  • Predatory business model

This app uses a predatory business model, specifically targeting people who are bad with money. It is not as simple as “downloading the app” to see your subscriptions. It’s fairly easy, but not as their marketing suggests (I knew this going into it, but still). It also does not let you know pricing until after you connect your bank/cards, then forces you into a 7 day trial that auto-renews and charges you. You do, within reason, get to choose your price, but I’d like that option AFTER my trial expires, as the whole point of the app was to find subscriptions I forgot I was paying for. I will not be at all surprised if I start getting spam emails from card companies after connecting this app. The features in the app are nice, but for me it missed several annual and monthly subscriptions I knew I had, and included seemingly random recurring payments (like Venmo transactions), and your subscriptions, the main selling point of this app, are not prominently shown, rather encouraging you to budget and save. If you want to use this app for a few days to cancel some subscriptions and get a very basic overview of your income/spending, it might be worth it, but don’t forget to cancel the premium membership before it bills. A lot of times your bank offers similar features to this app, for free.

  • You have to add a checking account to use this app

I don’t have a checking account… I only have a debit card bank account. I wanted to know if I had multiple subscriptions, you know, like the Rocket Money commercials advertises. I was able to sign into my bank card successfully however the app persisted on a checking account. It was required to sign into the app with a checking account, if you don’t it keeps you stuck on that first screen. I did sign in with my bank card and I was getting messages saying new sign in into my bank card app. I was a little worried because I had like 3 of those messages. I changed my password and nothing bad happened to my bank card or nothing. I guess my sign in info was safe with this company even though I had a bit of fear. I waited several hours hoping things would load and let me into the app to see what would happen with all my different subscriptions. I wondered how the app would work and if I’d have to join a subscription to be able to see my other subscriptions, but the app never did work for me. It had my bank card but it needed a checking account also I guess. …. I deleted my account and changed my bank card sign in. I wanted to leave this review that way people without checking accounts won’t have to waste their time. I’m sure it’s a great app for people with checking accounts. ….

  • Impressive

Was looking for a Mint replacement. Tried Monarch, Copilot, YNAB, Quicken Simplify, and Rocket. Simplify had an impressive feature set, but the design was really substandard - it was hard to parse the information presented, so it felt meaningless and not actionable. Rocket stood out for showing really helpful cuts of my financial data (biggest expenditures, most frequented businesses, income vs. spend, assets vs. liabilities, etc) but also did so in a beautiful, easy to read and understand way. The UI is near flawless - if any designers who worked on this product are reading this, I applaud you. I didn’t expect much from the bill negotiation feature, but tried it and to my surprise, they successfully shaved 30% off one of my subscriptions.

The one downside seems to be that I’m seeing lots of duplicate transactions when I scroll back through some historical data the app imported. I spent a lot of time cleaning them up manually in order to have a decent approximation of my spend patterns over time. I hope this doesn’t begin to happen with the current data in a few months.

Overall, very pleased with this app, and the web version is just as great. Highly recommend you give this a shot.
