Poor UX and utility

I’ve tried to love this app, I really have. But I’m deleting it after I post this. It does not recognize the words I want to look up. Ischemic is read as “Ikhemk” - that’s a challenging example but it IS a word in the Dictionary. The first problem is the app’s inability to read - and in turn define - words on a page. This is the point of the app!

Regardless of what word it looks up, I get a misread or wrong answer. Maybe I get a definition for “should” or “disappear”, but beyond elementary English, it does not work. I have all necessary dictionaries turned on so that’s not the issue.

The functionality of the app is also poor. There is no clear way to refresh and look up another word after a definition has been found! I have to close and re open the app to take another action. It’s a GREAT idea but the execution is flawed. Sorry!!!

Great app!

This app is just so wonderful and simple to use, and it turns out to be super useful when reading hard books; all you do is point the camera at it and it gives you the meaning

I like the concept

I really like the idea of this app. It’s free and it makes it easy to quickly lookup a definition while reading and not have to take time to type out a word. As others have mentioned there does seem to be a bug where it will only work one time and then stops working. If you close and reopen the app you’ll get another one time use. For those are having this issue, I have found that while you are hovering over a word if you swipe left to delete a word from your previous list it will do a lookup on the new word. Not sure why this works but it’s a little better than having to restart the app each time.

Doesn’t work

Very useful and light, but after one regnition, the aim is always green and dosn’t translate. Also it’s super inconvenient to close the dictionary at the top of the screen, should be swipe at the bottom, thank you.

has potential

this app has potential but it’s almost to buggy to use at all. not user friendly in any way, I found another app called CamDictionary that actually works. i’ll update my review if you get your stuff in order😂

Only Works Once

Like other reviews, once you look up a word, the crosshairs remain red and you have to close the app and reopen it to look up another word. Otherwise it worked great, for the first word look up.

App has major glitches

The app does not work as the video shows. The sounds does not work and does not refresh. You need to close off the whole app and reload all over again for the green to turn red again to try another word.

One word then useless

Have to delete app and reinstall each time you hope to use.

Does not work wish it did

Does not work after 1 st word

App no longer works correctly

This was a great app at first. I would have given it five stars. But all the sudden it stopped working correctly. It will detect the first word after you open the app, but that it won’t detect any more words until you exit the app and manually close it, then reopen it. Tried reinstalling it but that didn’t fix it.

Perfect concept, less-than perfect execution

This is such a useful app! I’ve assigned my action button on my iPhone 15 Pro to open it so I can quickly refer to it while reading a physical book. So far I have encountered a few problems with the app that I would love to see fixed:

- The word recognition is consistently inaccurate. Maybe it is just the font of the book I am reading, but “i” is frequently read as “l” and “cl” is frequently read as “d”. This would be less of a problem if there was a way to correct the word in the app, but with Apple’s current text recognition capabilities, I assume an update to this app’s recognition software could be implemented quite easily.

- I am only able to search for one word every time I open the app. In order to conduct a new search, you have to first close out the app and then reopen it.

- So far I haven’t been able to use the listening feature. Every time I click on the megaphone icon to listen to the pronunciation of a word, it has never worked for me.

I will continue to use the app because it is the best option on the App Store for what I am looking for, but I would love to see these few improvements made!

Note for new users

First, a quick note for new users. The first time I used the app to look up a word, it didn’t have a definition. I quickly realized you have to go to “Manage” at the bottom left of the definition screen, and then choose and download a dictionary. Then you can scan the word again and get a definition.

Second, I love this app, and so far, it’s the only app I’ve ever left a review on. I read a lot on electronic devices that just require a tap or two to get a word’s definition, and I find myself wanting to do the same thing with physical books. I hated having to pull out my phone and type the word into google to get a definition, because the time it takes can pull me out of the story and/or can lead to getting distracted. This app is the perfect solution. After opening the app initially, all I have to do while reading is unlock my phone and then point the camera and boom! I know what the word means, no typing or anything required.

Need more time!

I find this app very helpful to find the meaning of words not known to me. The only problem is that it doesn’t wait long enough for me to put the aiming point on the correct word and it’s usually missing the one I’m aiming for. Long story short: there needs to be more of a delay to allow the user to orient to the page, find the correct word to define, and then aim and capture with the camera.

Great App!

I love this app; I’m so glad I found it! The only thing I hope is changed is that opening the app causes whatever audio is playing to pause.
