Making a Difference!

I’ve been using this app for 90 days and it’s made a difference in my husband’s numbers! He has Stage 2 CKD. The selection of recipes, the ability to import recipes from other sites (such as DaVita) and to create my own recipes is great. The app is easy and straightforward. I’m so grateful to the developers for creating this tool.

Absolutely indispensable

This is my third time reviewing, so I feel like a lunatic, but if I had waited a week or so, instead of nit-picking about trivial things, this is the review I would give: this app has become an indispensable tool to stay 3A for as long as possible.

I tried reading books that used complicated calculations for everything you eat, and they all disagree on what you can and can't eat--which would basically be water and twigs, according to some of these authors--but this app does all the calculations for me, and I'm learning quickly that I can eat most foods (albeit, very little animal protein), depending on what else I have eaten that day. Almost as importantly, I'm discovering what limits I have--4 oz of chicken put me over my protein allowance, so apparently, I've been eating way too much protein. I've also been drinking *too much* water, which surprised me.

I'm donating the books I bought to a clinic because not only were the calculations insanely complicated--and I'm a math-phobe--the recipes are depressingly bad, as well as their lengthy list of "verboten" foods, when in fact, they aren't verboten, it's just all a matter of perhaps eating smaller amounts and balancing that with whatever else you eat on that day, which this app makes super easy to figure out.

I only wish my nephrologist had been as helpful as this app. As far as negatives? I still wish they used calories instead of kilojoules, but I've bookmarked a converter online, so it's a very small inconvenience. Yes, compared to some apps, this one might be a bit pricey looking at first, but it's well worth the money!

Response from developer

Thank you for coming back to write this — reviews like yours are exactly why we built KidneyPal, and "I wish my nephrologist had been as helpful" made our week. One thing we'd love to fix: KidneyPal should be showing calories, not kilojoules. If you're seeing kJ somewhere in the app, could you email a screenshot to support@kidneypal.app? We'll get it sorted. Wishing you a long, healthy run at stage 3A!

Not liking this

Manually enter food. No numbers for sodium etc filling in and tracking.

Horrible app

I have CKD and ingredients esp protein are very important part of my health. I scanned a container of high protein yogurt this am and the ingredients kidney pal listed were way off. It is important I do not exceed my protein limit but with inaccurate info I could easily non knowing double my limit

Doesn’t Add Up !!!

This app must be consistent and 90% correct but afraid to rely on it comparing foods with Yuka there are major screw ups. Scanner sucks!! Doesn’t list hidden ingredients, often contradictory! And mostly, can’t rely on this with CKD3B. I already paid but will dispute. That’s why there is no free trial. Research this app and those of you please use caution on replying on it . Use Yuka for free the scanner works on all bar codes unlike Kidney pal. I’m getting kidney Safe when it isn’t according to Yuka scanner. Just some thoughts, if kidney function gets worse from using this App they better lawyer up !
