Excellent access to Japanese culture & News
I've visited Japan twice and always come home wanting more. Recently discovered the NHK World app for my iPad and for my AppleTV.
From news shows (without any kind of typical western slant) you can keep up on newsworthy events from Japan, Asia, the USA and the rest of the world. Some of the news anchors/reporters don't have the typical western polish, but honestly, I find that very refreshing.
They have many shows designed to inform you about Japanese culture with a heavy emphasis on travel. The iPad app also has access to basic Japanese language learning and lots of fun shows that will introduce you to Japanese culture.Show lessBlue h2o
Better video player
I would like the video player to be better, the current one takes a long time for the pause screen to disappear, it should hide/show with a tap. I can't seem to add a notification of when a specific program will air any more, please fix. Also, an option to choose the video quality would be good too. ありがとう！😊Show lessJmember12

A little buggy
I have an iPhone 4S with iOS6.
The major issue I'm currently experiencing is when the video skips about one minute back or ahead. Sometimes in a 30 minute period this happens about a dozen times. It sometimes makes the shows unwatchable because you keep losing your place.
Also sometimes the video periodically has trouble starting. Not as bad as the first issue though.
It is to the point where I just go to the website to watch since there are no problems there.
That all said, the programming and shows are very enjoyable. I'd recommend it mainly because of that. I just hope they address the issues.Show lessOkina

If you watch NHK online on a PC it's the same service (most progs you can watch, some are blocked). There's a handy schedule that clearly shows what you can view and what you can't.

This app needs Air Play ASAP
Excellent coverage of the unfolding tragedy in Japan. However, the sharing of information would be greatly improved if this app were tweaked to permit the streaming to TV via Air Play made possible by iOS 4.3. Interested family members could then watch the newscasts with me on the larger screen. At the moment only the audio is streamed. Please add video streaming.
