About
Power Grid Operator Exam Prep is an independent trainer for the four System
Operator Certification examinations of the North American Electric Reliability
Corporation (NERC): Reliability Coordinator (RC); Balancing, Interchange and
Transmission (BT); Transmission Operator (TO); and Balancing and Interchange (BI).
ONE BANK, FOUR CREDENTIALS
All four examinations are drawn from the same six content domains and the same
31 knowledge areas. What changes between them is only how many scored questions
each area carries — and that table is published. Pick your credential and the
whole app re-weights: your readiness estimate, the order of your weak areas, and
the way a mock paper is sampled. Every answer you give counts towards all four.
SCORED THE WAY THE EXAMINATION IS
NERC passes candidates on an absolute cut score, not a percentage: 92 of 120 for
RC and BT, 76 of 100 for TO and BI. So the headline figure here is a projected
score out of the paper, and the weak-areas list ranks knowledge areas by how many
scored questions they are actually costing you — an area worth five questions
that you are shaky on outranks one worth a single question you have never seen.
MOCK PAPERS SAMPLED TO THE OUTLINE
A mock paper draws exactly the number of questions the published content outline
lists for each of the 31 knowledge areas — not an even split. Three hours, flag
and return freely, no feedback until you submit, then a full review with an
explanation and a reference on every question.
A CONTROL ROOM THAT IS DIFFERENT EVERY TIME
Two generated displays, rebuilt from scratch each time you open them:
• a six-bus one-line with its flows, ratings and an N-1 contingency analysis
report — read the percentage column, find the worst contingency, work out the
post-contingency margin, decide what the exceedance obliges you to do;
• a Balancing Authority AGC control board — frequency, interchange, bias,
reserve and the units on AGC, with the ACE left for you to calculate.
Plus twenty calculation drills with worked solutions: ACE, governor droop,
frequency response, rate of change of frequency, three-phase power, the power
triangle, per unit, capacitor output at depressed voltage, line losses,
post-contingency margin and load relief.
1,224 ORIGINAL QUESTIONS
Written from the freely published sources — the four content outlines, the NERC
Glossary of Terms and 60 currently enforceable Reliability Standards — and every
batch checked again by a separate pass against those same sources. Each question
carries NERC's own cognitive level: recall, application or analysis.
ALSO INSIDE
• 31 Library reference cards — seven must-know numbers and a short essay each
• Spaced repetition: a question you miss comes back, on a schedule
• Works entirely offline. No account, no sign-in, no data collected.
• iPhone, iPad and Mac, light and dark, with a manual override for a night
shift. Progress stays on the device you study on.
