  • Yet another great electronic music app

As an electronic musician exploring non-traditional approaches to music creation, its important to break away from the traditional music keyboard as an interface. The iPad, and to a lesser extent, the iPhone excel in this area, because all you have to work with is what is on the screen. Reactable is based on a VERY expensive and difficult to get hardware instrument, and what you see on the screen is exactly how the real thing looks - but this costs $12.99, not $9000, and is just as usable. You create free-form music with a variety of objects placed on a table. Each object performs a unique function, but interacts with other objects - sound sources, filters, delays, sequencers, etc. The creative possibilities are amazing, especially if you have some understanding of the principles of electronic music. The creators are updating the app, adding new functions, and making it all the more useable. Like the Moog Filtatron, you need a set of headphones or an audio out to a mixer to hear sound, but this is an instrument that really will work well, especially in software based studios. It would be nice to see a VST or Audio Units version that could be integrated directly into a Digital Audio Workstation like Abelton Live, but this is a good start.

I highly recommend it, and its worth taking a bit of time to learn about what each of the objects do. So the user manual is worth reading. Persist with it, and you will find it a rewarding experience.

  • Cantenna

    Thank you for the update.
  • Still really awesome

I was so excited when I heard about this app coming to the iPhone. And it really does recreate the awesomeness of the real thing, but, I'm using a 3GS and I do get low memory warning when I put a bunch of stuff on the table. Probably needs the 4 or iPad to run A+. Still though, really awesome.
  • The best audio app on the iPad yet

This is the best music based iPad app yet.

I saw Björk play with the Retractable unit live and was blown away, but to have access tom it on my iPad is amazing.

    Thankyou for this app.
  • Store sound files in folders

This app has some awesome potential. I would love to see the option to upload folders of sound files to my iPhone for example a separate folder for drum loops and another for synth loops. Keep up the good work this is by far the best music app I have played with.
  • Pretty amazing

I too had a 3G and could barely get it to work. But I recently upgraded to 4 and my oh my. It runs like a champ, though it still sputters when there's alot going on. But really this thing is crazy, u can get some out if this world sounds out of it. Such potential, soon well all be cutting commercial releases straight from our phones with apps like this and nano studio.

  • Great experimental music app.

Even on my little iPhone screen, it's a blast to experiment with. The addition of recording to disk from the latest update lets me drop it into my workflow.
  • Awesome app

Would be great to have more objects like those used by Bjork i.e. Radar object
  • Huge potential

As a new app this certainly has massive amounts of potential - it's very intuitive to play, the variety of inbuilt sounds is good for the beginner, and the way effects can be added and modified is very innovative (I particularly love the interface on the filter).
If you could add external 'vga' or 'camera kit usb' support it would make it a great live performance tool (for DJs & VJs alike), as well as some further development of the sampler (again, if you could add external support via the camera connection kit for USB interfaces it would be very handy).
A winner and worth the money!
