Game has 5 star potential but terrible AI

I originally gave this game 4 stars, but after playing more I’ve found the AI to be a complete hinderance to just enjoying the game. The computer knows INSTANTLY where your units are going and how many are being sent, this is evident because it will not send a single unit if it knows I haven’t sent enough to take the point. The moment the number of infantry I send exceeds the amount holding a point, it will send reinforcements. It’s infuriating, because this creates multiple loops during gameplay that are completely unenjoyable to manage. I need to send a small fake squad from a point to bait the computer, then once it’s answered with reinforcements, I need to change the focus of attack to another point, the computer will compensate, then I must pivot again, and again, and again. I’ve literally gotten the game stuck in a loop where they wont stop sending every single unit that spawns - only because it knows the numbers are in it’s favor. I clicked and sent every unit for about 2-3min until it had finally widdled down my numbers. It’s possible to have fun playing on expert because all you’re doing is basically memorizing what decisions the computer makes and exploiting that knowledge.

Please fix your game, it’s not fun to play when the deck is so wildly stacked against you. If I can’t see the total number of units the AI has on a point, then it shouldn’t be able to see mine either.

Response to the Developer

Just wanted to update the review after having been sent a stock reply from the developer. To any prospective players who may read this, make no mistake, this game most certainly has pervasive pay to win mechanics. It would take an absolutely inordinate amount of time for a free to play user to reach a level where they could compete with players who pay real currency into the game. In many cases players can spend real life currency to purchase items that boost their characters ability that are not available to players who don’t wish to spend money on the game. Having to spend money to compete on a level playing field isn’t enjoyable, especially in a game that already utilizes a reward system that requires players to view advertisements in order to receive rewards. This is not a game where real currency only buys cosmetic items. Real currency will provide the player with a very real advantage against those who don’t. If you want to perpetuate this type of monetization system then grab the credit card, because there are plenty of opportunities to spend here.

Core game fun, app buggy & too many ads

The core game, actually playing the rounds, is fun. It has been every since the PS3 version 10 years ago. This app implementation is buggy, and full of forced ways to try to sell you stuff you don’t need. There are often 3 pop up ads for sales, chests, gems etc when you open the app. These pop ups appear frequently when you go back to the main menu screen. It is incredibly annoying. Plus, the developers actually have a pack saying you need to buy Premium to have a fun experience. I wish this game removed almost all the chests and boost and freemium nonsense. Offered map packs to buy or other meaningful content instead. I cannot in good conscious recommend this game, even though the core gameplay is actually good. Developers, please stop so blatantly trying to get players to keep spending money. Focus on the game itself.

This game is awesome

I love this game. I’ve been playing for a very long time and I have to say that no other phone game I’ve played has been so mentally stimulating and fun. The Game is structured In such a way that there are improvements to be made for long term players. It’s not like most other games when you get to max level super fast and get bored. This game in all its glory has one major flaw, which is why I’m putting four stars instead of 5. It is very much a pay to win type game. You can purchase abilities and artifacts very easily, and the artifacts can provide very large advantages. If you’re a veteran It’s fine because you’ve probably acquired some artifacts on your own, but people who are just starting out and buy over powered artifacts, can make it frustrating for players just getting started. This pay to win system creates lots of early game power imbalances and can discourage people from playing. I love this game, but you’re gonna have to get used to running into a level 5 player with legendary Artifacts every once in awhile.

Avoid

Game only tells you after completing the tutorial and a couple of missions that you have to pay to play the campaign. It’s predatory, and I uninstalled immediately after finding out.

Response from developer

Hello! We understand that you may be reluctant to pay for single player campaign in the game, but you can always play multiplayer mode for free.

Terrible multiplayer matchup

I played the game a few years ago and left because of multiplayer matchups. I’ve played over 2k matches this time around and less than 30 have been where I have a better shield than my opponent. The shield is what gives your characters all around upgrades. Our trophies are usually different by 50 points but don’t do anything to give any advantage and our player levels are also different. Sometimes by 10. My win rate is less than 40%. Not because all are better (some of my best competitors were less shield than me and destroyed me) but because they have a clear advantage. Many times my opponents are 1 or more shields better and have no special artifacts attached yet still increase their population growth and speed. Just trash. Game is really cool. The single player is fun. But the idiots that designed the matchup algorithm must have worked for MS Bing.

An honest review

The game is Ight but the maths sometimes doesn’t work. Idk if it’s some kinda bug or what but the simple subtraction of 30 - 37 somehow has a remainder. The game would be really nice if they made the morale system more accurate on how it effects your units and put values to show how much morale you gain from each move you successfully complete. Honestly it’s an okay game, it’s just that the morale system makes it so your playing more on luck than on skill. Another feature that is annoying is the AI you have to vs after you lose an online match, though it may seem like a good idea to some, it really aggravates me when I can’t pick up immediately but instead have to play change pace to a somewhat obvious AI. Something like that destroys my will to play the game any longer and prevents me from o twining any satisfaction.
Another issue is the crazy amount of money that you need to pay, I find it absolutely criminal to make players pay for the campaign. And some characters are ridiculous in price, £45 for a single character!? Absolute atrocious. Yes their are offers on them every so often but who’s going to pay that for a character that can only use online, how am I supposed to practice?
If the game was more skill than chance I would have loved it, but there’s so many factors that make it annoying to play that there is a very low chance of me ever coming back.

Broken by choice

Fair warning now!!! This game has long since been a fair competition game. It has progressed far past the pay to win scheme in games. This fact is advertised in game with their slogan “Want to dominate? Then buy premium” giving you unlimited skills to use against your enemies. The unbalanced skills that people can openly purchase with money, the upgrades that require exorbitant amounts of in game coins to purchase and the newly added “relics” which give your character yet another boost like damage increase. This game has shamelessly given people who open their wallets the 10 steps they need to get ahead. And I regretfully and loathe that I purchased the campaign on this game. I will never buy a game by this developer again. I’ll only rate this five stars so more people see this. If you want a balanced game don’t play this game. I worked my way up the ranks only to be shot down with this new addition meaning no matter how good I can play your premium opponent can spam their characters skills and “dominate”. Severely disappointed by this game

Hello! The in-game purchases are totally optional and you can upgrade your abilities and unlock new heroes without paying money though it may take up some time.

Way too unbalanced

The game is fun most of the time IF you get matched with someone around the same level as you. If you get matched with a paid player or someone thats been in the game for a long time with almost everything upgraded, its a completely one sided game. And that happens A LOT. I am fine with paid players/old players getting an advantage, but the game matching should match you with people of your level most of the time, not make sure you have no chance before the game starts 75% of the time. Takes the fun completely out of the game when you keep playing against maxed out people fixe times in a row. Besides that everyone once in a while their servers lags to no end. One minute everythings quiet, next second you lost half of your villages. All in all, great game if you are matched evenly. Too bad thats a rarity in the game.

Good game ruined by greed and terrible updates

The game itself is great, but the recent update has made it terribly glitchy. Constantly crashing, often mid-game, resulting in a recorded loss which is totally unacceptable in a paid event. Add to this the increasingly predatory nature of overpriced in-game purchases, such as deliberately lagged pop-ups that have the ‘buy’ button over the top of the ‘start game’ button, resulting in inadvertently hitting ‘buy’ all the time. It just feels more and more scummy and greed-driven. Such a shame. Honestly, don’t waste your time or money.
