I was scammed by people posting they were going to give me leads. All lists provided were trash. So I reported them and asked for a refund, now I received an email that I owe money? To my surprise. I log back in, which I thought I had closed the account, and long behold, it is still active and it’s charging me. I will not pay for scam. Refund and close my account

Upwork must not be wise and professional decision for serious projects. Neither Upwork nor their freelancers can understand the significance of real serious project.

It shows on the app that they’ve blocked my account and there’s no simple way to contact them…’my account still login and I can search but I don’t if it will work to by software or anything on the app.

Frustrating, Incompetent, and Completely Broken System
I’ve had the worst possible experience with Upwork. Some fraudulent company—going by the name Compendious Network—used my personal phone number with their fake email address. I have no idea how Upwork “verified” it, but now I can’t even link my own number to my own account. Let that sink in.
There is no customer care number. No real email support. Just some labyrinth of a support page that jumps around and loses your entire chat history like a bad video game glitch. I was messaging someone named “John” and now even that thread is gone—poof. Zero accountability. Zero transparency.
Their so-called “Trust & Safety” team blocked the fake account (great), but that still doesn’t fix the underlying issue: my phone number is still locked to someone else’s account, and I can’t use it for my own. How is that even acceptable in 2025?
The platform is riddled with inefficiencies, broken support channels, and a complete lack of real-time human assistance. This is not just bad UX—this is negligent customer handling.

There is no contact for phone via customer service which isn’t uncommon, however they use bots to respond to client issues and concerns, never quoting policy and giving very generic responses. I have spent ample amounts of money over the years as a client and recently had a terrible experience as it seems
The freelancers have a hard time living up Their portfolio, had someone take money from me and threaten to return it only after I promised to lie and say they completed the work and give a 5 star review, they lied and after I paid them they left me 1 star. All work customer revive keeps giving me auto responses and bot messages. Trash customer service.

Already lost $1000 from contractors failing to do the job they contracted to do. Support is minimal, dispute process is even worse. I do not recommend.

Upwork is is obsolete
I thought about writing a negative review about how Upwork failed to protect me against a fraudulent developer from Ecuador, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized why they wouldn’t step in to force the dev guy to reimburse me. Heck, they didn’t do anything about it. I lost $1600 to the guy and had nothing to show for it. And here’s why:
Upwork is already obsolete. I got quotes for design and dev teams for $100,000 to build the app I need. I’ve replaced all of those and the need for a design team with sites like Lovable.dev. I have a robust working prototype and pitched it to a backend dev guy who is willing to build with me for $30k. No need for Upwork. Why would I have them in the middle anyway? They were supposed to protect me as a client as my escrow agent. They did nothing to protect me.
Upwork is 90% scams. The few good people who are on Upwork are going to have to pivot to work with these new ai dev apps. And I don’t work or get a plug for any of them btw.

Terrible
I was just about to post and they made me verify my identity which I understand. Won’t even let me take the picture of my drivers license, the camera won’t focus properly. It’s a glitch in the system they need to fix ASAP. Tried this on multiple phones after turning everything on in settings!
