LingQ

An excellent means of learning a second language

Response from developer

Thanks for the great review! We’re glad you’re enjoying learning languages with LingQ!

Use it everyday

Very helpful app. Find content that is Intresting to you, import it and start learning. When I find content that really am Into my skills grow quickly because I am motivated and excited to keep pushing, if you are learning a language and have some of the basics down, definitely a great app!

Excellent way to get comprehensive input

I was very skeptical about just listening and reading would work. I had to get past my crutch of needing to understand everything. I watched some of Steve‘s videos where he explained that to it is like cutting grass. The first pass you may understand a little, the next pass you pick up a little more, and the more passes the more and more you start to understand. I have followed his advice and noticed my understanding grew faster than it had with just doing flash cards. The app really gives you so many options for material. I have read books and articles, listened to music, imported music and videos etc. I start my mornings with LingQ

Fingerprint

You have to do a lengthy questionnaire just to start, which eventually gets you to a page where you have to provide your fingerprint to continue and it doesn't appear skippable. No thank you.

Rubbish app

Asking for a huge money when YouTube and Ai has free options to practice my speaking .

Great

Great application

Needs translation

The stories don’t do me any good if I don’t have the English translation below the French lines

One of the better apps

Took me a while to get into the swing of it, but now it’s my most-used learning app. Drawbacks are occasional translation errors and somewhat odd designation of “words”. But it does a lot and works with lots of sources. Once you find some appropriate material to study, you’re golden.

I use in conjunction with a chat AI (Claude in my case) to dig into deeper questions. The built-in AI is getting better, but I already have Claude trained up for what I want.

Amazing if you use it consistently

I had a 3 year streak on Duolingo and I progressed more with my target language in 35 days with this app (. Reading comprehension and vocabulary went thru the roof. Went from painstakingly reading a page in 20mins to reading 5-6 pages with much more ease in the same amount of time. Consistency is key.

That is fantastic progress in only 35 days! Consistent reading and listening really compound over time. Thank you for sharing your experience.

LingQ rules supreme

It’s a great app that lets you read and listen. Very relaxing and effective.

Essential

A daily addition to my language learning journey. I value its audio combined with the transcript to follow along. The follow up with vocabulary review of the words you have encountered is an added benefit.

This is how you learn a new language

You can start to learn a language with Duolingo, it’ll get you the basics. LingQ is for actually learning the language.

You don’t need to learn orthography to start, you might need some basic grammar, and to learn a language well you should definitely talk to some native speakers at some point. But the majority of the learning is just absorbing the language and this is the best way to do it. I can’t read paper novels in Spanish but I can 100% read entire novels using LingQ.

I like how motivational it is to see the number of words you know, especially since it’s so easy to add to this number. I can easily add 50 known words in Spanish in a single day. This would take 500+ exercises in Duolingo.

Fantastic App

This app is exactly what I was looking for. It allows you to learn in context all in one spot. I love that you get real people narrating the texts almost of the time as well and that you can make your own lessons out of the videos, podcasts, books, and websites you want to watch or read. I actually use it to understand websites I am looking at. The only thing I would love to see eventually is in the vocabulary review section I would love to see more interactive activities. I want to have to type or speak, not just choose the right answer. I would also love there to be a pronunciation section where you can either record and compare the pronunciation or it simply tells you how close you are. Something that this app has is that it is almost a one stop shop. With these changes I think it will be this for sure.

Thanks for your 5-star rating! We're glad you're enjoying LingQ!

Super language learning app.

I’ve been using LingQ for over a year now as my number one Polish ereader immersion tool. It’s improved my Polish immensely!

The perfect intermediate level app, but.

First I want to say that I’ve been paying for this app for a while. It’s integral to my language studying, despite the use-case being flawed for MY specific target language (Russian)- even so, I find it and the lessons inside to be invaluable.

That being said, to anyone reading this: your mileage may vary, but I truly haven’t found a replacement for LingQ’s ability to generate audio AND transcriptions AND translate words AND phrases in real time—and create flash cards, too! Which, again, depending on your target language, will vary in helpfulness (especially if your target language significantly and often modifies the spelling of words, then you end up will a million cards. But at least your LingQ coin number keeps going up, so the dopamine button is there).

The AI implementation is wonderful, especially the LynxAI- I used to painstakingly screenshot the transcriptions just to copy the text and paste them into ChatGPT to generate multiple choice questions. Now, however, that can be done in-app.

I have TWO major gripes with the AI, though:

First: Please allow for the conversations with LynxAI to be done in your preferred language, too. Sure it’s incentive to know my target language better, but when I’m asking for multiple choice questions to test my comprehension of the passage, I don’t want to be confused about the questions. But I can get over this gripe, it’s totally bypassable by using the highlight-translate function.

Second: The screen reader voice.
I cannot deeply enough express my hatred for whatever is going on with the AI voice. In Russian, when it’s reading aloud, in its ‘attempt at sounding human’, it HESITATES. IT STUTTERS. IT LITERALLY SAYS “UHHH” AS IT’S READING LARGE PASSAGES! It’s so bafflingly stupid to hear a robot sound as confused about my target language as I am, and yet it’s the one with infinite, programmed knowledge. It’s an embarrassing implementation, and it frankly enrages me. It does not engender confidence. It sounds like it didn’t want to show up to work. At least Microsoft Sam didn’t sound bored when it would read to me. The uncanny valley of sounding robotic- which, mind you, has not been a problem for years now as we have all adapted to the voices of digital helpers like Siri- has been bridged, but at what cost? If I wanted to listen to someone speak Russian with absolutely no confidence, I would simply speak into my selfie camera.

The day that the AI voice changes to something less offputting, I’ll change my review back to five stars, but unfortunately the VERY useful and integral tool of generating brand new audio for texts is being undermined by this weird implementation.

P.S., Sorry to whoever’s baby the Russian screenreader voice is, but I’m going to hold your hand when I tell you this: your baby is ugly. Looking for change, but if nothing else, I hope the staff get a laugh out of this review. Thank you.
