Broken and sub par

At the time of writing this review, the app currently crashes on load. I’m not sure if some of the issues below have been fixed, as I can’t access the content I pay a subscription on.

Firstly the SM codex (I haven’t got the Necron one yet)

- The new SM codex datasheets don’t have weapon profiles for their standard loadout, just the optional weapons you may take.
- Some sections are purely sorted alphabetical with no filter. So psychics powers of multiple disciplines are mixed together with no indicator to which is which. And datasheets cannot be filtered by battle role.
- stratagems do not mention their target restrictions

The rest of the app
- No army builder yet. In the interim being able to favourite datasheets, stratagems and powers for easy recall like in the citadel colour app would have been good (and still is as an addition)
- For a game that revolves around keywords, it’s surprising how little this feature is used by the app. (Tapping the keyword in a stratagem or ability description could show you all the relevant targets)
- The mission packs are unavailable, even with the subscription.
- A score / cp tracker would be perfect on an app like this and give it a bit more utility to excuse the price.
- There no option to buy the codex in app form only. Obviously with all the broken content that isn’t viable now, but having an environmentally friendly option again would be nice (there’s no digital edition on the website this time round)

Just a money spinner

This app gives you nothing.
The code in the CODEX gives you nothing.
If you want to be able to use it, you have to pay again, every month, I.e. subscribe, to be able to read something you have already bought. A complete rip off from the masters of rip off.

Non functional

When I first got it I enjoyed using its features, basic as they were. Now the app literally doesn’t function on iOS 14, and hasn’t been fixed yet they still charge for a subscription? Disgusting.

Just OK when it works.

It’s a handy enough app to quickly look up data sheets in a pinch, but it’s a long way away from being useful at the game table. While a list builder is still a ways off, it’d be useful at the very least to be able to sort things by faction (stratagems are still spread out over several books), datasheets by role and favorite certain things as scrolling through alphabetical lists is just silly.

And that’s all when the app works, which it currently does not do since the release of iOS14. It seems like the app cannot register any clicks other than on the bottom navigation, which bars you from opening codexes or datasheets.

Between that glitch and the general lack of usability, it seems like the team isn’t actively using the app themselves. The last update was a month ago. There are better, more coherent collections of information out there and better, usable list builders.

I wish I could support GW in moving to the digital space—I’d love to have a consolidated place for codexes and inevitable updates—but it’s impossible to recommend anyone pay for this right now.

Just stopped working...

UPDATE:

A week since posting and no update or feedback from the developers. And I’m not the only one struggling. As of this moment I am cancelling my subscription (with much sadness as I hoped for so much more).
I really hope that GW can turn this one around as I had had such high hopes.
I am sorely disappointed.

ORIGINAL:

Worked great for a couple of weeks and I was coming round to the idea of using the app instead of the printed codex / rules book. But a couple of days ago the app stopped working. It still opens and I can still search for things, but if I try tapping on a search result to open it, or if I try na I hating to one of the rule books / codex - NOTHING.
The app is basically a glorified bookmark, in a book where all the pages are super glued shut.
I’ve given the devs the benefit of the doubt and waited a couple of days in case it was a server issue, but no joy.
App is useless and if I relied on this alone for my rules then I would have missed a few games.
Very frustrating - especially as I am being asked to pay monthly for something that doesn’t work. Free app might be forgivable, but paid app - I’d expect much more...
GW - please can we get a response / update on this, or consider it one less subscriber for next month...
Thanks.

App usage

I have been using it since it was put online. It has worked fine or rather well enough (hence the 3 star rating), until I updated my iPhones OS to IOS14. Now I can open the app, but I cannot access anything. Very frustrating! Hopefully GW resolve this issue quickly as it is most annoying.

So many issues

So many problems with this app.

Tldr; app feels rushed - like it was created by an amateur developer who did no user research. If you navigate multiple books for your army, stay clear.

1. New update for IOS 14 broke the alp and cant click on anything
2. Built for iphone, not Ipad, so you basically have to enlarge and dont get to see any more content on larger screen.
3. Navigation is by book instead of army type. Its like they did 0 user research on how their audience would actually use and app. Folks complain about having to navigate multiple books for an army, still go back and forth between books and entries in the app. Horrible user experience. At least with multiple physical books you can have the, both open to different entries. Here you constantly go back and forth.
4. No way to report issues..feels like they dont care to improve
5. UI problem again - doesnt have ability to orient screen. So not only no wide screen view, but you cant even use it upside down if you are plugged in and way to have cable at the top of your phone

App broke in iOS 14

Already not sure why I’m paying $4.99 a month for an app that doesn’t have a list builder. But I do like the idea of having data sheets auto updated with point changes and when errata come out. However with the launch of iOS 14 nothing in the main screen is selectable. You can change categories on bottom of screen and use search function but can’t select data sheets.... I really want GW to be able to pull this one out but it’s off to such a rocky start I’m not sure if it’s going to replace BattleScribe on my iPhone/iPad. Please get us an iOS 14 compatibility update! And PLEASE give us ANY update on Battle Forge! The main reason anyone is willing to pay for this!

App needs a lot of work

This app was hyped up to be the best thing ever, the starting offer of getting all the codex’s and books for those who subbed in the first month was amazing! We’d get our army builder soon too right?

The app was working up until IOS14 and since then I’ve been unable to select anything in the lists I scroll, I can see everything but when I tap on anything it doesn’t even register in the app that I have tapped the screen, this also happens when I search and I try to tap on one of the search results.

I’m also annoyed that an integral thing that made me want to pay for a subscription was the army builder, and that’s not even available yet! No communication about when it will be ready is available either.

I love the idea of this app but it’s buggy as heck and is taking a while to deliver on its selling points.

This App is better than the GW Haters

5$ a month for All the books in one easy to use digital application, That’s great value. Compare to buying all the books, that’s Hundreds of Dollars and lots to slog around just for a few quick references and opposition research. The App is clearly superior here.

A lot of people mention BattleScribe, but BattleScribe doesn’t contain the stratagems, while the app does, along with a lot of other useful peripheral rules to the game.

Lastly is all the nerd neck scrubs who have a perpetual irrational hatred for GW. Many didn’t even buy the Subscription but gave a poor review. Many said the subscription service wasn’t working, it works fine. These inane critics just didn’t update their apps, and instead of taking personal responsibility decided to blame GW. Then there’s the unwillingness to support the community, they don’t want to support the app financially to help it grow and improve. They also don’t want to support it with honest reviews and instead focus on downvoting it to validate their own insane biases. Which can detract newcomers to the hobby from getting a useful product. But the best part is when you download the app and buy the subscription these rejects Aren’t Included. 5 Stars!
