Good Enough, Could be Great

This app is great for hitting all the key components of CBT-i. I’ve gone through a CBT-i program before so I just needed the refresher and the accountability which this app provides. It would be great if its interface could get a facelift and update some features like sync to apple health or Apple Watch. But overall for a simple, inexpensive, sleep coach and tracker, it works well enough for me.

Not for People Who Can’t Get Back to Sleep

This app offers a lot of resources for people who have trouble falling asleep. However, like the preponderance of sleep apps, it is not very useful for people who wake up early and cannot get back to sleep. Unfortunately, I am one of those people. I typically fall asleep within 5 minutes, but typically wake up before my desired time and am rarely able to to fall back asleep.

Extremely helpful!

This app is a bargain! You do have to be self motivated and self disciplined because you have to commit to interacting every day. But the information you get , at the pace that you get it is perfect. I thought I knew a lot about sleep and a lot about getting better sleep, but I learned so much from this app, and it really solidified what I needed to do. I am sleeping so much better and I believe a lot of it had to do with Night Owl. Not fancy, but EXPERT advice in the comfort of your home and your time schedule.

A great bargain!

Well worth the money. If you follow the program I can tell you you will gain valuable, kind, straight forward but professional advise. My relationship with sleep changed for the better. Much better. Stick with it every day. Most days it takes a minute to fill out the info … some days there is reading to do on the APP or a video. ALL WITH IT. It’s hard to find a CBT-I therapist and they are expensive. THIS was the bargain of a lifetime. THANK YOU

Helping to establish a routine bedtime and sleep schedule. Informative information about sleep patterns and how the body works

Very helpful

I didn’t follow the recommendations exactly but gained a lot of new skills for addressing future bouts of insomnia with this app. I’m also now able to get out of bed easily and an hour earlier than before. I have been trying and failing to do this for years! The price of the app is definitely worth it if you are willing to commit to working the program :)

Glad I took the time to do this!!

Great App to get the basics on good sleep. The app gave me good information and also removed some stressful thoughts I had with my sleep issues. 🙏

It works!

Been using the app for 24 days now and following the program to de-program works. I’ve had multiple consecutive nights of good quality sleep and it keeps getting better. Was stuck on Ambien and wanted to stop, so and had tried a few OTC products that only worked once. Going to keep on it and see if all my sleep troubles can be put to rest.

Very helpful

This program is really helping me! I’m learning a lot and applying what I’ve learned and I think it’s helping!
I’m getting more sleep than I have in over a year.

Finally a way back to sleep!

I did not follow the app exactly, initially so this took longer than expected. Was extremely challenging with reviving my sleep drive but…it worked! I have had sleep issues for about 3 years, combo of reasons which created ongoing poor sleep habits. Completed the app, following the challenging rules and I have experienced restorative sleep again and it is life changing!!
Thank you for putting this in an app, as I don’t know of any sleep therapist in my area. I have already passed this on to many people in my life.
I know I will need to keep working on this and following all the sleep rigor, but what a reward to feel rested again and have more clarity and energy!

Helpful for sleep phase/circadian troubles

I don’t have traditional insomnia but more sleep phase issues/feeling sleepy at the wrong times - I sleep fine once I go to bed - but I was going to bed as late as 5AM, getting up between 7:30-11AM, and was trying to catch up on sleep by sleeping in on weekends. Getting up early on weekdays for a month didn’t make me sleepy at night. A sleep medicine appointment was a couple months away so I decided to try this app while waiting. I am so happy I did!

The program is supposedly individualized based on your response to sleep logs you do the first week or so, and I believe it truly is, because it is the first time that I was ever given sleep advice that truly applied to me and is helping. I am about halfway through and already going to bed by 1 or 2 and getting up around 7 every day. My family is happier. I am actually starting to feel sleepy at night.

You definitely really have to stick with it for it to work- repeating tasks and building routines and focusing on certain thoughts is part of how CBT works. Completing tasks within the app takes a minute or two most days and maybe 10-20 minutes or so once a week when you are given new education & tasks. The app could use a challenge question 1-2 times a week that asks you to name a couple things that could or are interfering with a step/task and has you troubleshoot a couple ideas that could help if any and asks you to take one action that could help if you have one (with the understanding that it’s self-reflection and content won’t be addressed specifically by the program). I have had no issues with the interface described in prior reviews so I believe at least on iPhones they have been fixed. You can zoom in and out on text with buttons on-screen, and the sleep logs are quick and easy to use. I appreciate the educational material and that important points are covered both in text & in video so it covers different learning styles and drives home key points. The videos are low budget in-office, but they’re easy to follow and they work so it’s not really important. My notifications don’t work correctly- I get a reminder to complete a sleep log after it’s already done, and the red notification circle comes & goes seemingly at random regardless of whether my tasks are completed. I just set my own bedtime reminders etc, but it would be helpful if the app gave supportive reminders at appropriate times based on our program.

