The best skin cancer app out there

This app is fantastic for quick skin checks as well access to dermatologists. If you can't get an appointment fast where you are, this is a god send.

Great app minus the extra review/ripoff

Paid 27 dollars to be told I should get opinion from dermatologist

Professional and timely advice!

I cannot say how much I appreciate that this app exists! It is an easy to use app, that provides free and fast analysis of worrisome moles using an mole assessment algorithm. Then, if you wish for further assessment beyond this, for a small (and extremely reasonable fee), you can submit your mole photo for a Dermatologist to assess. It took less then 24 hrs to get a qualified medical opinion with a helpful opinion and advice. MUCH faster then waiting to see a Dermatologist and much more affordable too! Highly recommend

very quick and professional

Using the app I photographed a mole that I was concerned about. Within two hours a diagnosis had been sent to my email which I can now use to alert my GP. General practice appointments are more and more difficult to obtain, this service @ £15 enables me to now explain fully what the situation is, and has given me reassurance and confidence to move forward.

Helped save my life

Scanoma labeled my lesion 83% concerning. I paid the $20 to have their dermatologist confirm. They got back to me overnight confirming it was indeed concerning and to get it biopsied with sufficient margins. The dermatologist I saw in person wasn’t aware of Scanoma and said he wouldn’t trust an app and that I should be more worried about another lesion I had. He therefore biopsied both but only the one Scanoma predicted concerning came out a malignant melanoma stage 0. To be fair, I didn’t use Scanoma to scan the other one, but still, the app held its own! I caught the cancer in time, so it’s no exaggeration to say the app helped save my life. I’ve also used the app’s predictions as evidence to push for getting the best post-diagnosis care possible. PSA: Please search for IMPACT Melanoma for more information on what to do if you’re ever in my situation and never continue with a general/cosmetic dermatologist if you get diagnosed with any type or stage of Melanoma. Foundations such as the American Cancer Society, National Skin Foundation, Aim at the Melanoma, and IMPACT melanoma, all recommend seeing a melanoma specialist after a melanoma diagnosis because it is critically important.

Pretty cool

I like that I’m able to check moles on the go, since taking an appointment with a dermatologist takes forever.

Response from developer

Thank you for your review! Our dermatologist are always available online and provide excellent and prompt responses!

Different results each time

I took several photos of the same mole and the results changed each time, twice it said it was concerning (89% & 78%), then inconclusive, then many times it say between 70-98% not concerning. It’s very confusing and inconsistent in the report.

Found two cancers

I used this app for a small concern on my face. I wasn’t sure what to expect but after a few different pictures it always came back as concerning. I still wasn’t sure but it was enough for me to go see the doctor. When they looked they were concerned that it was as well. Test showed two different cancers. Thank you for the app as I may have never gone to get checked.

Rubbish!

Can't even scan a photo to submit. No instructions, just a silly cartoon type image that blocks the camera!

Response from developer

You have to tap the x on the top right of the instructions window. That’s how you close the instructions box and proceed. Also feel free to contact us at support@scanoma.com if you need any assistance.

From a patient with experience, this seems good

I wanted to leave a review, because I believe I have some standing to give this apps accuracy an evaluation. I’m someone who has spent plenty of time at the derms office, including many biopsy’s, and have a pretty good idea of what a bad mole vs a good mole looks like, especially with regard to my own body. I have my entire body looked at by my dermatologist every year, so I have several moles that work good as a control. While they have not been removed, my dermatologist always gives them a look because they fit some criteria. All of these “control” moles were correctly flagged as concerning by the app, including a large birthmark made up of a cluster of moles that will make any dermatologist gasp until I inform them it’s a birth mark and has not changed. The app identified it at 7x% concerning. On moles that have been looked at by my derm and I know they are completely normal, the app reliably flags them as 80-90% not concerning.

I currently have a mole that is a bit different than my others on the back of my leg. Not sure if it is an issue, but I thought I would see what the app thought before I call my derm for an appointment. The app identified it as about 90% not concerning even with several clear pictures. I will likely still see my derm about it because it is not like most of my other moles, so that will be an interesting follow up to see what the derms evaluation is. It’s nice to have some feeling it is likely nothing though.

Since I already have a derm I am comfortable with and see frequently, I won’t use the built in service with this app, but for someone without a history like mine, and just wants a doctors advice I think this is a great option for the peace of mind.
