  • Bad UI on a Great App

Right from the moment you open the app, the Home Screen shows users both a “Help” button and a “?” icon. One opens a horrendous pdf with missing images and the other highlights the question mark button you tapped (along with two others) and explains that it is the help toggle. I know. I just. Tapped it. It’s clear the devs had their hearts in the right place here, but as someone with a background in interface design, the more I use the app the more I wish they would hire someone—anyone—to help them overhaul the interface. The functions of the app are rock-solid (aside from occasional crashing), but the confusing interface and visuals really drag the experience down for me and take away from what could be a purely magical experience.

As a note specifically to the devs: I’m pretty sure this UI is is the single biggest reason for all the one-star reviews. A number of people keep saying the app is a “scam” and that’s because it pretty much looks like junkware. On top of that, despite having help menus, it seems like the way you’re presenting information to users is confusing because 90% of negative reviews are just people complaining because they scanned the music wrong. Both of these issues are rooted in the interface. If you have questions about the areas of the app people are confused by or want to discuss potential solutions, contact me! I use the app a bunch and wouldn’t mind helping out at all!

Thanks for your review. The bubble help is there when you first use the app. Tap the “?” Button to remove. The greyed buttons are because the document is locked. Just tap the padlock. Thanks.
  • Turn off the error correction option!

This could have been a five star app, since it does the job close to perfectly when you have all the settings right.

The “Error Correction” option is absolute garbage. When it was turned on (by default), the app output sheet which make no musical sense, that I was about to ask for a refund. Then I thought I should try turning off the error correction, and everything works properly instantly.

Also the PDF process quality option is confusing. You would imagine you get best result when you have the performance bar maxed, but no. If your input image quality is not very high, scrolling performance to somewhere around the middle actually yield better result.

The error correction helps on most scores and should normally be on. It can often greatly improve accuracy by guessing where information is missing. But like any AI it can sometimes make mistakes, and sorry it did in your score. We would certainly like to see the score if you would be kind enough to send it to support@organumconsulting. Please see help on the PDF control. It is hard to explain in a couple of words but once you understand it it can be very useful. Many thanks PlayScore.
  • Like a charm

  • Not useful

Kept crashing when I tried to import a PDF. When I tried another and imported it as a MusicXML file into a music notation app, it create a huge mess. Quicker to notate myself.

    Developer Response

This is not usual. Suggest you restart your device. Accuracy is high with high resolution input. We find problems are usually something simple. Always pleased to help at support@organumconsulting.com
  • Deceitful

    OK this advertised as FREE.

    It isn’t free at all.

You have to buy a subscription to use the software.

You can’t even use try and buy ie one score.

Are there any controls included to stop the copying of music that is not in the public domain.

You should be upfront with the costs as I might have considered this. As there was no information about cost in the blurb that is deceitful and deceptive. That makes me think should I be doing business with this individual or company. How safe are the scans ie one to me and one to the company?

The only indication that you had to buy a licence was BUY in the left hand corner. Even the 6 scores in the library can’t be used because they are locked by the software.

Sorry I had to delete in the end.

PlayScore 2 is advertised as free with in-app subscriptions. Without a subscription You can scan and play any page of music with 1 or 2 staves per system. You can play all the samples and any other PlayScore document. This is clearly stated in the app description, and on the first page you see in the app. It is also prominent on our site. We receive/keep no data from you of any kind and show no ads. We don’t see how we could be more transparent! Thanks support@organumconsulting.com
  • Amazing App

This is an amazing app. I’m no professional musician and recently joined our church choir. They sing (in 5-part harmony) music I am unfamiliar with. Downloaded the PlayScore app and scanned 20 pages of music. Through the apps very user friendly tools I was able to isolate my (bass) part which allowed me to learn it after playing it back a few times. I did have some questions, emailed the app support team and received answers that same day. Customer support is the best I’ve encountered in a long time. Sent the app to our choir directly. After she tried it she encouraged every one in the choir to download and use it. She described it as an invaluable tool. At just over $5 a month it’s something every one can afford. Other music scanning apps cost from $150 to over $500 and are geared for professional musicians. User friendly they are not. Can’t recommend this app enough.

Thanks! One subscription should cover your whole choir. If one person scans the music and prepares one document each for S, A, T and B, those documents can be emailed and played by the other people in the choir using PlayScore 2 without a subscription.
  • This app does not work for exporting Music XML

It doesn’t matter what I upload, a very high quality JPG, or PDF, or Scan, this app cannot read them. Even with troubleshooting and doing all the steps put forth, the most I get out of 5 page, or even 1 page of composition may get me 2-5 notes played that seem to be chosen at random spacing.

Don’t make the mistake that I did, and use the examples as proof that this is going to work for you specifically. Now I am out $22 and can’t seem to get a refund. I’ll be keeping this review up until I do.
Do not purchase for MusicXML exporting.

  • NOT A REPLACEMENT FOR A GREAT PIANO TEACHER

hahaha you will still need virtuoso pianists if you want to hear sheet music played ‘correctly’, if at all. Which this app was not able to accomplish in its entirety. The 4-stars is because I like the concept, but they have a very long ways to go before I will not be able to stump it with the Rachmaninoff Liszt Mozart Bach and Chopin books lying around the general vicinity of my pianoforte. IF YOU want people to pay money to upgrade to play 2 staves at once like concerto accompaniments... you might want to get your app performing ONE staff correctly... firstly. Same advice I give to my..... oh dear... piano students :\ NOT A PIANO TEACHER REPLACEMENT :) Stick with ME long enough, and I will have you humming every note on ANY page you wish to hear using no electricity or apps ON PITCH, any staff ;)

  • With this improvement the app would be 5 star (for me, anyway)

It would be helpful to have a better way to organize scores. Even a list view of the titles, rather than the icons would be easier to browse. Folders would be useful, too.

Otherwise, I love this app and find it very helpful for me when working on timing and for isolating difficult parts to play on repeat.

Thank you for your consideration this matter.
