App useless

Update Dec 24: App is now totally useless on iPad as no way to find places nearby and map is blank. It just about works on iPhone but is very clunky and slow and map is obscured by a red shading around your location. Might as well just use the website (though that is not one of the best either)

Apart from showing you potential places to visit, this app is virtually useless. In particular if you select a date to view opening times and prices etc. nothing happens. It is also very clunky, especially if when compared with say the excellent National Trust app.

works fine

the app gives a list or map of the closest sights to you, and all the info about them you would need. everything works fine.
However i feel like the app could be a lot more: having a digital membership card, we dont need physical cards which can get lost anymore. and the store on the app would help keep everything in one place.
app is fine though

Poor functionality and performance

There appears to be no way of finding places near my current location the map view of all sites list remains blank even with a good WiFi signal. Descriptions are brief with the app switching to internet browser at the slightest opportunity. Whilst this might be fine at home with WiFi it is next to useless when the site you are on has limited or no network connectivity (a large proportion of EH sites I would have thought). Very poor. At least it’s obvious none of our membership fees are being spent on the app!

A disappointment

It seems that this is now an abandoned app. Not sure why it's still in the App Store? Would love to use this to store favorites and plan a trip, and have that all saved offline, but it's basically impossible to use this app for anything.

If the owners of this app see this: feel free to reach out to me. I have a lot of experience managing a large non-profit organization's travel app, and have lots of thoughts about how to make this app into a useful tool for visitors.

I’m not sure what the complaints are about

I have an iPhone 13 and the app works flawlessly. I had pretty low expectations given the reviews but considering all I wanted was an app to tell me “what is near to where I am” without having to manually do that from the book it works for me.

Almost totally useless

I haven’t used this app in a while and looking for something to do I opened it and almost immediately remembered why I hadn’t used it. To search for anything near me it should be easier to use the map tabs, but as the maps never load I can’t. You can only list the sites in alphabetical order. There is absolutely no way to find out what events or properties are near to me using this app. It’s only useful if I know the name of the property I want to visit. I might as well use the member’s handbook.

Needs a total renewal

Not sure how old it is but I assume at least 5 years. Needs a massive refresh and redesign as well as fixing all the bugs.

EH has many ruins and the app is one of them

Illustrates the level of rubbish you can get away with. Last updated 2 YEARS AGO. Even English Heritage think it’s a waste of effort.
It sort of works on iPhone but to be honest, I’ll be putting the paper guide in the car as it is more reliable. It does not even respect the screen orientation on the iPad, which is so basic a requirement as to be laughable. Two stars for the iPhone use, a hard zero for iPad. Well, it just lost another star. When I look for places on the map, all I get is a blank grey screen and the list view doesn’t show the distance of them from me. It will give you a site location but there is no way to click on this and fire-up Apple Maps to get there. Also doesn’t allow you to copy and paste the address. What rubbish. Not showing opening times for sites. Really? Useless. Utterly useless.

Update to digital membership cards

Most organisations use digital membership forms as they are far easier to use than forgetting your card, the app is not the greatest as it can take a while to find what you want all in all please invest in your apps then you won’t need to produce books and guides meaning our membership can be invested better than in paper and postage that just gets left in a draw and not really looked at

Very poor app

This app is so frustrating, it should be easy to use even just for the basics but it fails on all levels. There is no personalisation ability for members, even if you could just add your membership card to your wallet so you don’t have to carry it that would be an improvement. I’m guessing all money goes to the properties and their is none left for app development. It’s a shame, they are missing out on an emerging generation they need to buy into membership. Prime example is the membership handbook contains more information than the app. Who wants to carry that with them? Very outdated approach I’m afraid.

Out-dated and uninformative

As well as being an English Heritage member, I am also a National Trust member. When I downloaded this app, I expected to have a similar experience to what I have with the National Trust, with an up-to-date, fluid, informative central hub for all of the places I could visit.

This app is not what it has the potential to be. I rarely find myself using it, or even the English Heritage website, to obtain information on where to go and what to do. I am not suggesting a carbon copy of the National Trust app, but a more user-friendly and informative experience would be welcome.

Very useful

As an English Heritage member, I found myself looking at the leaflet with a map marked with all the different places to visit. But all I can see is the location marked by the EH symbol but i find that I need to know what the place looks like, the history, events etc. this is when the app really helps. Aside from some minor bugs, this app is useful and well thought out. If you are an EH member I would recommend.

It’s not as bad as other reviewers make out

So I downloaded this app today and I just don’t understand what all the negative reviews are about. It works well to tell me what locations are near me or in an area I’d like to visit and what facilities or booking I need to arrange before I visit. It works perfectly well, perhaps a little slow at times, but easier than carrying the handbook around.

Barely useful

If all you want to do is find out what properties are near you, then ok. After that the app is randomly sketchy. Sometimes you get the info you need, other times not, seems to depend on property and timing.
Problems I’ve found so far
- can’t get to opening times or prices
- screen doesn’t refresh
- buttons don’t function
- out of date info
- broken links
- 404 error links
- conflicting or miss leading info
- no app support reporting function
- update over a year old, no response to reviews all detailing similar problems

If you can’t even find out when a castle is open or how much it costs to get in then you aren’t going to visit. Which is poor service for members and a loss of potential revenue for EH from prospective visitors.

Info for the developers 5th Feb
Kirby Muxlow - refresh fails/opening times missing
Ashby De La Zouche - broken booking link/ no price info without forcing a screen refresh by leaving/returning to the app, conflicting in regarding booking

Super glitchy

The App needs to be updated. It’s a shame. I would like to have a digital card to display on my app for site discounts but, at least for me, it doesn’t work at all. The web site is also currently glitchy. I do, however, get pushed the news letter to my email. That seems to work.

Nice looking but…

The app looks nice and seems to work quickly BUT in the prices / opening times section of the first two properties I looked at near me ( St Briavels and Goodrich Castle) there were NO Opening times available ( it says available nearer the time , er is an hour before visit near enough ??! ) and they appeared to be “Free” to all types of visitors !! Don’t tell me I’ve just bought membership for nothing ?!

Sort this app out

I downloaded the app as it’s easier carrying my phone around with me than the physical property listings… only it’s easier to use the paper copy to find the info I want. Get the app fixed please. The tabs don’t work properly, have to keep pressing back to finally get the info I need, the search function doesn’t work. It’s not useful at all. Also, the link on the App Store to get app support takes you to the home page and not to any help of any sort. Can be much more user friendly but obviously not so bothered as my comment is similar to many others. A member and thinking of using it - don’t bother

could be better

doesn’t deserve the current 2 stars it has, though. useful for finding English Heritage sites quickly that are near you. Wish the details about each site were more readily available.

Near me will not update

When you first use the app it works great. Click on near me and it will list all the properties within about a 30mile radius. However when you move location and try and do a near me search again it will continue to give you properties with within 30miles of the original location and there distance from that place. The only way I can see to get it to work in a different location is to delete the app and reinstall. Bit of a faff every time you are somewhere new.

Oh dear 🙁👎🏼…anyone listening??

With the cost of Membership (which my husband, myself and two friends have just paid for) you would think EH would have invested into and developed an app that is actually useful. It is very cluncky and slow. When searching for places to visit, I have to hit the back button several times to take me to the previous screen. Information/photos of the places to visit is extremely limited. It appears this is not just my view, most of the reviews are similar but obviously, EH developers are ignoring everyone and not bringing this app up to speed. It can’t be that difficult as there are so many helpful and aesthetically pleasing apps out there. A members log in would also be a nice addition too…anyone listening??
