Dont waste your time
Tried it out. Great at first. Crystal clear calls, then suddenly no call option. Now only video calls. Video meeting calls. Are they still private and part of my chat room? No idea. Not clear within the app. Now video calls starting when i dont click on “call” (not that any of them ever worked after the first call) just ringing forever and being frustrated for well over an hour. Feels super sketchy to be honest. I wont be returning.

Good for nerds - hard for consumers
This app is great. It is always improving and e2e validation is coming along. If identity could be tied to phone number 3pid and verified on other devices by qr code via the registered phone it would be smoother.
Initial setup requires some steps that could be made more intuitive to the consumer. Custom server address, for example. It would be great if the app could get that info from an invite URL sent by SMS or email.
At the moment the app is fantastic for anyone who is a little nerdy and doesn’t mind searching stuff out. The average middle-age consumer will have less patience for it.

Best messaging app in App Store
One of the best messaging apps with e2e encryption and group chat encryption. And it’s FREE. The best thing is that I can use my own server.
Great app.
Half of these low ratings are people who have no idea what they are doing. I have had no issues with this aside from fixing the learning curve.
Too hard and unfriendly
Tried twice. On an iPad it’s too cryptic. It claims to save your iPad password but it lies. You have to ask for a new strong password reset.

Empty room issue
You know what’s really annoying and I can’t do anything about it but I should????
When rooms are empty and I can’t leave them!! They just appear in my messages or room log but I can’t get rid of them. It’s so absolutely unacceptable at this point. Months go by, update after update, but no one seems to be able to fix this issue. I have like 20 empty rooms that take up my screen that when I try to leave, they say the room doesn’t exist therefore I can’t leave them...........

Umable to reconfigure server
It seems impossible to reconfigure it to point to different servers, it just wait forever trying to connect to the wrong server. Also it would be useful to be able to configure multiple synapse servers.
Pretty poor UX
Chat updates feel quite laggy, especially notifications. Biggest flaw is an inability to show me the first unread message in a thread. It's almost unusable because of this; it just take you to the last messages and you have to scroll backwards.
