I have tried many crypto and BTC exchanges. Swan, Coinbase, Kraken, Binance, Gemini, Strike and even ones like MECX, Polarity and CoinEx back in the day. All had their strengths but River has been my “go to” for the past 3+ years. Clean UI, easy to see and use dashboard, BTC interest on cash, auto buys, low fees, proof of reserves, etc. Everything I want in a couple easy to use screens.

Use exclusively for buying bitcoin and keeping cash for purchases. They pay a little over 3% on idle cash. No issues ever, they post proof of reserves, CEO is accessible. Can’t do better.

After the recent Coldcard bug that cost Bitcoiners who did everything right millions of dollars, I moved my BTC to River. Once I got my multisig set up, I successfully moved everything back to cold storage. River is the only exchange I trust during this time. Thanks.
River promotes self-custody. Funny how that works when they’re holding your funds for 21 days
**EDIT:** River's team reached out after this review and resolved it. Funds are back the next day, not day 35. Bumping to 4 stars.
Worth noting the original date wasn't a hard limit, it was a default nobody had looked at. Once someone did, it moved immediately. That's a fixable process gap, not a bad company. Support was solid throughout and the fees and transaction history were always transparent.
Still worth knowing the ACH hold and possible closure flow before you deposit, but they made it right fast.

I deposited $810 via ACH, waited out their 10-day hold, then attempted to send bitcoin to my own wallet.
Despite being fully verified at onboarding, I was hit with another verification check and told to wait an additional business day for review. I emailed asking to cancel so I could withdraw to the same Chase account I funded with. Ten minutes later, my account was closed.
I work in fintech. Returns on canceled transactions/account closures are resolved via RTP or ACH, same day. This is light work for any Risk team (I doubt River even has a Risk team). A 21-day hold signals operational immaturity that will cap River’s ability to scale or compete.
Without fixing the fundamentals, they will remain as a fringe buy/sell wallet, not a platform, while a real unicorn with better risk models builds the features and customer experiences that actually matter.
River sells self-custody as a core value prop, yet their risk model can’t distinguish a self-custody transfer from fraud on a verified account. That’s not a risk problem, it’s a product research problem. They don’t know who their customer is.
That old, never-updated self-custody wallet app on your phone with dust amounts from 2012 that you never use? That’s River in 3-5 years. These operational failures are markers of a company with no vertical or horizontal integration, with a “duress mode” as their flagship paywalled feature.
TLDR: I came to River to save on fees and ended up locked out of my own capital for more than 30+ days, in a market that doesn’t wait.
