A jazz trio is playing in a small room on your phone. Nobody recorded it: every note is written the moment it is played. Leave it on while you work, or fall asleep to it. Never the same night. Always the same room. EVERY NIGHT IS A DIFFERENT NIGHT The room keeps time by the clock. Open it tonight and the band plays tonight's sets; open it tomorrow and they are different ones. It is open whether or not you are there. SOME NIGHTS SOMETHING IS UP Most nights are ordinary. On the others, one line at the top of the screen tells you what: rain outside, a slow night, the owner is in, a new bass player who cannot quite keep up yet. The band plays accordingly. In the rain they play softer and leave more space; the new bass player finds his feet by the last set. NINE PEOPLE PLAY HERE Each of them has things they simply never do: one never picks up the brushes, one never plays a block chord, one never once shows off. Auguste sits in at most one tune a night, and not most nights. THIS ROOM HAS AN ACCENT, AND IT IS ONLY YOURS The chords it reaches for, how it ends a phrase, how often the brushes come out: fixed the first time you opened the app, and it never changes. Nobody else's room sounds quite like it. TWO KINDS OF ROOM One is intimate, with an upright piano and players who hold back. The other is showier, with a grand piano and players who like to prove something. Your room starts as the second kind. Regulars can choose which kind theirs is. VISIT A FRIEND'S ROOM Every room has a number. Type in a friend's and you are in their room for the evening, hearing exactly the sets they hear tonight, with no server and no account. Your own room stays untouched. THEY KEEP PLAYERS' HOURS A set runs about forty-five minutes, then they step away. The quiet between sets is real, and it is meant to be there. Call last call and they finish the tune they are on, slow down, and let the room go quiet. Nothing ever fades out. WRITTEN HERE, AS IT IS PLAYED No library of songs, no recordings of performances, no neural model, no training data. A rule-based music-theory engine improvising in real time, on this device. NOTHING TO CONNECT TO No network requests at all. No account. Nothing collected. It works on a plane, in a basement, forever. A ROOM, NOT A PLAYLIST No progress bar, no track list, no skip button. You cannot ask a piano player for the next song. The first seven nights are on the house: the whole room, nothing held back.
