  • Nice theme, easy learning sentences are very short

I’ve been paying for this for a few weeks now and have truly enjoyed the app and the useful vocabulary I am getting. As a learner of 10 years this app is super useful to keep my reading an vocabulary maintained. I do wish some if the sentences were longer in parts making use of conjunctions. However overall it is doing well. I do agree with the above comments about the price as it is above and beyond other services. The materials are good, but lateral.

  • App doesn’t open - UPDATE

I got the app as soon as it was launched, I loved it and subscribed. It worked perfectly fine at the beginning but now it doesn’t open. It’s stuck at a screen with the apps logo. Even after the update it still doesn’t work.

UPDATE: After uninstalling and installing the app again, the issue has been successfully resolved.

  • Love the app, needs some work

I’m usually not one to be consistent with language apps OR leave app reviews, but there’s a first time for everything. I think this is a solid app with great potential.

    Pro:
    -Great/entertaining stories!
    -Cool vocabulary word feature
-UI for audio capabilities are great

    Needs work on:
    -The app loads pretty slow
-The stories need a consistent internet connection. This is an app that would be GREAT during the commute to work or home. But as soon as you lose your internet connection, stories stop loading and quizzes tend to crash. Any way to cache data to prevent cutting off the user experience?
-The words that are not bolded or marked as vocabulary words have no way for translation. I have to manually type it into a translator. I wish I could highlight any word to translate or at least copy it so I can paste it into a translator myself.

Overall I really like this app and I see myself using it every day during my commutes or bored while running errands. Thanks for a fun learning experience!

  • Error in Grading Responses

Occasionally, the correct answers are marked as wrong. For example:

In Level 5, story 3 (grandma, my grandma).. there is the following quiz item: “I use the small room as a bedroom.” The statement is correct. However, that answer is graded as incorrect. This is the second or third instance of a bug in the grading of responses.. frustrating.

  • Best TTMIK resource !

I really enjoy this app and the content! I’ve been searching for a reading resource that was level appropriate (most Korean language resources are too easy and boring and most Korean literature is too difficult) and this app hit the spot! Perfect bite size passages that keep me interested. The level test was spot on as well! I was put into the perfect level for me (levers 3) so I’m never bored and I’m also challenged but not overwhelmed.

I really like the content and layout. Two things that would make the user experience better for me would be
    1. Click on grammar endings for a quick refresher
    2. More word definitions.

Having these at least as an option to use would be really helpful that way I don’t have to keep exiting out of the app to check my dictionary or grammar notes.

Over all I really enjoy this app! Great work, TTMIK Team!

  • Good But Not Worth The Cost

I was keen for this app but after doing the free trial, I was quite disappointed at the content compared to the monthly cost. Some issues I had:

    - The app lets you select some words that you might not understand for the definition, but only particular words. There were words that I didn't understand but was not able to click on, so I ended up having to use it alongside a translation app.

    - It's not very engaging. You read, you do a quiz, and you can use the flashcards. This app doesn't seem to cater to different learning styles, I wish there were pictures with facial expressions/ items/ people mentioned in the story or some more interactive content for visual learners like myself. Though it does have an option to listen to the story as well as read it which I liked.

    - I may have missed it, but I couldn't see anywhere to read the story in English after finishing it in Korean and doing the quiz? I'd love to know if I translated the story correctly but you can't copy text (which I understand why) to put it in a translation app.

    - I don't feel the monthly cost is justified. I understand it works out to be a couple of dollars a day, but as someone who doesn't buy 'daily coffees' etc. that adds up. I wish there was a discount for those who already subscribe to their website.

  • I love TTMIK

UPDATE! Thank you for the help! I just found the article stack with your guidance. I’m a beginner - just about to start TTMIK level 3 - and I find the articles quite a bit easier for me at this point.

