is a bug, but when trying to translate text from my print manga in Japanese in the Camera view (live text translation), it always translates it upside down. Like, why? Translating Manga is the reason ok downloaded this app, but this is a bug I can’t get used to.
