  • Amazing

This app is great. It allows for such fine control over black and white photos, and the interface is super cool and easy to use.
  • My fav photography app rn

This app has a bit of a learning curve, but once you get the hang of it you will fall in love. You have a lot of control over how you want the picture to look like, including the ISO and what film you want to use (basically how you want the colors too look like).
  • I love it this app

You can make old black & white film via this app
  • Comprehensive. Different.

I started my photographic life back in the days of film and darkrooms. Hours spent in a red safelight gloom, the familiar smells of developer and vinegary stop bath filling the air... Each shot hard-won and satisfyingly crafted.

So trying to recreate some of that magic on an iPhone seems like a great idea.

The app certainly offers lots of control over your photos: different contrast, dodging, burning etc. The paid version offers different films, and tones. However I found the interface a bit confusing and overly fiddly at times. What are layers?

The cameras are a nice touch for high levels of control. I don’t know how often I’d use them but they’re a nice addition to the paid version.

Somehow I came away feeling that you’re never going to recreate a darkroom without being a bit gimmicky. The darkroom really just lets you control contrast and exposure, which you could do with sliders. Perhaps better to just offer great B&W editing controls (there aren’t really any great B&W iPhone apps out there right now), and focus less on the darkroom aspect?

Anyway, overall worth getting. And great to see interest in thoughtful film and darkroom processing continuing in an age of instant gratification and snapping shots of everything and anything.

  • Not great

I’m not really liking this app. The viewfinder seems to give a very inaccurate portrayal of the exposure. It always looks way darker than what you end up with, even if you choose the darkest option on the test strip. In darkroom mode the dodge and burn sliders don’t appear to do anything at all.

Maybe you have already deleted Darkr, but I urge you to look at the tutorials. The sliders are only there for to change the pen-size when you draw the mask. I really understand that Darkr can be tough to use since a real darkroom is very hard to work with. And I try to simulate a real darkroom as close as it can be. To master a real darkroom usually takes years and in the digital world we are not used to work hard for the result :) Anyway, thanks for your honest review
  • Very surreal

as I use this app couple of times, I felt like to use almost similar analogue camera. I wonder if there can be more thorough instruction and tips for photography with this app. Not that there isn’t any. But, I think that will be very helpful for long term

Thanks for your review and asking for more tips and tricks. I think that I can add more in the future. You can always help me by contacting me through Darkr so we can chat some about what you want to learn. I have been using both analog cameras and darkroom for over 20 years, so I think I know how I can help you :) But I need to know what to instruct you with. / Marcus - the developer
  • What a fab little App!

This App emulates the days of film and darkroom processes for those like me who spent years learning the craft of photography using film. The ability to shoot using different types of cameras with old familiar film brands and colour filters is very refreshing and great fun. I’m still playing with it but for £2.99 it’s a great new toy to dabble with. 😊

I'm happy you like it. And as you I have also spent several hours / weeks in my darkroom. I actually created this app to let others try out the feeling we miss so much. But still it's very joyful for us to get back in our time as well :)
  • Fascinating

A great way to step through the processes of film development.

A very absorbing use of time as there is something tangible at the end.
  • It’s ok

Not a bad app. Sometimes would have problems with burn/dodge feature with more detailed “negatives.” Other than that and not being able to save progress for later, it’s pretty ok.
  • LOVE

I’ve wanted an app like this for a very long time. I stumbled upon this browsing the App Store and downloaded it instantly. It takes some getting use to but it’s worth trying. I really appreciate the tutorials. It has been a long time since I’ve been in a darkroom.
For me, using Darkr is like traveling back in time to what helped me fall in love with photography, the darkroom. Thank you for this. I can’t wait to see what it develops into. Just don’t go away! lol

Thanks for your honest review. I can assure you that you don't have to be afraid that I will stop developing the app. I have used lots of various analog cameras and darkroom for over twenty years. And I just love the whole analog part and want to show the rest of the world how it works. So, I can assure you that I will not stop developing Darkr :)
