  • Great concept, some flaws

This is a great way to learn a language! I wish there was a way to turn off the english subs and just have the language I’m learning on the tv. I find it more distracting than useful to have both subs on the screen.
  • Keeps getting better!

I’ve been using Lingopie since they were only a website, I love that they now have an app and I enjoy and appreciate all of the new features they have added! It is such a fun way to learn and the shows are great! My favorites are Oswaldo, Jamie’s got Tenticles, and the unicorn kitty… I am a grown woman who loves SpongeBob so these shows are right up my alley 😂. Up in the clouds is another one I really enjoyed. There is a lot to choose from, I highly recommend this app to anyone looking to get more practice in the language of their choice.
  • Everything I needed in a language app

I’ve always struggled with keeping motivation to stay persistently with a language learning schedule, but with Lingopie I feel like I’ve hit the jackpot. It’s a wonderful learning resource with reliable subtitles, pop quizzes, and even flash cards to help you memorize new vocabulary with the bonus of learning the correct pronunciation and spelling at the same time. It’s like feel like I’m just using another movie streaming app.
  • Really great app but…

This is a really great app. My favorite part of this app is that I can see the subtitles in the language I’m watching and English, and then I can click on the word and it automatically gets added to flashcards that I can study later. I can see how this would be 5 stars for most languages. However, for Japanese it’s not. When learning to read Japanese, most people start off learning hiragana and katakana before moving on to learning the kanji. As a beginner, I can read hiragana and some katakana but no kanji. This is usually not an issue for me because most language learning tools will put the hiragana above the kanji in small font so you know how to pronounce the kanji. Not having this feature for Japanese defeats the entire purpose of this app. Including kanji should honestly only be reserved for the intermediate and advanced users. Unfortunately, I’ll have to cancel my subscription but maybe I can use this app once I get to that point.

I also took off a star because when I signed up through the app it only have two options $12/month or $67/year so I didn’t get the free 7 day subscription option that I saw on the website. Seems a little shady.
  • The Netflix of language learning

Just started the 7 day free trial and I’m pleasantly surprised how enjoyable it is to learn Spanish with Lingopie.
There’s many great features on the app to choose from. Such as the speed at which the actors are speaking, if your a beginner set it at a slow speed and increase the speed as your comprehension of the language improves, tapping on the words you don’t know and build your vocabulary that saved to review, and a nice variety of shows and movies to choose from.
Also they have excellent customer service that replied to my emails that day or the next morning.
I highly recommend this app which I have already done.
  • Love the concept and content, but app could use some work

This is a fantastic concept. Learning a language is infinitely better whenever it is immersive. When you don’t have access to a lot of native speakers, video and television content is the next best thing. My NUMBER ONE request for the app is to support landscape mode on tablets. The video will play landscape, but the entire app experience is in portrait.
  • Suggestion and bug

Great app and concept, two things: for the “loop” feature I wish you could loop a few times and then move on. Like say loop 3 times then go to the next subtitle.

Also I am experiencing a bug where I am not able to see the definition of a word usually when it’s the last word in the sentence. It adds a flash card but doesn’t show me the definition on click. I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max if that helps.

    Thanks!
  • Good idea, poor execution

I love this idea. However, the exercises are very badly written.

There are several multiple-choice exercises that have the same answer two or three times, but only one is correct.

For example, for the definition of "está," the choices were "you have," "it is," "done," and "it is." How am I to know which "it is" to use? I tapped one and was marked incorrect.

The same thing happened later with "es," only this time THREE of the choices could be correct: "it is," "it is," and "he is" were all among the choices.

Also, the text underneath the challenge word usually doesn't even include the challenge word -- it's just some random phrase from somewhere near that part. So you can't even use contextual hints.

Until these issues are fixed, the only thing this is good for is watching videos. I can find plenty of content online without paying for this app.
  • OK Content, Bad Customer Service

UPDATE: the developers of this app reached out, apologized, and issued a refund. I don’t think customers should have to write a bad review to get a dignified response, but I did want to provide an update and give them credit for ultimately resolving things fairly.

The shows they offer in German are fine but not particularly entertaining - the kind of off-brand stuff you would have rented at the library as a kid, or watched in German class in high school. Worth a 3- or 3.5-star rating. However, the customer service was 1-star. I cancelled after my first month but noticed two months later that they kept charging me. When I inquired, they said there appeared to another account under my name with a typo in my email address. Probably some kind of error on my end, I’ll take full ownership for that. But, given that it was clearly a mistake and the fact that I hadn’t used the service since cancelling, I would expect some kind of offer to refund all or a portion of the accidental charges. I asked kindly for that and was offered nothing. The customer service rep instead referred me to their T’s & C’s and claimed there was no way around it. Long story short: OK product, less than OK customer service from a company that clearly care more about holding onto $24 than they do about making a good impression on their customers.

    Developer Response

Hello EpicV27, we are really sorry to hear about this. Your account has already been refunded, please allow up to 10 business days for the transactions to go through.
  • Potential to be great…

Has a lot of technical glitches. Still overall it is worthwhile and I enjoy it despite technical issues. Sometimes the Spanish CC translation won’t show right away when it is clicked. I lost my flash card library completely once but customer service restored it promptly so that was nice. But at times I click on a show and it loads a different one but after a few retries it all works out but just a pain. No search option is also strange as well as is not being able to categorize by country dialect (from what I have found).
