Word of warning to lenders
I had the unfortunate experience of someone stealing my identity to open up an account with Fat Llama and then steal some poor guy’s camera in my name.
Hadn’t even heard of the company until they messaged me on social media accusing me of stealing. Then they proceeded to threaten me over emails and phone calls to pay thousands of pounds or suffer consequences. Was absolutely harrowing to go through and they were less than sympathetic to my situation, repeatedly telling me that “it doesn’t matter, it’s in your name and you’re liable to pay” despite what the police and Action Fraud advised me on.
If you do decide to use them, make sure you 100% know who you’re lending to and establish controls to ensure your product isn’t stolen (such as going to the borrowers home to lend the item, or requiring their ID when you meet, for example).

So far so good
Always a bit anxious with some rentals but have met some brilliant film makers in similar situations to myself through the app and I’ve been able to afford kit that I wouldn’t necessarily have access to. Spent a lot of time messaging some users about a rental but then they haven’t been approved in time, which is frustrating. But I believe it could be their own fault for not getting approved sooner and submitting the required docs rather than fat llama not being quick enough to review them. Currently happy with the level of security needed for people to rent so no complaints there, yet :)

Buyer stole my drone for rent!!
A buyer stole my drone that I posted for rent. I followed all the protocol and they made my insurance company pay for the replacement which is a negative on my claims! Stupid.

Last time I used them I was still charged for an order that didn’t actually happen which was worth several hundred pounds, when I tried to get help from the team there was a general feeling that I was trying to get out of paying and they were pretty rude.
If you want to want to do anything other than play with a 5d or a drone for a few hours in a completely unprofessional situation with no time sensitivity then give them a go. If you want to do anything else at all I would avoid.

Such a great way to rent anything you need
Very concerning bug
There’s a very strange bug that a recurring lender warned me about. When he went into the app he found out that it somehow logged him into my account, which should be impossible if you don’t have the login details. I hope the team gets to the bottom of this.
Great idea, needs a bit of work
I really love the idea of this and have hired kit out a few times, but it is very inflexible and sometimes very annoying and time consuming to use.
I believe a lot of this is being addressed so will stick around to see the improvements, however the 15% fee charged to both parties is extortionate, especially when things don’t work very well. It’s much too big a fee. 15% split between the two parties seems reasonable considering how clunky the process is.

Great service that helps people live more sustainably
If you’re trying to live more sustainably and buy less stuff, then Fatllama is the app you need in your life! Also, great for trying stuff out before committing to buying.
The app is easy to use. I recently had a great experience renting out an electric scooter for a day. Very excited for the launch of the delivery service – I will definitely be using it more now that I can get items dropped off at my door step.

Easy to use
I love being able to arrange my rentals on the go.
Renter here
I rented out my camera and lens a few times. The main issue has been the interface and ability to properly modify rentals. Multiple times the app has made it difficult to modify the rental period with the renter. Sometimes the rental is cancelled for no reason. This app is wasting my time. I deleted my account and started using Sharegrid and Kitsplit instead.
