If yes, this app is for you. "Plane Above Me" answers that exact question. You can scan the sky manually by pressing its Scan button or let the app auto-detect flights. Once it detects the sound of aircrafts, it will retrieve live flight data for you. Behind the scenes, it uses AI sound classification models to achieve that. Privacy friendly: 1) Location data is used for scanning for flights nearby only. It is never stored and sent anywhere. 2) If activated, audio data is analyzed on device for aircraft sound identification only. It is never stored and sent anywhere.

Verdict
The clearest difference is in-app purchases: Plane Above Me at none against Nix Toolkit's 10. Plane Above Me also leads on update cadence (every 5 days vs every 6 weeks) and review sentiment (62% vs 33%). Nix Toolkit's advantage is rating (4.7 vs 4.3) and ratings volume (214 vs 34). On price, ads and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Nix Toolkit sells 10 in-app purchases, starting at $4.99 per month. Plane Above Me asks for nothing beyond the download.
Nix Toolkit holds the better App Store score, 4.7 against 4.3. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Nix Toolkit has 214 ratings behind it against 34, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 33% of Nix Toolkit's written reviews are positive against 62% of Plane Above Me's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Nix Toolkit ships an update every 6 weeks, Plane Above Me every 5 days. The most recent releases landed on November 3, 2026 and October 24, 2026 respectively.
