Unclear how to export

My goal is transcribe audio from meetings with clients into text, then to export said text to private AI to create a summary of the meeting. I love that transcription is handled privately on device, but for the life of me, I cannot figure out how to export the text. The user guide provides instructions to use the “Export” option in the file menu, which does not seem to exist, nor can I find the option anywhere else. I’ll probably reach out to the developer for support, but it shouldn’t be this hard. Using on an M5 iPad Pro.

Hello! You can export a transcript from an iPad by first opening the file, then tapping on the Document Menu (this is the one that has the name of the transcript itself, and a little V-shaped down arrow) and picking Export, then the type of file you want to export (HTML, Markdown, CSV, etc). This will open a standard iOS Share Sheet where you can pick where to send the exported file. If you need additional help, please get in touch by email, via the Contact Customer Support link inside the app, as we can’t provide detailed support via App Store review responses (by email, we can do things like send screenshots or dig into technical details if there’s a problem). Thanks!

Not Understanding the High Ratings

Just downloaded and subscribed to this app and right away it repeatedly crashes every time I use the search and replace feature. And why am I having to use the search and replace feature? Because in practically every other sentence there are words that were transcribed incorrectly. The errors are so bad it’s difficult figuring out what was actually said to correct in the transcription. Does it do more than the transcribe feature in Apple Notes and Voice Memos apps? Yes. It will combine multiple separately-recorded audio tracks (say, from a Zoom recording), and include time stamps, allow you to edit/correct it’s errors, change the names it assigns to participants of the audio, etc. - which are all things I need - but with the errors and search/replace (for those errors) crashes make me question whether even the relatively low subscription fee is worth it.

Hello! I’m sorry to hear that you have encountered a crash while using the search and replace feature. If you get in contact with Customer Support using the link inside the app, we can look into that for you. As far as transcription accuracy goes, no AI transcription is perfect, but Transcriptionist includes a variety of different AI brain sizes — larger ones take up more space and run slower, but provide more accurate transcription — so you can choose the one that suits you best. If your device is powerful enough, we find the “Large (v3 Turbo)” to be a particularly good balance (I use it myself to transcribe hours of audio every week). Hope that helps!

Seeing good progress

Wow, what a few months makes and I'm happy to see some UX improvements. So I'm back to evaluating this application. I would like to see better integration from Ferrite to Transcriptionist. It's also confused why I cannot use large brain on my iPad Pro when I have more than enough on device space. Why tease it and then say I cannot have it? Looking to bump to 4 or 5 star in the future.

Hello! To be able to use an AI Brain, your device needs two things: enough storage space to download it, and enough working memory (“RAM”) to run it. All iPad Pro models have lots of storage space, so (unless you’ve filled it up, of course) you probably have enough to download even the largest AI Brain. But only some of the latest models have enough working memory for the largest brain. If your device doesn’t have enough working memory for a brain, Transcriptionist won’t waste your storage space and bandwidth downloading something you won’t be able to use. If you believe it has made a mistake about it, please get in touch by email using the Customer Support link inside the app so we can investigate. Thanks!

How do you use this?

I heard about this app in the iPad Pros podcast and decided to give it a try as I need to transcribe audio and happy to pay for it. Problem is I haven't a clue how this application works. I have an iPad Pros M4 11" w/ 256GB. I record an audio file on Ferrite, but then there is no way to upload it to this app. Author/Dev - please email me when this is a bit more useful, I'd love to try it out.

Very nice transcription but minor improvement better

Accuracy of transcription is acceptable though sometimes words are missing. It saves a lot of work to clearly understand the speaker.

One improvement I am looking forward to is to collate the transcripted text in a clip with Ferrite so that some words may be positioned in the waveform to facilitate editing the corresponding clip. I mean it would be better to integrate the Transcriptionist
Into Ferrite, or vice versa.

It is a really good audio editor app!

Works very well for me

I’ve been running this on my MacBook Pro with the largest model and it’s been great. Very happy with the app.

Integrate with Ferrite

What I really need and I would LOVE to pay for is a transcribe option in Ferrite!! My dream intergration would be automated "Show Notes" in the notes part of the info panel. Having to send to another app to transcribe and another app to write the show notes is a mess I would pay to get out of!

Great implementation

Love this app. It’s a huge time-saver. I know this isn’t part of the whisper API yet, but if you could find a way to detect and diarise different voices from a single audio track, that would be incredible.

Fails more than it works

First of all, this is a GUI for the OpenAI Whisper project. But as implemented on iOS in my first several tests, it has failed way more often than it has worked. Does your phone go to sleep because transcription is so slow? It fails with no notification. Is your audio file 32 bit? Again, it seems to fail without notification. I’m guessing here, since, again, there are no prompts or pop-ups to tell you what’s happening. The circular completion pie tells you something, but not if you turn away from your phone. Can you multi-task out of the app while transcription runs? I’m not sure, but I don’t think so.

Also, it uses the file name to name the speaker, not the transcription file. So all of your transcriptions are by default called “Untitled,” even when you import audio. And your speaker is called “Episode 6” or whatever.

Seems like it would be much improved with two settings: force phone to not sleep during transcription, and “name transcription file with audio file name.”

Response from developer

Hello, and thanks for your feedback! We recommend keeping Transcriptionist the frontmost app while performing a transcription on iPhone, as transcribing speech into text requires a lot of memory and processing resources, and if you switch to another app, it will have to give up those resources to let the new app use them. We’re considering adding an option to keep the screen awake during transcription so you can keep an eye on the progress. If you’re encountering a technical problem beyond that (for example, an incompatible audio file), please get in touch with Customer Support from the Tools/Settings (“gear button”) menu inside the app so we can investigate that for you. Thanks!

A neat app, but it needs work.

I transcribed two different podcasts with this app that were a little bit over an hour long. Large chunks of the podcast were omitted in the transcription. It’s a need app, but it needs to be able to work better with transcribing and not leave out pieces of the text. on one podcast I was working with, although it got the end of the podcast, it left out 20 minutes right in the middle of the podcast.
