  • Updates feel backwards

They updated this and while some things are better, like the photo upload process and the transparency with gas charges (thank you for showing how much we’ll pay at the end if we don’t refill, and setting a standard vs letting the owner charge us like 70 bucks for 5% less gas than at the start - this is much improved!!) they took away the unlock feature, which was hugely convenient in the old app, especially for older cars without fobs. Also why would they not show the exact location anymore? I rented a car show me where it is, don’t make me go on a scavenger hunt. It’s still not super intuitive with the flow, and the location of the keys should be more prominently displayed.

  • Terms & Conditions meaningless

Despite numerous emails, I can no longer use the app because the company says I owe $150 in late fees. Except they acknowledge the car was brought in less than 2.5 hours late, so at most I could owe is $100. Then the reason the vehicle was late was because I had a tire blowout. Getaround’s roadside assistance was called and I was waiting on them but it was literally impossible for me to return the vehicle on time.

I also believe I’m eligible for a refund of the 2.5 hours during which I was unable to use the truck.

Finally, when I reported all this to getaround, the person that contacted me back chastised me for not returning the car on time and didn’t even mention the blowout, like she hadn’t even taken the time to review what I said.

  • This company is getting shady.

I want to share my experience with Getaround Rent-A-Car. Initially, they had extremely high booking fees, sometimes as much as 50% of the total rental cost, with no alternative booking options. While they have since removed these exorbitant booking fees, other issues persist.

One major concern is their rental insurance fees. I understand that car rentals are more expensive on weekends, but adding a 60% insurance increase on top of that is ridiculous. Additionally, there's a $50 deposit, which I have never seen refunded.

In contrast, I recently rented a car from Hertz, located in the same parking garage as Getaround, for a weekend (Thursday to Tuesday). The cost was comparable to a six-hour rental on a Saturday with Getaround, but the insurance was only $12 a day, and the deposit was returned within three business days.

Considering the high costs and unreliable service with Getaround, it’s becoming increasingly frustrating. Not only are you not guaranteed a clean or well-maintained car, but there's also no assurance that a replacement will be available if needed. Nowadays, I only use Getaround if I need a car by the hour for an emergency or last-minute situation.

This review is not intended to bash Getaround, but to highlight the changes and ongoing issues with their service. Getaround needs to address these concerns if they want to retain customers.

  • Convenient, a bit expensive but a trap

I just deleted my account after 2 rentals and one weird experience with customer service. Did you know that the app let you book a car for 2hrs, but for a slot that already started? like you select 12pm till 2pm and before accepting you go get your stuff ready, when you finalize your booking it’s 12:20. The app actually lets you book, but with a start time 12 and expected return 2pm !! Yep if you think like me that what counts is the pick up time , it’s not ! So I returned the car 30mins later and I got fined $50 for late return + another hour of rental.
And she you discuss with the customer service they basically say that you should read the rules and FAQ ! You book and pay for 2 hrs but you should only ride 1:40mins, yep that is the rule! Too bad you didn’t know.
Apart from that the app and rental is very convenient, the price is expensive and never what is advertised! Like all my rentals were advertised $2/hr $32/day and I paid for 2hrs $60 my first rental and $42 my second (+$66 late fees) … that’s what I call a trap !
    I will try another app.

  • Risky and Frustrating

Getaround is nice because it’s easy to use and has a low young driver fee. With this type of service, there is always the risk of someone filing a claim against you, based on previous damage that you didn’t cause, to make a profit. Additionally, if/when that claim is filed, Getaround unfortunately does not communicate with you (except saying that a claim was filed). Then, after a few months, you’re charged $100 for their efforts to manage the claim, and you’re also charged for the damage, without any explanation of what the damage was. When emailed to get further information, Getaround claims management didn’t respond. It can be frustrating that there’s no communication through this process and that there are spontaneous/unexpected charges.

  • They rented me a car that wasn’t there

The last vehicle I rented I took an Uber which cost me about 40$ to get there I was dropped off at the correct location only to find there was no car. I called the lady apologized and told me the car hadn’t been returned by the previous customer and they didn’t even have another one that was close by so out of my pocket cake another 40$ to go back home. They said they would reimburse me however they never did. This is not the first time they screwed me over shame on me for not learning from the first mishap. Do yourself a favor and use any other car rental place besides this app. Good luck on getting a hold of anyone to speak to if something has gone wrong and you don’t have an active rental you can’t anyone.

