The best metronome app out there

And believe me when I say that... I've tried them all! I'd say this is the best out there for musicians that really are serious and want to customize and control their metronome/drum machine in every way possible right from their Apple Products! However, If you're just learning and looking for something more simplistic go for MetroTimer. I recommend that one to my students who are starting out. It's far less involved, and gives you a good straight forward metronome with a few easy-to-understand options.

Absolutely The Best!

Okay, I know this app seems expensive at around $10... Trust me, it's worth every penny and more! It's the only app I have found that emulates the boss db-90, but much better. The developer is quick to respond to emails as well. The only wish I have for the app is a slightly larger start/stop button and compatibility with the Airturn Bluetooth pedals. Regardless, this is a must have! I play drums for one of the largest churches in the US, as well as being a session drummer with many bands in the Houston area and I use a click a lot. Trust me I've tried them all and this is the one!!!

The best.

Iโ€™ve been using Dr. Betotte since the iPhone and iPad were but twinkles in Steve Jobs's eyes (It was originally a shareware desktop app). Itโ€™s always been my favorite as I require a loud percussive metronome sound, which few apps have been able to achieve. Whatโ€™s more, is this app offers the specific Dr. Beat sounds of my favorite devices - especially my beloved DB-66. I highly recommend this app. Itโ€™s well worth the price, considering actual metronomes go for about 10 times that. Enjoy!

Almost perfect

This is, by far, the best metronome app I've ever seen or used. You can do a lot with it, and I find it particularly useful for those who want to practice odd meters or specific grouping of beats within a measure (like a 7/8 played as 2+2+3, or 2+3+2 etc). It is really the only app that can do that, an it's pretty awesome at it.
The only drawback I found is that it needs a separate, specific click for the first beat in a measure. It's easy to get lost while playing a complicated 7/8 like that when all the clicks sound the same, and a big "one" click would make it a lot easier.
I truly hope they add this in an update - then this would be the perfect metronome.

ICSOMplayer

Those saying it doesn't keep time must not realize it has functions that change the tempo incrementally... which I find to be a hugely useful practice aid! Those claiming for a $10 app it isn't updated enough need to get their heads out of their iPads... It does MORE than traditional metronomes costing 10-15x as much!!! My DB88 was dying and I had just bought an iPhone so this was a more than perfect replacement! ONLY $10, fits in my pocket, I always have it with me, and does a drone AND beat at the same time(something I always wished a dr beat would do!) if you already have an iPhone and need a metronome for any level of music making the value simply can't be beat!!!

Have used this for years for lessons and performingโ€ฆ

This is nearly a dead ringer for my Boss Dr. Beat DB-88 with the addition that the app can store scenes.

It's been easy to use and great while teaching guitar lessons and needing to have a tempo handy during a live performance that I can 'see' without hearing it. I can mute it and just put it in a mode where it flashes.

Someone complained about the lack of updates, but it's worked fine - and hasn't needed any updates in my mind. I even use it on my iPad2.

It works in the background (a good thing) - so you do need to remember to stop it!

Descent, needs update

Lots of great features in this app. I did notice that it is not exactly correct on the tempo when compared to my DB 90. At around 120 it seems rock solid, but as the tempo gets further away from that center point it is further out of time. Very frustrating to have to Set this met to 183 to get e tempo of around 180. Update please!!!

Does not keep time

Although this metronome has some really great features, it fails at its most basic level...it can't keep time. I've compared it to both my Dr. Beat DB-90 and a stop watch and it slows down EVERY time (although sometimes it happens faster than others.)
If keeping exact time isn't important to you it's got some cool features, like swing time and can automatically increase the tempo.

2 stars for features
0 stars for tempo inaccuracy. The point of a metronome is to keep a steady beat. If it can't, IMVHO, it's worthless.

Great app... but...

I'm a music teacher of 35 years and still have my original Dr Beat from the 1970's. Always loved it, but now that I have an iPhone, why not run it as an app? So I got this and it's GREAT! Some others said it doesn't stay steady, but I've used it now for a week in and out of lessons and there is really no problem with the beat on my iPhone4. Rock solid steady. Great job there. And the feature set is even better than my original Dr Beat. Great job again!

There are two problems that need addressing, and when they are done, I'll move my rating up one point for each. First, you need to jack up the volume. I have one other metronome app I've used in the past (not as many features as yours) that is very easy to hear, especially with the new iPhone4 speaker volume level. I've used yours in lessons now, but found I needed to plug my phone into an amp to get it usable with a wind instrument (I teach clarinet and sax). I don't see any reason why we can't set this up for a bit more volume. Second, sometimes when you initially launch the app, it resets to all sounds on full. Kind of chaotic. It would be great it if better remembers the last setting and picked up from there more reliably.

If you can adjust those two things, I'd definitely move my rating up to 5 stars and say it fully justifies the price premium for a great Dr Beat replacement.

What a waste of $10 (update: v. 3 much improved)

UPDATE for v. 3:

Big improvement to the user interface, thanks. I especially appreciate the landscape view with the pendulum and far less screen clutter. And the drum set's kick sample sounds enough like a UREI (over my iPad's internal speaker) to make me happy.

Revising my rating upwards to four stars.

----------------------

This may be the right tool for band directors and percussion instructors, but what a horribly cluttered interface! It's software, guy. Hide the lesser-used functions behind a swipe, and make the more commonly used buttons larger. And while you're at it, the TV and film industry uses a UREI click. Think you could find room for a simple pulse wave sample amongst all the drum machine beeps and boops?

If all you need is a simple, rock-solid tempo reference for stage or studio, save $8 and get Visual Metronome instead. Also useful and nicely designed is Metronome TS. I own all three programs as well as the Dr. Beat on which this was based, and am very sorry I wasted my money on Dr. Betotte.

By the way, note the developer's liberal return policy: "you cannot cancel a purchase or receive a refund for a purchase under any reason." Nice.