Overall I highly recommend trying the app to anyone who cannot easily access (or doesn’t want to do) in-person cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia or sleep phase disorders, or to use as an additional support.

Night Owl - Sleep Coach

I am generally happy with this app. That is to say, my sleeping has improved, both qualitatively and quantitatively. I think there are a few areas in which the app could be improved, and I am providing feedback to the developer with specifics. But in general I think it’s worth the time, effort, and money as it is right now.

Very informative!

I learned a lot about healthy sleep habits and changing my negative thoughts towards insomnia. Thank you so much Sleep Coach!

Definitely works if you stick with it

The interface of this app honestly could use some updating but if you get over that and complete the program, you will see results. I’ve had severe insomnia on and off for about 8 years now. In my most recent cycle I had tried Mitrazapine, Trazodone and some other prescription meds. They would all work seasonally but my body would eventually reject them. My doctor said I needed to try a program like this now that I had been treating my anxiety and my insomnia hadn’t subsided.

I say all of this to say that after the 60 days I had completely reset my circadian rhythm and not longer needed sleeping pills to sleep. The process seems tedious but it genuinely works.

Needs work

Just writing in to say that it’s only my first day using the app and there are problems. The video has no way to play in the intro lecture. Also the text on the sleep logs is not up to accessibility stabdards... like at all. It’s white on light, light gray and impossible to see and i have excellent eye sight.

Sleep

Thanks! I’m sleeping better than ever!

Keeps restarting back to day 1

I can’t get past day 8 of logs. Keeps restarting back to day 1 as if I never have logged in or used the app. Can get to phase 2 which is supposed to start at day 9. I’ve gone through 16 days now of just doing the same logs

Totally works if you stick with it!

The advice is pretty straight forward but this app helps stay consistent with it. I started noticing a major difference with sleep within a couple weeks, but the program lasts almost 6 weeks.

Update... towards the end of the 56 days I started having terrible sleep again, and it made me realize the app has done nothing to address external issues that affect sleep. If your insomnia is truly psychological, this will work great. But, the app mentions *nothing* about factors such as medication/health issues that can affect sleep, family, etc. Like, if you have a noisy family member waking you up at night (or a child waking), deep breathing and mindfulness isn’t going to help. And I’ve been snoring horribly and had no idea til my other half mentioned it 50 days into the program. So, I wish the app had mentioned looking for external factors affecting sleep early on vs ignoring it completely. I would have had my doc check my meds on like, day 2 if there had been a mention of it. Turns out they can affect my sleep quality.

CBT-I for Insomnia Win!

I have and mild insomnia for 5 years, then it became severe over 5 months. I would lay in bed for 5-7 hours a night awake but yearning to sleep so badly. My body would be all tingly and ready to sleep, but I could not pass into that unconscious state! I tried muscle relaxers, CBD oil, melatonin, magnesium glycinate and a few other things that just failed miserably! I went to my VA clinic and asked for CBT-I and they agreed and started me on it. But I have two small children at home to take care of and the clinic is a good 30 minute drive away so going in weekly to every other week just wasn’t sustainable. So I searched for an app that could be my CBT-I instructor and found this app. I have a strong resolve to accomplish goals and getting thru CBT-I is one of them. I am currently on day 32 of the app program and following it to a tee.
Bless The Lord! It is working. I am going to bed sleepy and falling asleep within minutes and staying asleep! I wake up and get right out of bed at my designated time and stick to it no matter how tempting it is to stay and get some more sleep.
CBT-I has been proven many times over to be the most effective CURE for insomnia and I’m proving to be just another case of success.
Truly follow the instructions, commit to it fully and you will see the sandman again!
Wonderful money spent on this app!!

Update: it’s been a year now and my sleep has been so good. I follow the rules everyday and night. I go to bed sleepy, fall asleep, and stay asleep all night long. Sure, I have an occasional “bad night”, but then usually by the next night it’s back to sleep again! This app is gold!

Buggy wasted my time for a month

I was working with this, had glitches logging in here and there. Part way through the phase where I agree to get up at the same time every morning, all my data disappeared and it reset. What a waste of my time!
