  • Keep updating please! Absolutely the Best

July 2024: just want to start updating this review regularly to encourage continued support. App works great and no problem. Just don’t want it to be abandoned someday. Every once in a while I try another app, but always come back here. It’s simple, customizable, and solid.

This is, by far, my favorite gym app. Design is beautiful, easy to read, add exercises, workouts, etc. I’ve been using it for years and hope the dev continues to keep the app updated.

  • Best workout app with one flaw

This app is amazing for tracking my workouts. It has everything you need and is very user friendly. My only issue with the app is the timer. I noticed when I switch apps the timer does not continue. So the only way to have the timer going is to stay on the app which is disappointing. Especially when I have a 3 minute rest period and I can’t switch apps during that time to keep my rest period consistent. I just ended up using the iPhone timer instead.

  • Best workout app for me

The generously sized controls and clear UI are great for using in a gym. Exporting workout data, backup, and importing programs via copy/paste from a text file is genius. Surprisingly deep feature set from a product maestro and who is also obviously a lifter. I’ve tried other apps but always come back to Heavyset.

Heavyset is easy enough to use straight out of the tin, but it would be great if there were a place the community could make the programs they’ve added for others to use.

    Developer Response

HeavySet only uses a local database. It makes no difference if you have an internet connection or not.
  • Brilliant App - certain features could use some love to make it feature complete though

I have been using HeavySet for a few years and overall I’m pretty happy with how it works - it has a intuitive UI, and makes things simple to use.

I would suggest adding certain features to enable periodization management in the app though. Something as simple as the ability to increase working weight by 2% every week would go a long way to increase the utility of this app. It recommends weights naively based on the last workout, or you can tell it to suggest higher weights using the “deload” feature but that adds some friction in using this.

  • Trial period is too short to learn about features

I wanted to fully test out the app before I committed to purchasing the premium upgrade, so I added exercises and created a new routine that included them all. I then ran through the routine to see how I would log all my activities at the gym. Once I felt comfortable, I took it to the gym to try it for real… it locked me out of the routine of 15 exercises and said I needed to upgrade to use the routine. I spent over an hour getting the app all set up in order to try it out, and it wouldn’t let me. The trial period should last at least seven days so that you can see how it all works. I have given up on this app and will look for another. Too bad.

  • Almost there

I like the app overall. I think it does a better job of tracking long-term progress visually than the Strong app.

However, I would like an update to remove the time limit while the app runs. During a set, the screen locks. There is an option to remove this during the timer but not during a set. It is not convenient to unlock the screen every time I am doing a new set.

  • Phenomenal

I’ve never left an app review in my 10 years as an iPhone user, but this app is too good not to praise the developer. It has the key features that I’ve always hoped for that other apps just don’t have. Namely, lifetime progress tracking displayed via graphs with the ability to view trends on volume, estimated 1 rep max, max weight. Workout interface is beautifully crafted, the timer is a game changer for accurately measuring rest periods, and it all just works in a simple and intuitive manner. A++++

  • Best app for tracking progress

I have tested probably 5-8 similar apps and this one is by far the best. Every app will take a couple days to get used to but this one is worth it. I personally use this app to track my weight lifting progress but it could be used for many other workout types.

On the surface it’s extremely simple but behind the scenes there is a ton of personalizations you can make to tailor the app and tracking metrics to you. Use those features or don’t, the app is great either way- and that’s what I like.

My favorite feature is being able to quickly access my previous workout or exercise to know how much I need to progress today. Tracking and viewing history is seriously so easy. Not to mention in app plate calculators and timers just a click away. I couldn’t recommend this app enough.

  • Much Worse

Been using this app for years. Before the latest update it was miles ahead of every other app on the market. Now it’s average.

All sorts of bugs and even some removed features. I can no longer add notes to a workout (why??), and when I add notes to a specific set it just bugs and doesn’t display the whole note. Also, there’s some really weird bugs with the in built timer that is quite annoying. Anything over 2 minutes doesn’t work properly and messes up my music.

Still a decent app, but went from 4.5 stars down to 3.

  • Not many updates

Would love to see some updates to graphs, personal records, and the ability to use the Apple Watch. I’m glad I have a home gym as I probably wouldn’t use the app if I was at a gym pulling my phone out. I have tried other apps but they all are too much or too expensive. This is simple and easy to use, just lacks several features I wish were available. Overall, I really like it and have a lifetime subscription (I hate the other apps due to everything being a monthly price). I recommend the app to anyone who already is intermediate to advanced. I don’t think it is meant for beginners.
