Great learning app for beginners
I think this approach actually gets you used to playing single strings quickly and pick up finger dexterity and speed that you’ll need before diving into more complex lessons.
Design is great too with the ability to slow the speed and look at the whole tab before playing. I’m excited for the new music theory course too, which will help me better grasp what I’m playing.

Best Guitar Lessons App by Far
When we started using the Gibson App our progress started to really ramp up. The lessons are short but very focused on a single technique and then you’re given a handful of songs to practice that give a ton of practice on that technique. The feedback is incredibly accurate, which is not the case with many other apps.
Another thing we like is many of the songs are the real songs, not some cheesy cover that you play along with.
Timing and muscle memory are emphasized throughout. The app has a ton of fun features too, like a built in digital amp and a gamified experience that gives you goals to strive for.
I am 56 years old snd my son is nine and after a year of playing and exploring other apps we agree, Gibson app is helping us progress faster than all of the others.

False Promotions and a Glitchy App
I bought a new Epiphone that had a pamphlet offering 14 day free trial if you download the app. That’s not true whatsoever, it’s only a 7 day trial and only works if you sign up for the Yearly subscription, not the monthly. This is false advertising and insanely frustrating.
Secondly, I wanted to explore this app before diving in and committing to a $200 purchase for a year subscription, and the app helped make my mind up. So beyond glitchy, and cannot do anything without the app crashing or freezing. I wanted to like this app, but holy cow, the first impression was atrocious.
Regardless, I decided to try it out and see what this app is all about using the lied-about 7 day trial. Man oh man, this app is straight hot garbage. The timing/calibration is absolutely trash and makes the actual app itself basically useless. I’m an intermediate guitarist and have played for years, but I can’t even get through the intro lesson played on a single string because the app doesn’t want to register when I hit a note. It literally doesn’t work.
This app is so, so, so bad.
Peace out Gibson ✌️

Hi there, could you please reach out to us at app.support@gibson.com so that we can resolve the crashes you are experiencing? We recommend using a pair of headphones for the best experience, however this is definitely not the expected behaviour of our app, and we would love for you to experience it as intended. Sweet child solo
Response from developer
Hi there, thanks for your review! Within our app we have 4 versions of this song as we try to make it accessible for all guitar players. You might have been playing the beginner or intermediate version we have where the solo is simplified. Please reach out to us at app.support@gibson.com if you have any questions, comments or suggestions. Best regards, Matthew
Some holes in what is being taught
But I notice no real jazz and no roots stuff, like rockabilly, jump blues, country swing, dixie... Obviously, for some of that stuff guitar wasn’t really the feature of that genre, but there are decent examples in each style where it very much is integral. Rockabilly is what made everyone want to play guitar. There’s some fun finger picking stuff I see in the lessons, but all relatively modern and missing a whole stylistic phase of guitar music that’s surprisingly absent. If you’re looking for specific hit songs guitarists would be attracted to, there’s no shortage of music students could learn from by artists like Brian Setzer, Johnny Burnette, Rosetta Tharpe, and Carl Perkins; or for jazz looking at everyone from Joe Pass, John McLaughlin, Pat Metheny to Frank Gambale.
I’d love to see stylistic diversity way outside the states too, maybe incorporating Latin music, African, etc. Even without any of that, I think there’s some key elements that would be awfully hip to include for guitarists looking to know how we got to today, or expand their harmonic and and melodic understand of music.