TTMIK is awesome for learning Korean. I like this app because they are working on new methods to help us improve. I like the highlighted words that can be added to a list. The stories and articles are short allowing me to complete one when I don’t have the time for a complete TTMIK lesson. I love that the speed of the reader can be changed. Even if I don’t know all of the words - I can improve my reading and speaking speed. I don’t mind the price - it’s easily worth more than the cost per day. I would like the ability to go back to previous articles - I can only go back to previous stories. A translation would be great. I would also like the ability to print the articles and stories (double spaced!) so that I can write things out as I translate - although writing them out by hand as I do now is good practice :) The vocabulary test could be more difficult - it’s too easy right now. For example - the “to do” words need both choices to have “to do” endings. The vocab test is fun - it would be nice to have the ability to keep it going longer. Three times is a bit early to learn a word.

  • Great material, but app serious needs improvement

As someone who’s been searching for high quality graded reading material for a long time, this was a exciting addition to TTMIK’s extensive catalog of resources. While the series/articles themselves are much more interesting than the other graded readers I’ve tried in the past, the app/service is not as polished as I would’ve expected from TTMIK.

Right off the bat, when I took the placement quiz, I expected it to go like how the one does on the Courses website does– starting at a very low level and gradually getting more advanced– but I just answered a handful of beginner questions and then was placed as Level 1, despite actually being on Level 8 of TTMIK’s Core Curriculum. Granted, you can fairly easily switch between levels, but this really didn’t give me a good first impression of the app.

I have noticed that there are a number of simple mistakes, though. I don’t often listen through the whole story audio (opting to read the stories aloud myself for some extra speaking practice) but there was a sentence that was straight up missing a word in the text and I had to listen to the audio to hear it. It’s even worse with the flashcards; Some of the audios are completely mismatched with the word their supposed to say, and I’ve come across a number of spelling mistakes in the English translation options. Also, the buttons to hear audio on both the stories and flashcards are way too small and I have to try to tap them multiple times just to get them to play.

Speaking of the flashcards, I am incredibly, incredibly disappointed with this feature. Even if I can’t recall the Korean word, I can simply look at the two options I’m given and be practically told the right answer; If the word is clearly a verb, which of the two options am I going to pick? The verb or the noun? It’s such a cop out way to do flashcards. You can’t even browse your flashcard deck, remove any accidentally added words, or undo any choices. This feature honestly either needs an absolute overhaul or to be removed all together. If I were developing this feature, the first thing I’d do is remove the simple multiple choice feature in favor of two versions of each card: one version showing the meaning in English (or whatever your native language) a ‘write-in’ feature where you type the word in Korean yourself, and another version where you’re shown an example sentence in Korean with the target word highlighted and more than 2 multiple choices that aren’t completely random, that are chosen to pair with the target word based on similarity to make it more challenging for the learner.

For me, in the USA, the monthly subscription of this app costs about $20, which is slightly more than a monthly subscription of TTMIK courses. In my opinion, this app needs a lot of upgrades in order to justify that price tag. I’m really rooting for the development team working on this, because this app has great potential. 화이팅!

  • Compelling

I am giving this a try. My perspective: Self-taught for a few months and some work with a tutor. So, I'm a beginner. And I'm at Level 1 in the app. I've tried a few articles and started a 'Story'. It's not cheap so I'll have to see how much I can get out of it in deciding to continue the subscription.

I think the concept is powerful. It's probably a tough thing to balance between making it too easy vs. helping the learner grow. That said, I do find myself lost even in this early stage. So I don't necessarily see this as a standalone learning tool, at least for a beginner like me. (See my feedback)

    Quick feedback:
    1) In addition to the vocab being highlighted, it would be useful to have key particles highlighted. Or just other little grammar tidbits. Sometimes that's just enough to help me figure out context and then I can 'unlock' other meanings or sentence flow.

    2) I've realized that language learning is in a way multiple disciplines rolled into one. Pronunciation and reading are two strengths that can be worked on independently, to a degree (my opinion). So to get more use out of this product, I think it would be amazing to have a mode that creates pauses after the narrator says each line. So I can drive or go for a walk, listen and then repeat the narrator after each line. This would not require looking at the screen and I feel would really help with pronunciation practice. Sort of like overhearing someone talking on the bus. Then of course later when reviewing the text on the screen there would be added familiarity if I've been repeating the lines while driving, for example.

    Thanks
