Extremely Disao

This is actually the first time I have bothered to review an app, but the experience was so bad that I wanted others to know and hopefully avoid wasting their time.

I was excited about finding a nutrition app where I could chat both to make it easier to track my nutrition vs. goals and to dive deeper into some of the metrics and how to improve.

The first issue is that the app kept forgetting things already outlined. This memory fade cost a lot of time because I had to keep repeating myself.

Second, there was an issue where repeatedly it would simply reply with something like “Sorry I can’t find the food you are trying to adjust,” even though I wasn’t trying to adjust anything. I would then just reply “focus” and it would get back on track.

These kind of repeated inputs are what drove the final thing that put me off this product. I was trying to work through how to lower my sodium and all of a sudden I got a message “You have reached your limit of 200 chats for the day.” Mind you there was no warning, nothing I saw when I signed up ever mentioned a limit. This was my first day with the app, and I spent a lot of effort trying to figure out how best to communicate with it, and digging into a lot of questions, but probably half of my chats were trying to get it to correct when it had memory fade or glitched.

Overall, even within the core product there are big problems. It was significantly off in calculating nutrition from a photo I uploaded. Other times even when I gave it a specific brand of something I ate, it miscalculated the nutritional info.

Overall, like a lot of AI tools this one was clearly rushed to production before it was ready

Identify

The Welling AI does not identify your meal very adequate even when I take a close up picture of my meal

Best tracker!

This is probably best tracker for someone who doesn't like recording things on Notes or any other platforms. You can literally tell the chat, and it will record it for you! So simple, so easy!

Food Database

The app is super easy to use and has clean aesthetics. Their database actually does a great job showing a wide range of food cultures I eat from too

Inaccurate but looks nice

Pretty design but I found the AI to be way off with very limited options to correct the mistakes. Ultimately the convenience of the AI was undercut by bad results and limited editing capabilities and so I moved on.

Not true AI

This is a prompted response App not AI. Simple things I say like “I didn’t eat breakfast “ it doesn’t understand. It also scolds me for 100 calorie breakfast choices (Oatmeal) because it has “Maple and Brown Sugar” It says its High in calories huh? The oatmeal has less than one gram of sugar. And I gave it the entire label. It is not thinking -it is giving canned responses to the word sugar.

Hi, thanks for the feedback and sorry to hear you're experiencing these issues. Sounds like a bug that shouldn't happen. Can I ask you to email support@welling.ai with this issue and the team will have a look! Thank you

Great App

Setup was easy and app is great! No hidden adds or purchases

Not Even Close to Ready

Welling is a typical food tracking app, but with the entry and search functionality replaced by a conversational AI. Unfortunately, the AI is absolutely not ready for prime-time, which means having the entire UX built around it is a terrible idea. It can’t retrieve basic search queries. It can’t adjust former entries consistently. It makes terrible assumptions about serving sizes, etc.

You’re essentially forced to save everything as a favorite meal, which entirely defeats the purpose of the AI.

I will say the interface is very smooth and intuitive. If you weren’t forced to access everything via the AI, it might be a great app.

Hi Jonny, thanks for the feedback and sorry to hear you're experiencing these issues. That is definitely not how Welling should behave. Could I ask you to reach out on support@welling.ai and we can have a look at your account and see if we can resolve the issue? Thanks!

Inaccurate and unreliable, but still cool

The idea is amazing and the ai meal prep feature is neat. However, I’ve found the ai estimations to be extremely unreliable and inconsistent. If you put in the same meal twice, it could give you two different sets of Macros. The app told me that 2 oz of my home cooked meal was 180 calories. I copied the same meal and adjusted for 3 oz and it told me, one extra ounce of the same meal was now 1,600 calories.
I have to double check and edit each meal, something I thought I’d be doing very little of while PAYING for an app. Hopefully in a few years the technology is advanced enough to keep up with what this company is advertising. A little annoyed I payed for three months. My expectations were too high.

Thanks for the feedback! It seems like there is maybe a bug in your account. This is not how Welling should behave, apologies for that! It would be very helpful if you could reach out to support@welling.ai with your account and we will have a look at resolving that issue.

Food database is limited and inaccurate

I think this is going in the right direction in terms id user experience. However the core issue is that the database is limited. Some of the things i scan or eat cannot be found and it’s cumbersome to scan/save etc. sometimes the macros come back inaccurate compared to the information online or on fitness pal.

Thanks for the feedback. We are working to increase the scanning database for Australian users!

Has potential

I was excited about this because I’ve been an avid user of MFP, but it would get the same things incorrect, the estimates would be way off and it would glitch often. I ended up going back to MFP. I really tried to make it work

Not accurate

This app is not accurate at all. While I was trying to make adjustments to what I had previously input, it just kept adding those calories to my daily total and dwindling it down until I had about 200 cal left for the day and I couldn’t get it to correct itself no matter what I said.

Need more tuning when it comes to portions

The app concept is great, but the scale is way too off, especially when measuring fruits,

The only thing that’s “free” is the trial

This app is 100% NOT FREE - the false ads on social media tells you that it’s a free app.. it is not. This would be way better if there were some of the features that was free (example, just the chat function where you’d have to pay premium for the photo step) but you do y even get that. Absolutely pathetic use of false advertising

Response from developer

Hi, thank you for the message. The app has free trials available. So you can try it out for free and if you don't like it you can cancel the trial and if you do like it you can continue. You will only be charged 7 days after you start a trial. We don't advertise the app to be completely free.

Buggy

I really do like the app but has been fairly buggy lately. Won’t auto log, mostly logging issues. Making it take way too long to plan my week.

Glitch

I love the “math” that Welling provides, but the coaching is off. When I explain that I only eat two meals a day, she will ask the next day if I forgot to enter dinner. Also, I am recovering from major surgery and not able to log 8000 steps right now, which I have told her multiple times. She always promises to make a note and apologizes, but nothing changes. I even said moving forward to just do the math for me and not worry about the coaching piece. Again nothing changes. Heartfelt apologies and promises to make a note of the issue are nice but clearly are not happening.

Was expecting more

Love talking to AI, unfortunately app not calculate calories intake correctly, so I had to check labels and adjust manually. Even when I scanned nutrition. Weird AI was not working it out and calculating correctly. I’m glad I took week trial, I won’t be taking the subscription as I can really get the same/ similar with Copilot

Be careful of free trail

I select the 7 day free trail, but still being charged for $25.00 dollars, I don’t know why?

False advertisement

App is not free. It’s takes your information, then you rate the app, then It tells you to subscribe for a plan.

Response from developer

Hi, please don't make these false claims. Welling is the only weight loss coaching app available that allows you to track and chat/ask about your diet at the same time. To make this happen, we run many AI models and that comes with a cost. We never advertise to be a free app. We do mention that you have a free trial. You can try free for 7 days and see if you like it. If you don't like it you can cancel the trial.

The app keeps crashing

The functionality is ok and works well for calorie counting, but it keeps crashing. There are days when I log the foods diligently only to see the app frozen and not counting any of it. Additionally, if I go on airplane mode the app logs out. Both are frustrating especially for a paid app. If this doesn’t get fixed I will uninstall and stop paying for it - free versions of chat AI count the calories just fine.
