Not Worth It

I use to love this app, had it for over 10 years and it showed me my progress during my sobriety using many useful metrics. This was before the app updated and now requires me to log in and provide more information than I am comfortable with providing given the subject. Too bad, I will not recommend this app and I am deleting it after I finish writing this review. Sad to take advantage of a vulnerable population so the developer can make more money even though the previous version was just fine.

Don’t buy

I began with this app 6 years ago because I loved the SIMPLICITY of it.
It was just a counter, just statistics, bare bones. No inspirational quotes or notifications.
And it was free.
I just decided to check in and the format is completely different, now with inspirational content, and it is no longer free. There are far better sobriety apps that are free. If I were searching for one, I wouldn’t choose this one.

Response from developer

Thank you for sharing your feedback and for using the app. I’d like to clarify a couple of points for anyone reading: the app has always had a one-time download price of $2.99 in the App Store, and that price has not changed. The core quit counter and statistics are still included with that purchase and remain fully usable without any additional payment. I recently added optional features such as donations and a Premium subscription to help support continued development, but nothing was removed or required to keep using the app as a simple counter. I understand that design changes and added features aren’t for everyone, and I respect that preference. Thank you again for taking the time to share your perspective. ~Paul

Over complicated the app

It used to be a simple app now they want you to make an account and password yada yada and invade your privacy. Added AI slop all over. Added an entire tab dedicated to begging for tips. You had a perfectly simple easy to use app and screwed it all away. Garbage app now don’t buy. Not worth the 1$

Response from developer

I’m sorry to hear the changes haven’t worked for you. I’d like to clarify a few points for anyone reading. Accounts were added to support optional features like secure backup and syncing across devices. Personal data is not sold or shared. AI features, notifications, and support options are entirely optional and not required to use the app. The core quit counter and statistics remain available with the original app purchase. Based on user feedback, the original simplified dashboard has also been brought back as an option for those who prefer the classic experience. I understand that some users prefer a strictly minimal app, and I respect that perspective. Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. ~Paul

Updated?

I liked the original app better.

Love this app

This app is so simple and so profound. I love the updates that show all the milestones and the AI encouragement - really great!

Response from developer

Thank you so much — I really appreciate this. I’m glad the milestone tracking and AI encouragement have been helpful to you. The goal has always been to keep the app simple at its core while offering optional tools for motivation and reflection. Thanks for taking the time to share your experience, and congratulations on your progress. ~Paul

Love This App!

Been using this app for 10
Years, love the simplicity. When I saw they had update it I was pretty upset, then I realized you can just toggle it back to the original app. More apps should do this when making big overhaul updates. Love it! Congrats on your time guys!

Response from developer

Thank you — this really means a lot, especially coming from someone who’s been using the app for so long. I’m glad you found the option to switch back to the original experience. That choice was added directly based on user feedback, and it’s great to hear it worked as intended. I appreciate the support and kind words, and congratulations on your journey. ~Paul

Best for Screenshot!

I’ve been using this app since October 2022 and I love that I can screenshot the classic view and share with my sober buddies!

Response from developer

Thank you — I’m really glad to hear that. Keeping the classic view available was important so people could continue sharing their progress in a simple, familiar way. I appreciate you taking the time to leave a review, and congrats on your continued progress. ~Paul

User Information Being Monetized

Not interested in having my data collected and monetized, recent update seems to be doing just that. Deleting the app.

Response from developer

Thanks for sharing your concern. To clarify, I’m Done Drinking does not collect or sell any personal data. The app only stores the information you enter (like your quit date, drink choices, and settings) so it can calculate your progress and, if you choose, securely sync across devices. This data is never shared with advertisers or third parties. I’m Done Drinking is now in its 16th year. Any optional purchases go toward supporting new features—like AI-generated motivational messages—and keeping the app up to date for the long term. Privacy and user trust remain my top priorities, and I’m always happy to answer questions directly. (paul@gothicsoftware.com) ~Paul

Doesn’t work

I have used this app for six and a half years. It was beautiful because it did the one thing it was supposed to do without anything extra. Looking at my stats was helpful. Now it wants me to make an account and that doesn’t even work. The app doesn’t work anymore and that’s disappointing.

Response from developer

Thank you for being such a long-time user — six and a half years is incredible! I understand your frustration with the new sign-in requirement. The reason for this change is that the app was rebuilt from the ground up to support secure syncing across devices, optional motivational messages, and future improvements. That said, you should absolutely be able to create an account and continue tracking your quit journey. If the account setup didn’t work for you, I’d really like to help — please reach out at paul@gothicsoftware.com so we can troubleshoot together. I know change can feel disruptive, but my goal is to keep the core focus exactly the same: a simple, accurate counter that helps you stay on track. Thank you again for sticking with the app, and I’ll do my best to make sure it continues to support you. ~Paul

Changed app

I liked this app because it was simple. Didn’t have to register my email, just paid my fee and entered my dates and was done. I loved the 3 sets of data and I checked it throughout the week. Now like every other facet of life, I’m inundated with AI presence and pressure to subscribe and spend more money. I have to scroll past things I don’t care about to get to my data now.

Response from developer

I really appreciate you sharing this. The original simplicity is what made the app special, and I didn’t mean to take that away. The rebuild added features and options, but the heart of it should still be your core stats. I’ll be making changes soon to bring that focus back. Thank you for sticking with it — and if you’d like, reach me directly at paul@gothicsoftware.com . I’m listening.

Please bring back the old version 😕

The old version was simple and straightforward — that’s exactly why it worked so well. The new version is dreadful: way overcomplicated, cluttered and too many options, just like every other quitting app! Please bring back the simplicity of the old version.

Annoying app

The options for drinks are very limited with only ‘beer’ 4% or ‘craft beer’ 8%. I’d like my money back! This is not remotely motivating 😕

Great app!!!

This app is amazing. I love looking at it and seeing how much money I saved. I also enjoy planning my next vacation with that money or self reward!

Response from developer

Thank you ~Paul

doesn‘t work

doesn‘t take quantity and price of drinks

Response from developer

Hi, Sistefram. Very sorry to hear, can you please provide more details? What quantity and price have you entered? ~Paul

4 years stopped now

Fantastic app.
Much appreciated.

Very motivating

I’ve stopped and started a few times and used this app. It really is highly motivating as the last 3 week break from drinking saved me $530, just shows how expensive it can be.I love how the counter is constantly ticking.

the app does not work!!!

Response from developer

Hi, Zuzara. Can you provide more details? Please email me directly at paul@gothicsoftware.com Warm regards, ~Paul

Please return money for this app.

All it does is count. Cancel order. Thanks.

Response from developer

Hi, it does more than count. The counter is the primary feature of the application. ~Paul
