  • It's not a game.

    But it's so interesting~ Good App~

I remember seeing this app previewed in development and thinking, well there's a good reason to have an iPad. And now that it's published, it's a beautiful thing. Sure there are a few usability quibbles, but this is an app that demands your creativity and draws it out, rather than making you look better than you really are! Excellent work, and I can see hours of delicate work ahead of me.

  • Brilliant...just brilliant

As a type geek, I got a thrill exploring this lovely program. It's the same romantic thrill I got seeing the actual handpress used by Leonard and Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press, now on exhibit at Sissinghurst Castle, to publish many of the Bloomsbury Group of artists and authors. Leonard Woolf wrote:

“Nearly all the implements of printing are materially attractive, and we stared through the window at them rather like two hungry children gazing at buns and cakes in a baker shop window.”

The charm of LetterMpress is that it captures the beauty of the type itself and of printing and translates a bit of the magic of typesetting by hand into the digital realm, skillfully using the iPads interface to illustrate the process that was printing for hundreds of years.

  • Needs more

The concept is good, however for the developers to say it is not a toy is a huge leap. To say it is not fun would be better wording. Moving and finding anything is very awkward. The font and design choices are extremely limited. At this point this app is definitely not worth the price. Has great potential, but for now it is lacking in options and maneuvering is difficult at best.

  • Lots of potential.. could be intimidating for beginners

Very nice app. Like the other posters said, moving objects and resizing is a bit awkward and hopefully they correct it in an update. Also, I think this application needs a better tutorial. Thank god I have some letterpress experience cause some of this stuff could be really intimidating to a beginner.

  • Just perfect

As a professional art director of a certain age I'm almost ashamed to admit to remembering, and using, original letterpress machines. This is a stunning piece of software. They've captured the physicality of wood type and the tactile qualities of it. It looks amazing and feels right. It's been many years since I've had to think all upside down and back to front but after a few minutes it becomes second nature. This is a proper tool.

This is one of those apps that are worth the price of the Ipad.

All that's missing is the smell of the ink.

  • Gorgeous app, but...

I wouldn't mind paying the $5.99 if I could actually do anything with it other than admire its striking good looks. The app isn't exactly intuitive, there should be some sort of tutorial to using on the iPad; moving the type and art is awkward and cumbersome, scaling and turning next to impossible, and the "toolbar" is fixed in place and in the way. Altogether a frustrating exercise in futility and waste of money.

  • Wow

Working with this press really takes me back to HS Graphic Arts class; the only thing missing is the smell of ink — and the class bully who would run people's TrapperKeepers through the press.

This app really is as in-depth as it looks. Every detail has been thought out and the result is really authentic. Like a real press, you have to plan things out; there's no modern page layout functionality — on purpose, of course.

Unless you've operated a real letter press, you may not be familiar with the workflow, but it's interactive enough to encourage playing around, and no one's fingers are going to get pinched.

Finally, there are some nice conveniences such as loading and saving of your galleys, and you don't have lock up your type before printing it.

Thanks for making this app, I can tell that a lot of love went into it!

  • Can't save results

Neat app which might have some potential if you could save the result of your work to your Photo Album. But, try as I might, this just doesn't work. I've adjusted the resolution within the app and deleted a truckfull of photos, but I can't save my work. Frustating.
  • Great app but....

I love this app but I've been thinking that maybe it should have a tutorial to explain the usage of the lockups a bit better. Also the sizing of the blocks are really hit or miss. Overall it's very useful but I'm hoping there'll be an "undo" function in a future version as well as a better way to manipulate the furniture and dingbats! Great job though! I'm hooked!
