  • Junk

Apple makes the app but must be to busy trying to faze out some more users of the older phones than keep their own apps working. This compass app has not worked for at least two years. And by not working it doesn’t matter where you turn it faces North! So I either live at the South Pole or the app is crashed and they don’t care.
  • Wretched! Could be DEADLY!

I keep hoping it will get updated so it is accurate consistently. But it just gets worse. In fifteen minutes it has shown due north as NE, SSE, SSW and W. Should it really vary by up to 270 degrees every few minutes? Should my car steering wheel vary in accuracy by that much? That would be a life and death matter. Well, so is this. I’d say it might be properly corrected or be properly discontinued when some poor soul relies on it and then dies lost in the wild because it failed repeatedly when needed the most.
  • How can apple screw up a compass?

It’s literally a magnet. You can make one with a bowl of water, a cork, and a magnetized sewing needle. Apple can’t even make one in an $800 smartphone.

Point. North. That’s all it’s supposed to do. This app is off between 75 and 120 degrees. It’s not a matter of true vs magnetic. I have an actual compass sitting next to me, and I’ve compared it with the gyrocompass on a US Coast Guard vessel and this app is always off by a random amount. Do not trust it.

Oh, and my one star reviews constantly vanish. Apparently compass isn’t the only thing from apple we can’t trust.
  • Simple and Accurate

Not only is this easy and accurate it also has a leveling feature. The center on the compass calibrates the horizontal level. Great in my camper. 👍🏼👍🏼❤️it
  • Does Not Point to True North - Not Accurate

When calibration is checked against a known bearing, it varies greatly around a 360 degree compass check course. It is fine to use when figuring out the general direction, but I don’t recommend it for serious navigation when accuracy matters. Certainly not for marine navigation - you’ll run yourself aground, or worse! I’m quite surprised and disappointed that Apple would let this by. I recommend free compass apps available here in the Apple App Store, such as Commander Compass. Most can be upgraded for a minor subscription fee. All should be “calibration checked” against a known True North bearing before considering for use in serious navigation.
  • Fun and working app. iPhone 8+ iOS 16.4.1 (a)

I like this app. Whenever I am bored, I just play around with it. I like turning around and watching the needle change directions. Also, if I’m just wondering what direction I am facing, I open this app. All in all, this app is a boredom buster and is fun to play around with
  • It used to work

I rarely use this app but it had always worked before. Today, when I want it, it doesn’t move one but no matter what direction I am facing. There’s no menu or anything to change or update settings and I never had to do anything special before but now it is useless to me.
  • The Apple Compass is biased East by approximately 35 degrees.

I was a passenger on a ferry and when we pulled into terminal, it was apparent that the compass was significantly biased East by ≈35 degrees.

It is possible that I didn’t calibrate the location services on my phone accurately as of the most recent update; however, I do not think that the orientation should be skewed by that significant an amount on the current iOS operating system (the latest one: 16.4.1).
  • Enough to get you killed.

On the equinox, a couple of days ago, I decided to see how accurate this app was. Pointing directly at the sun as it rose above the horizon, it should show exactly 90 degrees. This app was off by 12 degrees. The elevation was, however; fairly accurate.
  • Completely inaccurate😡

It used to be a good app, but not anymore very disappointed with Apple product. it fluctuates by 15° every few minutes it’s unreliable😡😡😡😡 did the earths magnetic field change? is our planet having a polarity reversal? is there a solar, magnetic flare? no, it’s just crappy software developers with no experience from India that Apple hires to save money. this app is a safety hazard.
