  • Slick, but Really Limited

Reactable has a really nice looking interface, and does introduce some pretty fun ways to directly interact with the playback of loops. That being said, the app is pretty limited in what it can do. I was expecting something more on par with Jasuto, or with the generative qualities of Aura Flux, or at least the ability to do some more complex manipulation of sound. Reactable offers a slick way to fiddle with the standard fare of filter sweeps, eq, etc, but doesn't go farther. Also, if you are looking for a compositional or sound design tool, look elsewhere. Reactable only sounds good when it's playing back loops you've created in other apps. It's ability to generate original interesting tones is very minimal. But if you are looking for a fun, touchy-feely way to play back some loops, Reactable could be the app for you.

  • Awesome!

A brilliant transposition of the real thing. The record function is awesome! I have been making some massive sounding pieces already! I want to know how to export the tracks I record to my computer though! :) I also wish there was a 'resort to original state' button for the loaded tables. Please?!
  • Not for me

I wanted to love the Reactable. I love playing/creating music, but clearly, after over two months trying, this app does not suit my way of doing music. Maybe is I was more of a dj and less an improviser, I would have liked it more.

The interface isn't as easy to master as it looks like or as it should. A tutorial would be more than welcomed.

In the end, I feel my hands are tied by the inputs, instead of being inspired by them. Well, if you like this app, good for you (really)! As for me, I'm going back to Thumbjam and will keep looking for other music apps that might suit my "type".

  • its ok but not really amazing.

when i first saw reactable and music cubes being used a few years back now i was completely stunned and blown aways.
the tactile interface and interacting between musical and visual elements was such a amazing concept.
it was kind of like taking the idea of a patch cord synth and turning it up a notch ....
    or was it.
reactable really is a sample play back system with maybe a bit of analog modeling thrown in for good measure. not too sure about what kind of synthesis is employed with the oscillators .
Any how i get how cool this is to watch in a live in performance. And it does look amazing.
This app is only ten bucks. You know there is a but coming right! lol.
Well i found this to be really kind of cumbersome to get used to. Yup its fairly intuitive but honestly I found the korg ipad apps to be way more fun and musical. They also sound much much better. Reactable looks amazing projected on a wall behind me its quite neat to watch. The thing is tho its kind of like back in the day when your favorite arcade game would show up on the n64 or sega.
It was close to the arcade game but somehow it fell short of providing the full effect of the real thing.
Still a great little program but not the first app i run when looking for some musical inspiration for the ipad.
i did not completely regret the ten bucks spent its only ten bucks. I mean ten years ago if someone told me i could get something like this for ten bucks i would have thought that i must be talking to someone who was high on crack.

  • Super fun!

It's SUPER FUN. I can now relive the real thing! Absolutely worth the $10.
  • Interesting but complex

I have no background in any of this stuff, but the interface and idea of electronic music and beat production interested me. The price and apparent complexity kept me away but I gave it a shot, and am glad I did. Would be nice if it were easier to import new wav. Still have no idea how to do most things but it's fun to play with. So many options. What i really like is how you can setup a table, and record a sequence, and then use that sequence as a building block in a new table, so you can keep building and building. You won't see me at the next rave mixing beats and waving glowsticks, but It's a lot of fun to do on the couch :)

  • Nice!

The sound that comes out of this thing is clean. Just getting into it...but, I'm all ready figuring it out pretty easily. It helps to know a little about synthesis and routing though. The interface is nicely layed out and organized. The instruments, controllers, and effects are quite capable of making a lot of basic and unusual sounds- hope they add a few on the next version though. The graphics are smooth. All in all- a great version 1 for this software.

  • To the Software Engineers

I have been waiting for this for ages seen as the real thing is about £20,000.

Advise not to buy for the 32GB iphone 3GS or less as phone is not powerful enough to run with out freeze ups, slowing down, all items being removed do to slow system, not being able to save due to errors. A lot of work still needs to be done on this and for £5.99 it's a bit cheeky. Perhaps system test and validate before releasing update ; )

Other than that it would be a bloody brilliant app.

  • How much fun is this!

Awesome interface and work has gone in this app!
  • Modular synthesis for people who don't know what that is

Reactable is a great concept. The original design has a great "wow" factor to it. So does iPad. Ergo the natural thing to think is "wow Reactable on the iPad- they are meant for each other!" - right? Wrong.

That's what I originally thought, and bought this the second it was in the app store, but must say I am thoroughly disappointed. The original concept is based around moving physical blocks to change a sound, and this is a software version of that. But where this falls short is exactly where any sw falls short when it tries to take something meant for physical contact and shove it on a touchscreen. It just doesn't work that great.

Their gestures are not intuitive (or that responsive) and the sound design aspects are VERY limited. This is modular synthesis for people who don't know what to expect from a modular synth. Why can't you plug the output of an oscillator into the frequency input of a 2nd oscillator? From a UI standpoint, this is not even clear. There is no indication what inputs are exposed and what outputs can go into them. And for a quote "modular synth" that fact is a pretty big deal breaker for me.

The Korg iMS-20 is way more useful, musically speaking.
