Get this app
If you want to do the Road to Hana on your own, get this app. It was like having your own personal tour guide in your car! It was also informative. I loved the history given at various points. The guide was spot on when giving instructions on parking and what to look for. Well worth the money! Plus it uses GPS so when you lose cell signal, which you will, it continues to follow your progress on the map and doesn’t miss a beat (you must download the app to your phone before leaving). I’ll use Shaka guides for future excursions!

Outstanding companion
We used it for our trip to Maui. The Road to Hana and the drive up Haleakala was so much better for the insight they provided. We also really appreciated the filler music which helped the mood. We ended up with torrential rain during our drive to Hana and the Hawaiian music made it a little better. I do wish they’d add a sunset tour of Haleakala, because our sunrise tour was rained out. Also, you require a reservation for sunrise but not sunset so it might help those who couldn’t get sunrise. You can use the sunrise tour for sunset, but it would be nice to have the hike information on the way up.

Fun and a good value.
We loved this app. Took a full day Oahu loop tour. Found it fun and informative. There a few enhancements I’d like to see. #1 is making this work with Apple CarPlay. CarPlay is now on almost every new vehicle and if your visiting Hawaii, I’m sure you’ll be renting a car with Apple CarPlay. That would remove the need for a car mount. Another enhancement would to have options like if you’re going to go in the water or not. We skipped a few stops since we were not going in the water that day but bookmarked the location to return at a later date. Overall, it’s a great app but make sure leave plenty early if you’re going to make all the stops.

Just do it!
We downloaded the Shaka Road to Hana loop tour for our Maui vacation and it was worth every penny. We wanted to drive ourselves so we could stop where we wanted, spend whatever time we wanted, and skip the things we didn’t want to see. This guide was amazing and helped us find some really unique spots. The guide is knowledgeable and fun and the GPS worked almost to perfection. You won’t regret the purchase. And if you’re nervous about the full Hana loop, don’t be. Our rental Nissan Rogue did it with no problem and the roads are much improved since my husband and I made the drive 12 years ago. It’s a long trip either way, but seeing some of the back Maui countryside with less traffic made the loop worth it for us. The locals understandably drive faster through there, so be on the lookout and pull off to the side to let them pass.

A must-have for your Hawaii vacation
We’ve been using the Big Island bundle for our last two trips there and it’s worth every penny. I usually spend tons of time planning and mapping out road trips, but the Shaka app now does it all for me. Seriously, you could plan your entire Hawaii itinerary around this app! Not only does it point out great scenic stops and tourist spots; it suggests hikes and some local food spots along the way, too. We found SO many hidden gems that we would have likely missed on our own. I also love the local history insights—it helps instill a greater appreciation for the beautiful land and culture of Hawaii. Mahalo nui loa to the creators of this app!

Don’t do Road to Hana without this app!
This app was a fantastic guide along our road to Hana trip. Since there’s no cell service for most the the trip, it was great to have a guide pointing things out along the way that a first timer may miss even with lots of prep and research. Loved how it kept us safe and legal - telling us where and when it was ok to stop for attractions and when we needed to just drive by. Also appreciated the heads up on bathroom stops and which attractions are paid vs. free. Having a local guide who knows the area show us some lesser known stops was worth every penny - these were actually some of our favorite experiences! The Hawaiian history on the drive back was entertaining and we thoroughly enjoyed our trip. I highly recommend this guide and wish we would have downloaded some of the other Maui guides earlier in our trip!

Warning on Road to Hana your
Shaka app should highly recommend users do not do full loop on Road to Hana unless they have off road vehicle and experienced driver. After Hana the road stops being a road and is barely one lane wide let alone two lanes for oncoming traffic. Very dangerous. The tour guide on the app should stop people from driving full loop and have them turn around. The guide simple says road gets more difficult and says road narrows to one and half lanes. It is way worse than that and really not appropriate for tourists. Only locals should be on that road.

Best tour guide! Super useful
This app was our travel companion during our Haleakala and Road to Hana trips and was great in providing directions and guiding us to see everything we wanted to see. Worth shelling out the $30 to get both guides. Not as useful for West Maui as it couldn’t tell as much when we were going in the opposite direction. Sometimes, when we kept the app open in the background and then tried to take a video it would stop and then continue in the background even though I had paused it, so that would be one bug to fix.

Wish I had this for every travel location!
Absolutely amazing concept and execution! My husband and I rented a convertible for a day and used the Shaka Guide to do a clockwise tour from Waikiki to North Shore and back. I loved that the tour knew our location and gave turn by turn directions while also giving stories/info and providing relaxing local music.
It really made the entire experience enjoyable for everyone and took away all the stress. Absolutely recommended for anyone visiting any location they have a tour for!
