Session disrupted by upsell window
My therapist pays something like $30/month for the ability to be able to control EMDR sessions over the Internet. I'm using the free App on my Mac to connect to a session controlled by my therapist. I'm using Nintendo Joycon for their vibration feedback.
My session keeps getting interrupted when the controllers stop vibrating. It took me a while to figure out why, but now I know that it happens if I accidentally click a button on one of the diamond pads. When I do, the App pops up a window that is trying to upsell me on a subscription that I have no need for (because my therapist is already paying) and when that happens, it stops driving the controllers.
This app seems well thought through, otherwise, but this thoughtless monetization play severly undermines the value proposition for paying customers and their clients.
App doesn’t work without internet

Thank you for your feedback. We added background playback options in version 1.8.3 and 1.8.4, so you can simply update to enable background playback for active sessions. On a side note, we still have a lot of related functionality planned, so if you’d like to have some input, please get in touch via emdr@appsfortheliving.com. Edit: regarding your updated review - did you perhaps redownload the app, so that it simply needed to revalidate your purchase (for which it requires an internet connection)? If not, let's solve it! Please let us know via emdr@appsfortheliving.com which type of device you're using.
EMDR
Was a 1-time purchase that worked great

We’re glad that you’ve been enjoying the app for years. However, we never disabled any functionality for any user segment. In fact, as an early customer you should have a great deal as you’re getting all previous features plus all EMDR+ subscription features for free. Please get in touch via emdr@appsfortheliving.com regarding what you think is missing. I’m confident we can help you.
Total rip off.

Hi there. I believe there's a misunderstanding both in regards to the price and in regards to the value. With regards to the price - for regular users, the app is just 4,99 per month. The 49,99 per month price is for a professional subscription ("EMDR+ with Connect") that allows therapists to host teletherapy sessions via our own EMDR Connect service - for them, it should be a fair price to pay. I think you missed the regular subscription, so I'll reconsider our subscriptions presentation to prevent this from happening in the future. With regards to the app value, I don't think you mean what you wrote, but I would nonetheless like you to know that this app has been developed full time over multiple years (and still is). This includes constant iteration on the many included features, therapist interviews, professional practice tests and more, to make it an optimal tool for trauma therapists and their clients. The direction of development is also backed by a full theoretical background in psychology (BSc, MSc) and a team of EMDR therapists. I hope this gives you a clearer picture of the cost and value of this app, and I hope you’ll reconsider your evaluation. If you have any more questions or feel like anything is missing, I’d be glad to help. Please reach out to us by mailing to emdr@appsfortheliving.com.
I felt I needed to delete this app - photo security concerns
Response from developer
Thank you for your feedback. If you choose to set an image as wallpaper, the iPhone’s built-in photo library sheet is shown, but the EMDR app is only allowed access to the photo you select from here. The EMDR app purposefully never seeks complete access to your photo and video library, which is why there’s no prompt or privacy setting to (dis)allow full access. Of note, this careful approach is in sharp contrast to most apps on the market. I hope that this clarifies your concern, and hope that you'll reconsider your review. Edit: as of version 2.0.5 (November 15 2023), we've updated the EMDR app's wallpaper picker to make this information more accessible.
