A Different Kind of Resident Evil Experience
I started playing on July 11th after seeing an advertisement on Discord and decided to try it because I love the Resident Evil universe and have always enjoyed RTS games. My first impression was already positive because of the atmosphere, music, sound effects, and overall presentation. It genuinely feels like Resident Evil in some ways, especially with the characters, sounds, and even some RE style puzzles.
That being said, it is still primarily a mobile RTS game. The Resident Evil characters are fun to collect, but they sometimes feel more like skins with familiar names rather than fully realised versions of the characters. Some character models also feel a little off, which is disappointing for such an iconic franchise.
Gameplay wise, this is where the game shines. The base building, upgrading, resource management, hero system, and combat are genuinely enjoyable. I love watching my combat power grow and seeing my base develop. The combat is satisfying, and the ability to speed things up makes the experience much smoother.
One thing that surprised me is how generous the game can be. There are plenty of free resources, speedups, gems, and events available. While spending money can give you advantages, I do not feel the game is as pay to win as people might expect. Active free to play players can absolutely progress and compete if they use good strategies and participate in alliance events.
The alliance system is probably one of the biggest strengths of this game. A good alliance completely changes the experience. Being in an active, organised alliance with good leadership makes the game much more enjoyable and gives you a reason to keep playing.
My biggest complaints are the bugs, which still need a lot of work, and the lack of deeper Resident Evil integration. I think Capcom could have been more involved with making the characters, story, and overall presentation feel more authentic to the franchise.
Overall, I think Resident Evil Survival Unit is a great mobile RTS with a Resident Evil theme. If you are expecting a traditional survival horror Resident Evil game, you may be disappointed. But if you enjoy strategy games and want something different set in the Resident Evil universe, I would recommend giving it a try.
