  • Great translations, broken UI.

This app has fantastic potential, and its translations are accurate and natural. The interface looks like it would be good, but once you try to use it you find that it’s shockingly broken. This isn’t normal from Apple, and it’s frankly a little surprising that this thing was even released in its current state. (My theory is that we’re seeing the result of 2+ years of WFH culture.)

The main two issues: it’s difficult and confusing to switch languages and to make that setting “stick”. And more importantly, the “Go” button often does nothing except close the sheet into which you were typing. This button is the most important UI element in the whole app, and more often than not it just plain doesn’t work.

I’m sure the app will be fixed in time, but it should never have been released as it is now.
  • Why is the best and the worst

This app works perfectly for me and it helps me with translating to the most common languages, but I would suggest more language options as well. That’s why it’s good, but why bad??:
My sister has the same type of iPad with the same updates as I have, except the app doesn’t work for her and it works for me. She types in the text and pushes go, but the text disappears. The mic doesn’t work either. Developers, please help!!!
  • You guys need to try to put effort into this!

All you people that are getting this app. Good for you just don’t delete it as soon as it resets or something like that. At least try to figure the problem out because this app can actually help you learn, talk, and so many things that might help you later on in life. So please give this app a 5 ⭐️. Thank you guys for putting this together I actually got to understand my friend that speaks Spanish for the first time it was so cool!!!!✌🏾👍🏾🤟🏾
  • Frustrating User Interface

The most simplistic part of this app is the ability to change languages to start a conversation. After that, everything becomes a chore:
    - Every feature requires two or three additional taps or interface selections, which often makes the experience confusing and leaves the user wondering what to do next.
    - App will often take an extended time to populate a translation, with no interface indication about the progress of the command that has been given.
    - Voice-to-text feature often will not populate a translation, and incorrectly continuing after ending voice option will erase what has been typed.
    - Selecting the text field to edit what has been written via voice-to-text, will often delete what has been written.
  • Really Apple?

I have been using Apple products and services for years. iPhone, iPad, Mac, all of it. And I’ve invested thousands of dollars in their products, and have always been satisfied. But this app is the worst app I’ve ever tried to use. What happened to “it just works”? This app literally does nothing. When I hit “tap to speak” nothing happens, I when I type English in to have in translated to Japanese, it just does nothing. What quack thought it was a good idea to publish this app in its current state? I’ve had the same issue on my iPhone 12 mini and my iPhone XR, on several versions (including the newest release) of iOS 15.
  • Nah

I am using this for French, in conjunction with other apps and materials, and it does a pretty decent job of translating things well. Those are the good things. The bad things are…it’s not user friendly at all. If you’re working on something and have to get out of the app for more than about 5 mins, everything just disappears. There are no options to save anything, other than to add it to favorites, which doesn’t really work as a file. Another annoying thing is how the font jumps from normal size to giganto lettering, flipping the screen horizontally and upside down, without me touching anything but trying to scroll down ro read what I translated. When I tried to get it back to the previous screen, it somehow deleted ALL of the conversations and translations I had “stored” into favorites, and I only hit something that looked like a back-arrow. Super frustrating-I spent more time trying to figure out how the app worked, than doing my lessons. Bottom line: it mostly stinks and I deleted it. Lol
  • Needs settings to turn off auto-detect in apps like Safari

For the use of translating text in apps such as safari, messages, news, etc…
Please add settings to TURN-OFF the “auto detect the original text language” and offer the option to keep the user preferred selected original text language saved, unless user changes it.

    Example scenario:
A page in Safari written in English language, i need to translate few words to a foreign language.
Every time i hold a text to translate, i get either “the language could not be auto detected” or i do get a translation but with unexpected original language like Italian, french, dutch..! Which then i have to reselect the original language to english again and again and again ……
Probably its an auto-detect problem since there are many words similar in letters but different in languages (meanings and pronunciations).

Other than that, the app is not bad and should get better by time and proper updates.

    Thanks you.
  • Aren’t apps supposed to work?

Literally nothing happens when I type in the text to translate and press the “go” button. The text simply disappears from the screen and doesn’t show any sort of translation. It doesn’t even show the original text anymore. It’s like the app resets every time you enter text and press “go.” The text disappears and nothing happens after that. Even trying to press the microphone to speak the translation doesn’t work because the microphone button doesn’t seem to do anything either. It won’t even initiate a recording to translate.

It’s like this is a dud app developed solely to take up space. I followed all the directions and enabled all the permission, and still the app is a dud. Apparently it works for some people but a lot of people can’t get it to work for any language. I’ve deleted and redownloaded the languages, and deleted and redownloaded the app itself, and still it doesn’t work.

It sometimes worked on my old iPhone 7, but has never worked on my iPhone XR. Maybe it only works on the newest iPhone models? As Apple’s way of forcing us to upgrade to the latest line of iPhones. But I’m not doing that. I’ll just go back to iTranslate or Google Translate instead. Those apps may collect data on me but at least they always worked when I needed them to.
  • Late To The Game, Bringing Insufficient Resources

The name of the game for Apple, doesn’t matter if it is with network sharing, network teaming, external storage capabilities, or dozens of other technologies. Apple Inc consistently comes to the table with little to nothing to offer, and when they make their initial appearance, it is wholly insufficient. The handful of languages they bring in the offering of translate are already well covered by a number of more trusted applications. You’d think they’d try to zero in on an audience where they can become invaluable, and become…invaluable. Nope, we’re going to stand over here and be ignored by everyone, while the more main players stay more main, and we gain squat in market share. F-Idiots sit under your command Timothy, scared to be brave, intimidated to be daring. Stick with hardware, your software is losing.
  • better options like google translate or deepl exist

It’s generally pretty good and gives accurate results but there should be a way to forgo having to choose the meaning of the word (e.g. when a word has to different meanings the app should try to use context or just give multiple translations, the whole point of translating sometimes is to find out something you can’t understand.)

    Some smaller problems:
    - The app won’t give me Spanish translations in the tense I need
    - has no image translation making it hard to translate signs in languages like Korean, Thai or Arabic
