Verdict
The clearest difference is review sentiment: COXPAL at 77% against SMUD's 23%. COXPAL also leads on iOS requirement (9.0 vs 15.0). SMUD's advantage is rating (4.4 vs 3.6) and update cadence (every 2 months vs every 7 months). On price, ads, in-app purchases and monetization model there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Neither carries in-app purchases, so what you see is what you pay.
SMUD holds the better App Store score, 4.4 against 3.6. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: SMUD has 931 ratings behind it against 25, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 23% of SMUD's written reviews are positive against 77% of COXPAL's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
SMUD ships an update every 2 months, COXPAL every 7 months. The most recent releases landed on November 2, 2026 and November 3, 2026 respectively.
