OmniFocus 3 User Reviews

Finally. Worth the Upgrade.

Been an OF user since v 1, then 2, but left for others (including Things) when OF became convoluted, cluttered, and just plain no fun to use. With OF 3, however, the app is back. Two big improvements for me: tags replace context (it fits my work flow better, more flexible) and improved perspectives (or saved searches). I give it 4 stars rather than 5 because the overall interface is still a little clunky, cluttered, and there are tons of options for drilling down searches (good for some folks, too much for others). Setting up location alerts doesn’t make much sense, but OK. Before I upgraded, I took advantage of the trial: Prove to me this app is actually improved and I will use — and enjoy using. So far so good. The upgrade pricing is fair, too. Not 20 or 25 percent off but a full 50 — 60 is now 30 and much more palatable, considering I’ve spent way too much dinero on OF, Things, and others to find one that I will actually continue to use.

Very nice update to OF2

It feels fresh, and the enhancements (notably to the Forecast panels) are very welcome. Changing “Contexts” to “Tags” was a great decision and has made that incredibly useful now.

The one and only request I’d have is to be able to create task templates whose due dates are relative to the parent. (E.g. drop in a set of tasks where I can set the due date to 3:00pm on [project’s due date] - 2 business days.)

I’m very happy with this update and it’s made its way to truly being my backup brain in personal affairs as well as business now. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 bravo!

Great update to an incredibly useful App

Wow! Finally the upgrade I've been waiting for. While the new tags system is awesome (have been manually tagging tasks for years), the real power feature might be the liberal use of disclosure triangles! Now the clutter can be managed and be as visible as you want it to be. Might one hope for the possibility of having structured text in the Note field in a future release? It would be great to have bullets and checklists. Most tasks require more than one action to carryout. Being able to create checklists within tasks would allow the ability to associate actions with tasks, creating a three-tier hierarchy: projects made up of one or more tasks, each in turn requiring one or more actions to complete.

The Best got Better

Would be so lost without this app - as a busy medical student, this app helps me prioritize my tasks and focus on what matters most amidst an ocean of different demands on my time and attention. Looking forward to using this invaluable tool for years to come. Should also mention that customer support has been timely, kind, and helpful the one time I had a question. If you’re on the fence, just get the app. May take a little learning up-front, but so, so worthwhile.

More than a task manager

Omnifocus is the best task manager that I've personally used, but just calling it a task manager does it a disservice. Omnifocus helps me manage all of the projects (big or small) in my life. It does have a steep learning curve at first, but I encourage those who are discouraged in the beginning to play around with it and find a system that works for you. It took me a bit, but now I couldn't be happier. I've been using it for the past two years and am very pleased with the 3.0 update and additions.

OmniFocus 2 upgrade?!!

So I bought OmniFocus 2 on my old iPhone 6 a long time ago. I use both the Mac and the app. Just got a new iPhone X and noticed that OmniFocus 2 has been removed from the App Store and replaced with a preorder option for OmniFocus 3. I wait a few days without OmniFocus on my new phone. Then I finally get this new version and it tells me I have to pay to upgrade even though I don’t want to. In other words, this is either a bug in the app that wouldn’t transfer OmniFocus 2 accounts to OmniFocus 3 or this is intentional way for them to make more money! If they make a new app version every year and force you to upgrade the real cost of OmniFocus is $59 a year!! Perhaps this is a the “hidden” subscription model for generating revenue. Very shady!!

Almost The Perfect To-Do App

Two week option for Due Soon.

I know every user is different, everyone has their “just one more thing” in their systems. But this is mine. My hill I feel compelled to die on.

After years of building my life around OmniFocus, building up an intolerance for any other To-Do system, this is the one option I miss most. I dream of most. The only hole in my heart that makes me download other to do apps, even though I always come crawling back to the beautiful OmniFocus. Never more beautiful than in version three.

An app that works how I think

I’ve been using OmniFocus since version 1 happily and have always struggled to get the organization to feel natural. Data is multi dimensional. Something may require me to be at home but it may also require someone else to be home. Tags finally introduce this multi faceted approach to data. This version has some getting used to, but the payoff is there. Give it an honest shot, get over the initial “it’s new” hump, and you’ll enjoy it. Great job omnigroup, keep it up!

If I could make one change

Love the new version of OmniFocus! The improvements make a huge difference, especially once you dig into the new settings and make use of the new perspective tools.

If I could make one change, it seems like calendar events are sorted into the task list by end time and I wish there was an option to use start time instead, it just makes more sense for how I think about tasks in relation to my day. Overall that’s a minor qualm, though, and OmniFocus 3 makes life so much easier that that one irritation doesn’t compare to how much better it is over 2.

Gold standard

One of the key tenets of GTD is being able to trust your system. Once a task has been captured, you can relax in the knowledge that it won't be lost; won't be forgotten. OmniFocus on my iPad, iPhone and Mac give me that confidence.

The GTD system is centered around the concepts of Projects and Contexts, which previous versions of OmniFocus supported elegantly. Contexts in particular were a powerful tool, but sometimes frustrating to organize. It was hard to fit every task into a single, meaningful context. The “big idea” with OmniFocus 3 is the change away from context to tag. Tags work exactly like contexts did previously, but you can have many of them on a task instead of one. This is a major game changer. All my tasks were migrated to the new version with no problem, with my former contexts converted to tags. Now I'm rethinking everything about how to use tags in more flexible ways, especially using geofencing tags (like a “Home Depot” tag and a “Lowe's” Tag on tasks to pick up potting soil).

OmniFocus 3 oozes quality and craftsmanship which I've come to expect from the Omni Group. As a loyal customer, I did get it for a discount, but it was an insta-buy anyway. Can't say enough about this great company.
