I hope MFI support is on the roadmap

Just got the game. I know I PROBABLY will be addicted; bring MFI support, and change that to CERTAINLY (and another star)
Awesome stuff, updates to the review coming as I get more exposure to it.

Crashing

In an effort to find the final games I plan today, this game was very easily one of the games I would have kept because this game has endless gameplay content and it’s tough as nails. The endless grind for a top score would keep me going for years to come.

Unfortunately when you hit a certain point and the enemy count gets too high on the screen it simply crashes, no ability to return. I could even deal with occasional crashes if I could reload and return.

This makes the game unplayable. Don’t buy this unless they fix it. End of story. Great game. Stop updating content and just make it work please. Will gladly update if this is fixed (I check every couple months)

Very chill, nice music

2021 April: Update: well now it’s crashing randomly when there are lots of objects on screen or when I kill a lot of monsters in a row

——————
I’ve been enjoying it a lot, it’s kind of relaxing and ASMR in a way...but it crashes when my character gets killed lately, so instead of seeing how my character got killed it exits to the springboard.

Would be a four or five star if it wasn’t for the constant crashes.

Good game but it has a tendency to crash when you’re in the middle of things getting interesting.

Almost a 5 Star

I love the game concept. However, on my iPhone X the text at the edges of the screen is cropped.

Just discovered that the game does not save/restore correctly either.

Idea for a new stuff!

A maze land would be cool, it would have to work with certain geometry’s and certain algorithms. Maybe it could point to the direction of the center, and when you got there, you get a ton of rare loot! And cheese which can be used as bait.

Can’t fix display height!

I love this game and have been playing it for years on Android devices for free, but when I just bought it for my iPhone I was very disappointed to see that the entire UI on iPhone X is on the lower section of the screen and I do not see an option to move it to the center as it is seen on the screenshot!

Major bug not getting fixed

I used to rate this app as a 4-5 out of 5 stars. The game is an excellent concept and I am impressed overall about how the game has progressed through the years. The iOS version of this game, however, has a major bug that significantly hampers gameplay. Frequently when you loose the game crashes. This is problematic, because any achievements that you have earned (such as acquiring 20 treasures in a new land and unlocking a new pure tactics level) are lost. This seems to occur with multiple types of player death and seems somewhat random. It also seems unaffected by using orbs of safety. I have tried to clear the memory cache by using an orb of safety and killing my character (to save progress), but this seems to not work. I have to rate the app so low due to the broad impact of the bug. I hope to be able to increase my rating when they fix this bug, because otherwise it is one of my favorite games. I am hoping the low rating attracts the notice of the developers.

Also, as a side note to players, if you can choose between playing this on the iPad vs iPhone, choose the iPad. The larger screen makes the game easier to see and control.

Also, to the fellow reviewer complaining about music, there is a simple fix: turn off HyperRouge’s in-app noise, and you should be able to hear your music or other types of audio from other apps. This seems to be an issue across multiple apps, not just HyperRogue, which makes me think that is an iOS problem. On my iPad, I have actually been able to watch video and play the game at the same time.

Crashes a lot

The game is good, but it’s impossible to play as it because it constantly crashes, and restarts you back at the beginning when you reopen. This needs to be fixed, because otherwise there’s no reason to play

Strangely compelling!

Simple. Compelling. Emergent.

Can’t listen to music with HyperRogue; very dark map

Plays well, found some nits:
- if I play music then switch to or open HyperRogue, it always pauses my tunes
- on iPhone 6+, the move button is obscured by the direction indicator so one can’t tap it easily
- some of the tile sets are far too dim to see well with ambient daylight

Fun game, thanks :)

It's come a long way!

It plays great on my iPad Pro and iPhone 8+!

Response from developer

Thanks for the review! As in the desktop versions, the game should be saved if you exit the app after picking up an Orb of Safety (while it is still active). Orb of Safety should be easy to find in the Land of Eternal Motion and Crossroads (after you pick up 10 Phoenix Feathers in LoEM), and also in the Prairie. Unfortunately a save feature available at any time is very difficult to add because of the structure of the world.

Amazing

Absolutely fantastic game.

Get the PC version

Hyperrogue is definitely worth playing, however it controls very poorly on a small touchscreen. You can get the same exact game, but with vastly better controls, on Steam.

Delightful!

I wasn't expecting such a smooth and easy to play game when I decided to buy this, knowing it was based in truly bizarre geometry but the controls are present and the simple graphics work to its advantage. I would definitely recommend this!

Amazing game

This game is truly unique. It's the only game I've ever seen that deals with hyperbolic geometry. The memory usage is a problem, but it's hard to work around. Hgfuig's solution wouldn't work, however, and when you look at Orbs of Yendor it's obvious why; by the time you reached the key the orb would be deleted.

Response from developer

Thanks for the review! The memory problem is indeed not easy to solve, but the newest updates add the option "forget faraway cells" (ON by default) which should solve the issue in most cases in a somewhat intelligent way.

Fun& mathematically inspired

I tried the free PC version first. I love games that demonstrate mathematical concepts. My only complaints are that the game will infrequently abruptly restart because it uses too much memory, it's a fatal flaw that should be dealt with immediately. Right now the only way to clear the memory cache is to get an orb of safety or to die, instead the game should by default clear any data more than ~30 units away from you, since you're never going to find your way back anyways. The alternate game modes are fun as well, but the controls in elliptical space apparently don't work correctly, and the half plane model appears really zoomed in on my iPhone 4s no matter what scale factor I set. All but the first are really minor complaints, and I'm glad I got this game.

Thank you very much for the review! * Regarding the memory problem: I agree that this is a serious issue, unfortunately the solution is not as easy as you say, because there are situations in the game where places ~100 units away from you are still important, also some of the structures (horocycles, Tentacles, etc.) might extend far away. Still, the newest updates adds the option "forget faraway cells" (ON by default) which should solve the issue in most cases in a somewhat intelligent way. * I have tested the elliptic space and it works (more or less) correctly. I think this has been fixed since version 9.1b? * The problem with the half-plane model seems to be a misfeature of this model rather than of HyperRogue.

Just like the PC version

Great unique roguelike just on a smaller screen =] keep up the great work !
