A must for Japanese learners

I’ve been using this app since I started learning Japanese nearly 5 years ago. I can’t fault it. It gives multiple suggestions for the word you want to find and tells you all the information you’d ever want to know about every individual kanji - stroke order and count, JLPT level, kun and onyomi; the works. A great study aid and an even more trusty companion during my 2 years in Japan.

Fantastic app

This is a really fantastic app. I use it every day as I improve my Japanese reading ability, and in particular, I use it on my iPad to quickly lookup words. I love the auto read feature from my clipboard, as it saves having to type in or manually paste what I want to look up.

It seems clear that this app isn't going to be continued to be maintained, as it was last updated two years ago, however if there is any possibility, one feature request which would make my life so much easier would be for the app to have support for keyboard shortcuts. In particular, CMD + F to open up the search box would be absolutely ace!

Ok but...

When I go into setting it refuses to let me turn off other languages. They do this by putting out of the reach of the screen. Please fix this.

Also it’s not very good for learning Japanese so much as it is for searching for Japanese words.

But still ok.

No calligraphic search

How do you make a Japanese dictionary app and not include calligraphic search capability? I have 2 other apps that both allow you to draw kanji to search, which is often times much quicker and easier than searching with SKIP/radicals. I looked for this feature for 10 minutes and I guess it doesn’t have it. I’ve heard this is a great app, but I would love to see this feature added and I would consider trying this app.

One thing♥

I love it and it helps me a bit but theres a small problem. I don't speak Japanese and i want to, but there's no pronounciation for the words. I can't see any pronounciation. I think you can add the pronounciation in the dictionary and stuff. But fortunately i have the Hiragana japanese thing but UNFORTUNATLEY i'm not really used to it and i cant be bothered looking through it the whole time. So i hope you can add some pronounciation!!

I love it

I use this app so much. The layout is fantastic, I love that you can use it offline, and the way it shows you the stroke order for kanji is incredibly useful. I definitely recommend this app to anyone learning Japanese.

super cool!

i used imiwa during an exchange trip in japan and it was very helpful! i was able to build my vocabulary from listening to people speaking and looking up the words. the only issue is that some words i used and found on the app were not very standard for the kansai dialect and left people i was speaking with confused, or was told that i was talking like a super old person lol

overall, awesome app!

いつまでも、ありがとう

Love this app since I first got it and it's a major reason I stay on ios. Out of the box, no connection needed, translates Japanese-English (or a few others), one box, in a clean design, plus easy kanji search methods. 6 stars.

Fast and good, but wish multi was better

Wish the way multi-pronunciation was handled better; ie separate entries for different readings and spellings

Pleco handles that aspect better

The #1 Best Translation App

Ive tried a lot of the translation apps, and none can touch this app. It provides an incredible amount of extremely useful information about each word. I like it for the following reasons:
(1) has very accurate, nuanced and detailed definitions in multiple languages
(2) provides info about what each kanji means (both as the whole word and broken down into individual kanji elements)
(3) provides the grammatical structure of the word (e.g. it is an intransitive verb, い or な adjective, etc.)
(4) provides all of the forms/conjugations of verbs and adjectives (e.g. present tense, past tense, ongoing, etc.).
(5) provides kanji, hiragana, and romanji
(6) has easy-to-access links to similar and related words
(7) enter full sentences and it will break down each piece of vocab in the sentence
(8) lets you know if the kana or kanji is more commonly used
(9) has language cards you can practice that are organized according to both JLPT and school grade levels of difficulty
(10) can bookmark and write notes
(11) very nice “copy and paste” function
(12) lots of kanji info: kanji brush strokes, info about radicals, lists other words using the same kanji radicals, etc.
There are other apps with similar features (e.g. “Shitabe Jisho” and “Japanese”) but Imiwa is much cleaner and easy to read.
