Services depend on 4G network availability, a cellular connection and GPS signal. Without anyone or more of these things, operability may be limited or precluded, including access to response center and emergency support. Further, if and when 4G network changes or is discontinued, or the underlying technology required to support service becomes obsolete, then the Connected Services will not work, and Toyota will need to discontinue impacted services. Services require account registration through the Toyota app and acceptance of the Connected Services Terms of Use: For the U.S., Hawaii, and Puerto Rico: https://www.toyota.com/content/dam/toyota/privacyvts/pdf/connected-services-terms-use.pdf. Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is monetization model: Tesla at free against Toyota's free with in-app purchases. Tesla also leads on review sentiment (61% vs 38%) and update cadence (every 2 weeks vs monthly). Toyota's advantage is ratings volume (896K vs 127K). On price, rating, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

On the App Store both sit at effectively the same score — 4.7 for Tesla against 4.8 for Toyota. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Toyota has 896K ratings behind it against 127K, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews are what separate them: 61% of Tesla's written reviews are positive against 38% of Toyota's.