  • You’ll eventually get screwed. Avoid if possible.

Ive tried to use this company several times because the idea behind it is interesting and could be helpful but,
Most of the Cars that are beat up.
Many times their not back from the previous renter, so you have no car. They say,”take an Uber” to this other car thats 15 minutes away. I dont have time to wait.
Cars are rarely fully clean. Sometimes smelly.
You have to take EXTENSIVE PHOTOS and videos on top of what they ask for as car owners can claim damage. Ive had this happen twice and luckily had pre and post photos to prove it.
HERES THE SCARY ONE. They treat your bank account like its theirs. They take money out of your bank account without your permission if you have a dispute. I brought back a car early. Their app malfunctioned so I couldn’t end the trip. They were closed. I kept calling them and the slimy owner. No help. So, they KEPT CHARGING ME and pulling money out of my account. I had proof that the car was returned. And on top they charged me another $50 penalty. I sent in my evidence and no response. Then, I saw a $50 refund in my account. Still not reimbused for the extra hourly charges. BUT THEN THEY REVERSED THE REFUND! That is illegal. Im contacting the state, my bank and pursuing legal action. To recap, bad cars, smelly cars, missing cars, no support and draining your account with no warning or communication. Good luck with that.

  • Great idea but needs more quality control

I’ve used and continue to use Getaround as it’s a great idea. You can hire cars that are just a few streets away, the rental period is flexible, you can filter vehicles via your preferences, the app is very straightforward and the pricing is reasonable. However, there is no real quality control in place or routine cleaning of vehicles between rentals (even when there have been days since a car was last rented out so it’s not a time issue). So you need to be prepared for cars that are grubby , broken air-conditioning and have some dents and scratches. Cars have always run well and I’ve never been concerned about safety etc or had any issues with unfair penalties or fines. It feels like a ‘friendly’ service rather than just focused on making as much money from you as possible. I continue to use them , just wish there was better quality control on the condition of the cars (nb: I think this issue only relates to cars which are purely for renting out vs someone’s personal car they share when they’re not using it themselves.)

UPDATE: Does anyone else think the Developer Response misses the point?!

Hello, Thank you for taking the time to let us know about the problems you encountered during your recent rental with Getaround. We are sorry to hear that you have concerns about the safety of the vehicle you rented through our platform. As Getaround does not own the cars listed on the platform, we require our owners to meet certain safety and quality standards to ensure that each car is safe and roadworthy before each rental. Customer safety is our number one priority, which is why we have a dedicated safety and quality team that reviews all safety reports submitted on rentals via the app: you can read more in our Help Centre article here. Once a safety report has been submitted, our teams will then carry out the necessary checks on the vehicle.
  • Bad start to new app

I’ve used Getaround for many years. I was forced to upgrade to the new app a couple months ago and this is my first time trying to use it today and it has been a huge pain!

It did not import my profile other than my first and last name and I think it got that from my Facebook login. It does not show my driving history or that I’ve been a member for many years. I had to reverify my identity and it rejected my photo ID verification twice before going through manual review while never telling me what was wrong with my photo ID submission.

When I tried to check out for my first car reservation it ending up costing over $30 for a $10 rental. Half of that is the manual photo ID verification. But it also added a sales tax and there is no sales tax in my state.

  • DON'T USE THIS APP- It posts cars for rent that aren't truly available

What a fiasco. I planned a trip to Dallas. Traditional rental car companies were all sold out due to eclipse. GetAround showed a car in Fort Worth available. I pick that one, booking is confirmed and my credit card is charged. Two days AFTER the booking, the owner messages me through the app to tell me that he is no longer the owner and car isn't available for rental. I contact GetAround, but there is no phone number for immediate help, so I have to send an e-mail, which they say they'll respond to in 48 hours. That's too late since my trip is less than 24 hours away. You would think that as part of confirmation, GetAround would confirm with the owner that the car is available on the date and time requested by the renter, but apparently not! Now I'll have to alter my plans because I will have no car. What a hassle to travelers because of shortcomings in their process and no telephone support for timely resolution. They have a lot of bugs to work out in this peer-to-peer rental process.
